Potential action items and agenda for LA Drupal '08

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
You are viewing a wiki page. You are welcome to join the group and then edit it. Be bold!

The intent behind this wiki is to brainstorm action items, potential projects, and key roles (for the greater good of Drupal) in which the Los Angeles Drupal Group could participate. Ideally we can pull together a few plans/ideas that may be useful to other local groups.

Drupal 6 - our underlying theme

With Drupal 6 officially released, we should do all that we can to promote and showcase all it's benefits. There's a related post that details what we can do on a local level.

Learning and mentoring

Interface with the Drupal learning and mentoring groups

  • help define the goals, vision and values of the Drupal Dojo Group and DROP (the continuation of the GHOP project)
  • help establish a process for open collaborative development and learning (first stab at a process here)
  • open up channels of communication/collaboration with Drupal, Drupal Dojo, DROP other related efforts; ensure the efforts are complimentary (this is an important issue).
  • propose/create/administer engaging tasks and collaborative workshops (this is good point of reference)
    • Barn Raising, Code Sprints, and Mentor Nights - people are talking about various ways people can get together and collaborate - let's see what's feasible for everyone and what would be fun.
    • take a lead on projects/tasks important to the larger community
    • openly develop and create learning materials from home grown projects
      • LADrupal.org - it's a place for us to show our stuff, individually and as a community. Can we collaborate with other regional groups to and create a kick-ass install profiles? Maybe there's an opportunity for some friendly competition
      • The Collaboration Foundation is a non-profit organization creating collaborative art addressing various social issues. Starting with the shortest film ever made (The 1 Second Film), they will oversee a 5 Phase series of non-profit films built around an innovative method of micro-collaboration.

Production

Produce/provide a rich set of marketing materials and courseworks

  • plan, budget, and coordinate multimedia production (audio, video, interactive, etc.)
  • Help Drupal Docs - we're always going to talk about how we can expand, revise, or add to the official Drupal documentation (handbooks), it'll only be for the best.
  • produce case studies
  • create Drupal elevator pitches (related post here)
  • Create/sell/give away LA Drupal t-shirts, stickers, and other swag
  • produce/present engaging promotional and fundraising events
    • connect/collaborate with other tech scenes in the area
    • cross promote with others in your area that may be using Drupal

Outreach and marketing

Look for ways to make new audiences aware of Drupal

  • Attract peripheral Drupal types to become more closely involved and active
    • Make sure the new comers are not scared off - plan for every meeting to have at least one new face, we'll want to make them feel welcomed.
    • We can do this by (1) introducing ourselves, (2) provide newbie content, (3) be open to questions, (4) don't be shy when enjoying presentations (ask questions, show people it's okay to ask "easy" questions).
    • More presentations at meetings. We're shooting to offer a basic (newbie) presentation that doesn't have to last long and will be good for the new comers. This can be done by veterans and new speakers - perfect for practicing before DrupalCamp! We would also like to see a non-newbie presentation by any member who is willing to step up.
  • evangelize/discuss issues important to our local community
    • actively contribute to the Drupal Newsletter and other outreach programs
    • let's talk about what's happening in our local scene
    • what are some cool projects?
    • spotlight local developers and firms
  • connect, collaborate, compete with other Drupal working and regional groups
    • Non-L.A. Drupal speakers - yup, hot shots that aren't in the L.A.
area will be courted to present at our in-person group meetings.

Business and incentives

Identify business models in an open development atmosphere

  • explore/evaluate non-monetary and monetary incentives
  • write grants and proposals
  • provide multiple vehicles for fundraising and sponsorships
    • put together sponsorship packages for project/product development and production
  • form a collective of local developers, designers, project managers
    • collaborate on open/drupal projects
    • take on client work
    • establish alliances with other drupal shops
