February 20th Meetup Proposal

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hey everyone,

There is a lot of discussion about when/where to have our future meetups. In order to get things moving I would like to volunteer to cosponsor a meeting in February along with AffinityLab, which is a small business incubator and coworking facility located in the heart of Adams Morgan.

Meeting at AffinityLab will include the following features:

  • convenient location in the heart of the city
  • large meeting room that can hold 50 to 100 people
  • a real projector
  • reliable internet connection
  • no ambient house music during presentations

For more information visit: http://affinitylab.com

Obviously the lab is not a restaurant, so there will no table service and there is a small reservation fee for the meeting room. I propose that people should contribute either $10 to cover the space and some plates of sandwiches OR they can bring some beer or other drinkable treats. Paypals can be set up to facilitate contribution.

Since many people would like to see the meetings take place on a weekday, I propose we plan for Wednesday, February 20th. Let me know if there might be some conflict for a significant portion of the community. If this first meetup goes well, AffinityLab may be interested in hosting the group on an ongoing basis.

Sound good to you?

That sounds excellent, Mike. I didn't know AffinityLab was there.

Wednesday evening is good for me, and this sounds like a terrific space for a meetup. I'll gladly pay $10!

This is great for me, both being in the city and during the week. I'll be there!

Who's wants to do

Who's wants to do presentations?

Here's a starting list of ideas
- D6 presentation
- D6 Theming
- Installing Drupal
- Module showcase
- Theme showcase
- Site showcase

On the subject of installing

cellmaker's picture

It would be great for somebody with experience to give an explanation about strategies/ techniques for easy upgrades. I'd also love to get the close-up view of how to modify the httpd.conf file for clean-URL. There are so many entries, and so many different "solutions" put forward on drupal.org that it's hard to know what's best.

Installing/upgrades

laken's picture

We are starting to use a system for laying out Drupal installations on our server that uses symlinks to cleanly separate Drupal core distributions from the /sites directories themselves. This makes upgrading nearly risk-free, and easy as changing a symlink. If there is interest I'll be happy to do a 5-min presentation on this.

Sounds good to me

It looks like I'll even be in town so I can come.

I'd like to do a site showcase...

Explaining how the site was built on Drupal in around 20 hours or so, doing some very nifty stuff, including some theming tricks and other cool stuff.

Big ups for getting this going again

Hey Mike -

Great job getting the meetups going again. I was talking with someone about this the other day.

I would like to do a site showcase - www.pagesix.com.

I'd be interested in your pagesix.com site showcase. It's a nice site, I'd be curious how you put it together.

Presentaions

mikemccaffrey's picture

I may be able to do a presentation myself on a module I wrote to block spam to anonymous comment forms without using a CAPTCHA field. Mostly would be a strategy session for outsmarting automated scripts.

In any case, I think that we should limit presentations to 5 minutes. It seemed to have worked well at past meetups, and would be a good way to break the ice and just quickly let people know who has experience doing what, so that if someone is interested in further details they can approach the presenter later.

Sound good?

5 Minute Presentations

castig's picture

Are the 5 minute talks generally used to present an overview of a drupal sites that we have created? Or should we focus on one task or one specific drupal concept? Any other ideas for presentations?

I thought this was helpful.

jrabeemer's picture

I thought this was helpful. The article talks about meetups and the inherent skill-level divide amongst n00bs and advanced developers.

http://knaddison.com/drupal/drupal-user-group-skill-levels

And Dries has a running node about this topic.

http://drupal.org/node/160239

It seems like it would be a good idea to have a beginner session and advanced sessions. Or another way, show & tell and building-a-drupal-site sessions.

sounds good. What time?

luckydad's picture

Hi-
I would gladly pay $10 to attend. What time? (If there is a standard time for these to start/end or I missed it in the discussion above, my apologies.) I will be coming in from Northern VA so want to make sure I can leave enough time.
Thanks,
Michael

iCal event feeds gone from this site?

laken's picture

Used to be on this site each group had an iCal feed of the group's events. That made it easy for me to subscribe using iCal on my Mac, and I could see at a glance the meetups on my calendar. Now it looks like this functionality has been removed from groups.drupal.org - anyone know how to get it back?

For that matter, there doesn't even seem to be a calendar view for each group on the site itself - seems like a big oversight. anyone have any insight into this? I sent a message through the contact form but have got no reply.

Works for me!
