Cinco de Mayo is my birthday!

Can we meet in a Mexican restaurant? (I'm 25% Mexican)

Great Idea

forestmars's picture

It could be a lot of fun to change our regular post-meeting location to a nearby Mexican place.

However we should make sure they are able to accommodate us.

Does anyone have ideas for this?

forestmars's picture

Yes, that's the photo I posted above… ;-)

Also as per discussion on IRC it should be noted that tonight's event is BYOS (Bring Yr Own Sombrero). Apologies for late notice to those of you that come straight from the office and didn't bring your sombreros today.

I'd like to invite Brian Gupta, and his Amazon partner to our meet-up to talk about Amazon Web Services as a hosting solution for Drupal. Brian's company profile page can be found here: http://aws.amazon.com/solutions/solution-providers/brandorr/

Everyone's talking about "The Cloud", but what exactly is it? Please join
us Wednesday, May 5th 2010 at 6:30pm for a discussion about Cloud
Computing with Amazon Web Services.

Since early 2006, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has provided users of all
sizes with an infrastructure web services platform in the cloud. With AWS
you can requisition compute power, storage, and other services - gaining
access to a suite of elastic IT infrastructure services on demand.

With AWS you have the flexibility to choose whichever development platform
or programming model makes the most sense for the problems you're trying
to solve.

The first half of the presentation will start with an overview of AWS,
exploring each individual service. The second half of the presentation will
be a discussion of how AWS services can best be leveraged by Drupal
developers and teams.

Look forward to this

DrupalCamp discussions

tobiassjosten's picture

DrupalCamp discussions doesn't sound all that exciting for us outsiders. :) So we changed our plans and wont be attending today. Hope you resolve all the issues and get some time to have a great Cinco de Mayo!

Please add DrupalCamp NYC 8 to the agenda

I'm not really sure you need to bump the thread, it's already featured, and I don't really see any unanswered questions anyway…

Or was that just a fist-bump?

Loads o' questions

Oana Radulescu's picture

Loads o' questions would be my contribution to this event!

I'm working on my first Drupal project and would love to hear feedback on how I've gone about implementing it - keeping my fingers crossed you care to hear about it :)

Looking forward to meeting you all!

Conflict Resolution in the NY Community

winston's picture

This is a tough one. A lot of folks will be all-hands-on trying to get drupalcampnyc8 going (myself included).

However this topic (http://groups.drupal.org/node/43940#comment-166188) from last month was purposely pushed to this month.

So where are we? I would be happy to discuss this over a beer with some of the folks who have been involved in the NYC community for a long time. I believe that right now the NYC community is not seen completely as a safe/friendly place to be by all who would like to participate. I'm personally of the opinion that with a little up front effort it is possible for us to come up with a good strategy to deal with conflict better in the future.

It was also suggested that May might even be too soon for this conversation so perhaps we want to push this out once more till June?

I just don't want to silently drop it.

I concur, this is not

orbgasm's picture

I concur, this is not something that should be dropped, but it looks like we've got a ton of stuff going on this week and it may need to be postponed?

Judging from conversations going on (on multiple different related subjects), the issue is still definitely active. Maybe there isn't anything to be lost by making a quick mention of it this week, and making a point of addressing it definitively in June. I'm sure everybody agrees with what you said; a little effort goes a long way! I know I do :)

I agreee as well, should not be dropped

mrynearson's picture

It should definitely not be dropped. I don't think we need to belabor the the events that transpired as much as how these issues should be handled in the future. In my opinion these should be handled by the group in a BOF type environment, not by late night IRC chats or other back channels. There should be an agreed upon process for any future issues.

I think there are two different issues here:

mcaudy's picture

I think there are two different issues here:

1) the discussion of general procedures for handling conflict resolution, as suggested previously by nikkiana on this post:

http://groups.drupal.org/node/43940#comment-166188

which is very different from

2) the discussion of the recent threats of violence on #drupal-nyc that was planned for discussion at the last meetup, but later postponed:

http://groups.drupal.org/node/43940#comment-174663

I think it would be fine to have a discussion of item 1 at the next meetup, if there is time.

