Communication strategy targeting students

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi there,

I think a very nice and important target in the drupal marketing should be students.

Drupal is very attractive to students, because it can help them in many projects that they have.

Drupal is also a good opportunity to learn : webdev, marketing, communication... many students would probably find in Drupal a way to give something to the community and to learn back from it.

Also, don't forget that main companies have always big focus on relation with students. Because students are the workers of tomorrow. It is a critical issue for the success of a company on a long perspective and for Drupal as well I believe.

I read the following schema from a post in this group (by nikel) and I like to use it in order to define the communication strategy targeting students because I plan to communicate among students in France.

1) Why are we doing this campaign, what are the goals?
A global care about Drupal growth and longevity
2 main goals : Inform students about the possibility to use Drupal in their own projects
Inform students about the possibility to become involved in the drupal community

2) What message are we trying to communicate?
- a) What is the product benefit?
Drupal can help your association or your project to success.
Involvement in the drupal community can be an amazing experience for your personnal development as well as for your professional career.

  • b) Who are we trying to talk to? (Programers, Consultants, General Public...)
    Students in all fields

  • c) What does the customer want/need?

Clear and sample infomations. Examples and real testimonies.

  • d) How does Drupal meet this want/need better than the competition?

Drupal is the best one and fast growing.
The community is friendly, open minded, and really engaged in supporting social positive actions.

3) What do we want customers to think, feel and do as a result of seeing the campaign?

Think Drupal is great !!!
Feel Drupal is accessible and the community is open.

Do Download and test drupal software.
Suscribe to some groups or newsletter (to define)

4) What are the constraints eg: name, logo, budget, timing ...

Do not forget the schedule of students (holidays, exams ....)

Help fundings cand be founded with company partners and donators.

Then my next post will be about concrete communication actions in order to fulfill the communication strategy. It should be an awesome brainstorming cause there are really many things to do in this matter.

I hope you will react and discuss about the strategy first.

my approach

This is a great topic!

Just a few weeks ago I contacted a professor of computer science to get contacts within the school. He passed my information along.

Later this month I'll be presenting to a group of computer science students and also other student groups. My plan is to talk about

  • Drupal "core, contrib, community"
  • Demo of Page + Organic Groups + Calendar + Blog for a student group site
  • Hooks, Overrides, Templates - for the computer science geeks
  • Question and Answer

I will refer back to this page when writing up my presentation because you hit on lots of good points. I think one key point you mentioned is schedule - students are a fickle bunch. April they want to meet with you - June they are on vacation... ;)

Good point

I like very much the second point (demo of a student group site).

How do you introduce the conference ? Is the first point a kind of global overview ?

yes indeed

I've been thinking more about the introduction portion - some of the people in the audience may not be familiar with this, so I'll begin by asking how many people are NOT familiar with the topic and then go into depth on it based upon the response.

My plan is to cover:

What is Open Source?
What is a CMS?
What are each of LAMP?
What is Drupal?
