Hmmm. Possibilities abound.

strudeau's picture

Hmmm. Possibilities abound. Drupal is very unusual in terms of what the typical LAMP / web dev is used to seeing.

An overview of how Drupal is not OOP but it really is ... or is it?

http://api.drupal.org/api/HEAD/file/developer/topics/oop.html

Or an overview of the core API?

Or a developer centric community overview?

maybe..

jredding's picture

just an discussion covering the reasons why the community around Drupal has grown so large, so quickly?

Basic/Quick steps to building a contrib module?

Cool things in Drupal that make it nice to code to (like not having to do direct SQL queries for a lot of things).

Wow.. thats a lot

jredding's picture

thats a lot to cover but I think its doable especially if its to a crowd of geeky php developers. Most of this stuff can be quick.

So lets start asking for volunteers.

Anyone? Anyone?

I can give a talk on Drupal

platypus media's picture

I can give a talk on Drupal if need be. Let me take a look at the list of topics and I'll see what I can do. How much time do I need to talk for? That's a good measure of what I can talk about.

Mike

For a large site we need postgresql and oracle

kwyrick's picture

let's see how close Drupal can come to doing what i can do with http://openacs.org at http://oacsrocks.org.
start with calendar, and photo-album..those are my absolute minimum browser based applications which i have not been able to deploy in any of my cpanel drupal instances.
I'm also looking for a liveCD version of drupal but like i say in the title show me a full featured Drupal running postgresql and or oracle.

Are you joking

jredding's picture

Are you seriously judging a CMS package by the fact that it can run a calendar or a photo album? (both of which Drupal can do)
Then you are following that up by outright stating that for a large site you need postgres or Oracle?

Both of these comments are way off and I'm tempted to call them flame-bait especially since you seem to be complaining about a Drupal install you are doing from CPanel.

Why are you installing Drupal from cPanel and then complaining about it? That is just wrong.

Need I remind you that you are commenting in a Drupal meetup group which is intended for people that run or want to run Drupal and want to meet others that are interested in or are running Drupal. If you want to debate whether Drupal can handle lots of traffic and whether or not you need to run Postgres (supported) or Oracle (also supported by some) take it over to drupal.org just don't have it here on the groups forum. This is not the proper place.

Oracle Support: http://drupal.org/node/87073
High Performance Drupal: http://groups.drupal.org/high-performance

Finally if you want a "live cd" version Drupal (why.. oh why would you do this) just install it into your live CD.

AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!! This is such Flame bait.. Why did I respond? Hook, line, sinker and the firey debate begins. Damn.

Sorry to volunteer you Michael.. What do you think?

Sorry to Double Post This

platypus media's picture

Sorry if I'm double posting here, but about how long will I have to talk for? That will determine how many of those topics I'll be able to cover.

Mike

I don't know

jredding's picture

hpan: Can you shed a bit more light on what you are looking for, as well as the time frame you are allotting for this talk.

Michaelg: Sorry to volunteer you, if you're busy I'm sure someone else can make the talk. I just noticed you were in the PHP meetup group already; an insider so to speak ;)

Field of interesting

hpan-gdo's picture

I am actually looking for people to present their ideas in meeting, time frame between 15 to 20 miniutes. the idea can be variant, but relate to php/mysql, and drupal cms.

Most Important: presenter should allow audiences to ask questions?

any suggestions??

Jacob, I don't mind talking.

platypus media's picture

Jacob,

I don't mind talking. I saw the meetup listing here and signed up for it. I've been to a few NYPHP meetings in the past at the IBM building, and thought it would be interesting. That's how I came to be on that list. As for volunteering me, don't worry about it. I like hearing myself talk. ;)

Hpan,

15 to 20 minutes isn't a whole lot of time, but I'm sure I can throw together a brief overview of Drupal for ya, and I'm always available to answer questions.

Mike

if it's anything like nyphp....

cowboystyle's picture

If this group is like nyphp, then I can attest that the user audience would be able to follow something a little more upper level like the given list of Drupal talks. Our dB lecture this month covered some advanced topics.

  • jake

thank you for your time

hpan-gdo's picture

If you can present some of your idea to the meeting, that will be a plus.

Please let me know the topics you will cover some I can draw a structure list for the meeting.

thanks a lot .

HI guys, NYC PHP meetup wants YOU!

greengurl-gdo's picture

It's very casual - no hassle -

We just had our first meeting last month, and want to give the group some structure, and purpose.
You won't have to prepare a speech or anything; maybe a few of you can come along and spark a discussion with knowledge that's already in your head!

what do you say?

thanks

Those that didn't make it...

robbiethegeek's picture

Last night was fun a small intimate meetup, a split of developers and entrepreneurs. The host, Hang, ended up playing the Joomla advocate, since the Joomla specialist that was not able to attend. The group seems to be in turmoil so if there are any hardcore PHP folks out there that are interested, they will shortly be looking for some new leadership of the meetup group. It was nice to meet some new folks, and it is always fun to talk Drupal, especially exposing new folks to Drupal.

Robbie(theGeek)

i wasn't able to attend due

litwol's picture

i wasn't able to attend due to the heavy rain (my apologies for being composed out of sugar and fear to melt /joke). perhaps others had the same problem?