I also think the discussion of item 2 should wait until later. For one thing, winston and I were supposed to lead that discussion, but I will not be able to attend the next meetup, as I have to go to the wedding of a Mexican friend on that day (Cinco de Mayo). It is fine with me if someone else wants to lead that discussion, but if so, I think it should be postponed until later.

quid.oblitus's picture

Given mcaudy's not being able to participate. I also think that Jen Simmons' suggestion that we postpone this discussion until later in the summer is a good suggestion.

As mentioned they are 2 seperate issues

mrynearson's picture

We should address Nikki's BOF tonite, as its been 2 meetings since it was brought up. We shouldn't push it back any further or let it slide away.

The second issue that Mcaudy brought up should certainly wait til all are present. Actaually if the first issue is resolved, we would have a process and infrastructure to resolve the second.

I think that if/whenever we

ezra-g's picture

I think that if/whenever we resume this discussion, we should be clear about what our objective is in doing so. It's clearly a heated issue and understanding why we're bringing it up and what we hope to accomplish helps keep the conversation directed towards progress, rather than just revisiting a situation where people are in conflict.

Different discussions

jensimmons's picture

There are definitely two different discussions.

One is about whether or not the NYC Drupal community feels like it needs a "Conflict resolution process" in place for any future somethings that might come up.

The other is about doing something about recent threats of violence and safety — making a strong statement that sexism and hate speech will not be tolerated, or doing something.

Confusing these two discussions or thinking talking about one is the same as talking about the other is problematic. I am quite disappointed in the lack of effort in responding to the threats against me. I won't be coming to tonight's meetup.

I will be doing the Q&A BoF table...

johnvsc's picture

as usual, outside the main conference room just before presentations.

If you have any questions concerning drupal, esp starting to work with some part that you don't have confidence in, I will do my best to answer your question.

If i can't or don't know ... i will point you in the direction of someone who knows :)

So, if you have questions, please bring them and your curiosity.

Do you think this can be tied

orbgasm's picture

Do you think this can be tied in with the Drupal Dojo discussion?

It would be my preference to

nikkiana's picture

It would be my preference to start having the discussion regarding procedures for conflict resolution sooner rather than later, so tonight if possible. I don't want to let any more time pass on the issue.

In any case, our first

ezra-g's picture

In any case, our first priority should be to nail down the essential logistical details for DrupalCamp. A discussion about conflict resolution should be scheduled in such a way that folks don't have to chose between these two very important discussions, meaning afterward if there is time.

I agree about afterward

winston's picture

I'm going to def agree with Ezra. I think we should start the discussion at the end of the meeting or after.

I think this is something that will be discussed at multiple meetups and possibly at drupalcamp as well.

Both issues can be addressed tonite

mrynearson's picture

The conflicvt resoltion bof has been on the table for 2 meetings now, it should be addressed tonight. Several people here have expressed that desire. We've done drupal camps fore over 4 years now, its not our first rodeo. As mentioned before its not meant to be a finger pointing exercise. Rather a proactive desire to haqve a process for any future issues.

My central position on this is the group has not had an opportunity to address this face to face. Not everyone is on gdo or irc. Since we are a community, the community should have an opportunity to discuss this, in person.

Introduction & Regrets

ds1964's picture

I've signed up for this evening but due to work demands won't be able to attend. However I'd like to introduce myself. I've been working with Drupal on and off at work for a little over a year and am now trying to build my first production ready site. I'm particularly interested in the Semantic Web and geodata.

Looking forward to future meet ups!

Very iconic username

Guess we'll have to ask you about that next time.

Dojo Notes?

ericduran's picture

Hi everyone,
I'm no longer able to attend this meetup because of work demands.

I'm mostly interested in what happens revolving the DrupalCamp8 and the Dojo discussions. I'm sure the they'll be notes regarding drupalcamp8 but is there any chances that the discussions regarding the local dojo session can be posted back on the original local dojo page or somewhere on NYC gdo.

Thanks.

Also Not Able to Make It Tonight

Oana Radulescu's picture

But wasn't sure how/whether to notify the group. Looking forward to meeting you all at future events. My experience with Drupal is to be using it to build a distribution channel (really, an e-commerce website) for a certain kind of jewelry .. The business idea is a few months old, the Drupal experience a few days old but so far I am enjoying the world of Drupal very much. Enjoy the meet-up and Cinco de Mayo margaritas!
