I'm considering hosting the SF Drupal Users Group - I've got the prime space and enough knowledge to make me dangerous - and I want to find out what the interest is. The space is PariSoMa, on Howard at 10th.
I'm thinking of making it alternate with the Berkeley DUG, and given when I'm in the SF office, I'm thinking 2nd Monday of the month.
My personal preference is right after work - 5-7pm, mostly because it's a working space and we couldn't do a mid-day meeting right there (unlike East Bay). It also then allows a different set of people to participate.
That would mean the first one would be March 10th, right after people get back from DrupalCon. Sound good?

Great idea
Great idea. When I first started BDUG I assumed we would meet after work, but it turned out there was a huge demand from on-campus folk who wanted to come as part of their official jobs.
Are you thinking the same kind of mixed audience thing, or maybe more developer focused (he says hopefully)?
Also, it would be great if you could start a little later to give us 9-to-5 types (who don't work in your office) a chance to get there.
Criss-cross?
Well, I was imagining a mixed audience since I'm not a developer myself, but who knows - I don't have an agenda per se. We could always slowly shift the focus of audiences so that Berkeley was developer focused, and SF perhaps general user and business focused (given what's here)? Ultimately, though, I think SF will start out focused on who is there and what they have to share....
Point noted about the time- that's easy from my POV, but there might be others who want to get home (to family) at reasonable times and opt for earlier meetings. So far, though, your suggestion is in the lead. ;-)

Willing and able
I'm in the east bay, but would be willing to make a trek to SF as often as I could. I am newbie and I enjoy using durpal and the community. I am thirsty for knowledge and would like to be involved as much as I can.
I have access to a good deal of space in Hayward, CA (I am a Supervisor with the Rec & Park District) I can get meeting space... even some nice size halls if ever needed.
I'll keep and eye on this page, and let me know if you need any assistance.

More user oriented
Hey Hey,
I like the idea of maybe making the SF meet-up more of a user and beginner oriented meet-up. I love attending Tao's meet-ups in Berekely, but I always have an instinct to want to talk more about the business and plain speak sort of marketing language of using and adopting drupal. it could be a great balance across the bay.
I think maybe it is tougher to organize this type of meet-up because of the ambiguity of the subject. It is so broad, where as a development oriented meet-up is focused and immediately practical and obvious.
Some of the topics I push around in my head alot are
Sounds great!
thanks for offering to start this up! It will be a really valuable addition to the Bay Area Drupal community. Monday evenings would be great for me. I don't care whether it starts at five, 530, or six o'clock [the weird formatting is a result of voice dictation]. I would enjoy it if there could also be a focus on how to do things, in other words more of an instructional format. I realize this might not match as well with a developer focus, but it would be great if we could do it some of the time.
Regardless of what we do, I'm sure I will learn something each time!
I would be interested in attending
I don't know the nuts and bolts of Drupal as yet, but have my own website and am a FileMaker developer with my own FileMaker-based product. I am also a blogger and interested in the social web. Drupal seems like a possible next thing to learn and consult in perhaps as an adjunct to my desktop-based FileMaker databases. My first project may be to do my web presence in Drupal.

Great Success!
Attended the first meeting, it was great. Small group, but very interesting. Kudos to Greg for getting this off the ground! I got some very interesting leads.
Re. meeting space, UCSF may be a possibility also. We've got facilities for this sort of thing -- although alcohol may not be an option then! :)
We've got one coming up!
Jeff (from the last meeting) is offering the space. We'l post an announcement in the next couple of days. :-)
In the meantime, anyone wanna do a presentation?

Presentation proposal
I don't know how many people are interested, but I'd love to do a presentation on User Relationships. Depending on time and/or interest I can talk about only front-end, higher level stuff, or go in to the API.
You're on!
See the post about when and where:

I would suggest front-end and higher-level presentation, and you can take questions on the API..... :-)

yeah! DUG is back :)
just wanted to chime in to manifest interest. i'm currently working as the web producer for a UCSF Drupal site, and could contribute some stories or tricks. i'm not a php developer, but i'm good with css, and i have played in drupal for a little while. in fact, i attended the first DUG meeting hosted by mister smokinggoat, back in 2005 :)
looking forward to meet. the parisoma location, and monday evenings work perfectly for me.
comment: there is/was a bay area drupal users meet-up, but it was mostly located in the south bay, and now the organizer stepped down...

Sign me up
Planning on meeting again? Willing to cross a bridge to get there, as I doubt we'll ever see a Marin DUG.
2nd Monday of the month
Hey Cayenne -
2nd Monday of the month is the SF DUG (sorta opposite the East Bay group's calendar, which is last Thursday). This month SF DUG will be on Bastille Day! (July 14th)! So we'll do something appropriately French. ;-)

Whats the focus?
I would love to attend and look from the business aspects of building a large custom consumer site on drupal. We are building the next generation VMware Virtual Appliance Marketplace on drupal and would be interested in experiences and developer aspects of such sites.
Come by - and start the conversation!
Why don't you come by the next meeting - and raise the question? There's always time during the evening for open discussion.
Hope to see you Monday!
