Happy New Year! And happy birthday Drupal, and congratulations to everyone that worked to make the 5.0 release of Drupal awesome! We're going to be celebrating all of these in our monthly Drupal meetup on Wednesday, January 24th, at the Science Club (1136 19th Street, NW). We'll be in the basement again and will be throw a heck of a party. We'll of course tie some presentations into the fun.

We'll start at 7 pm with $3 Yuenglings and shortly after get some presenations started. The schedule is open so you have something to present or want to nominate someone else, we're all ears. As of now, we're thinking there will be lots of talk about Drupal 5.0 and stories about how upgrades are going. Come to share and absorb.

See you there!

Strangers Welcome?

djtansey's picture

I don't yet know if I'll be free that evening, but I'm an active drupal user in the D.C. metro area who would like to meet other drupal-ers. Are strangers welcome?

Under 21?

ron williams's picture

Is there any news regarding the status for attendance by individuals under 21.

Hey Ron, They are checking

ericgundersen@drupal.org's picture

Hey Ron,
They are checking in on this one. This is one of the reasons that we have the basement bar again cause it's private enterance was really great before. I don't know how that changes when it is this cold out. I am going to ping them again before the week is out and will get back to you ASAP. I hope we can meet next week!

I'm not sure what the law is

ron williams's picture

I'm not sure what the law is in DC, however a close family friend runs a bar, and the law in Maryland is that a person can be in a bar if it serves non-alcoholic food, as long as they are not sitting at the bar or served alcohol.

I was under the impression

Will White's picture

I was under the impression that it was entirely up to the bar owner. It's just that some owners don't want to deal with making sure under 21's don't get served. Restaurants, clubs, and music venues have bars, but under 21's are allowed in. Really not sure though :)

Eric: My e-mail replies are getting bounced. If you contact me with another address I can get back to you

ericgundersen@drupal.org's picture

Ok - Rob and Will - great news. You two are more than welcome. I will introduce you two to Steve - the manager when you get to the door and it will be all taken care of if you stay away from the bar. They were supper cool :). I look forward to meeting the two of you!

The line up includes:

How late?

ggrell's picture

I'm interested but I'd be coming from Fair Lakes, VA and probably wouldn't make it by 7. How late is the group there usually?

I said it's tapering off

m3avrck's picture

I said it's tapering off around 830, with everyone gone just about by 9.

Found! Module to show online/IM status of site users

laken's picture

At the DC meetup last night, during the knowledge network discussion, I mentioned a module that allows users to enter their Skype/AIM/jabber/MSN/Yahoo IM/etc handles in their user profiles, and which can then display whether a user is currently online with any of those services.

The module is called Onlinestatus Indicator and can be found here:

http://drupal.org/node/38690

No Drupal 5 branch yet, and I haven't explored to see if one is in the works, but the module looks like it is somewhat actively maintained - the last commit was 2 months ago.

I'd be interested to know if folks find some cool uses for this.

Monthly meetups?

jasonsafro's picture

Thanks to everyone who puts the meetups together. They're always a good time and I learn something each time I go.

Meetups seem to be about once a month. The place doesnt seem to change but the day of the month does. Can we make the meetups a regular monthly event? Maybe make it on the first Tuesday or Wednesday of the month?

This is a really good point.

ericgundersen@drupal.org's picture

This is a really good point. We have talked about making the meet-ups more regular, like the third Wednesday of each month... The problem is really just getting a few of the regulars on the same page to make this work. Folks have been traveling so much that doing them on a regular schedule would result in not having a lot of folks there some times. That said what started as a small tech crew drinking beers has certainly expanded and the DC drupal community has legs of its own - so if there is someone that has the bandwith to manage these (it is really easy) and wants to make sure they happen on a regular biases say so and you can start doing the coordination. My take is the more regular the better regardless if some of the old timers that started doing these can't make it.

new to dc, but in a position to be helpful

discursives's picture

Hi DC Drupalers,

I'd also like to see regular meetups 'cos i just adore talking code with my fellows.

I've also been speaking with a few people around the community to see about a DC code-a-thon, but bigger things like that will come out of our getting to know each other a bit better, i imagine.

all the same, we've done the meetups at a few different locations now, and a good location that balances location on the grid with size is really important. i like the feel of the science club, but i found the music to be too loud for me to hear last time, and honestly we were packed in pretty tight.

i know the group varies in size depending on season and date, but i think finding a consistent venue for a group of about 35 is a good goal to shoot for. we had at least that at the science club last time.

i went up to new york in may of last year for the drupal camp there...it was absolutely amazing to spend 2 days with almost 100 people of varying involvements with drupal. for an idea about what a code-a-thon, or even the future of dc meetups might look like, check out this great video by silona bonewald from the league of technical voters capturing her austin code-a-thon.

theres 3 parts, listed in the related links to the side.

this was my inspiration for coming down to sxsw where i am right now. she connected up with the arts, non-profit, and local business to bring them all together with the local open source community for this event.

I just put up a wiki page with some of my notes on planning such a thing for dc, check it out: http://groups.drupal.org/node/3093

if anyone knows of a space that even MIGHT sponsor us for our regular meetups, id be happy to chat them up. i spoke briefly with andy at buboys and poets and he is of a mind that our goals of open code and collaboration, especially when in league with local non-profits and the arts, of which he is a sponsor, that all that makes the decision to allow our use of the theatre in busboys available for a code-a- an easy choice. thats a lot of prerequisites, but its my inspiration for my perspiration.

dc rocks, and the meetups have really brought a lt of folks together. where can we meet regularly? ill schedule, ccordinate, post directions etc, but where will we be?
