The new drupal.org site is live! What do you think?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

This is very exciting: the redesigned drupal.org site launched yesterday. Drupal.org was long overdue for a redesign and reorganization. I've been using the site for over 5 1/2 years, and although it had seen several technical upgrades during that time, it had not received either a visual redesign or a fundamental reorganization of the information architecture.

The new drupal.org has both a new fresh look and totally reorganized navigation and search, as well as many new features. It should make it much easier for beginners and experienced community members alike to find what they need, get help, and see what's happening with Drupal development.

If you don't already have an account on drupal.org, now would be a great time to register (it's free).

I'm just getting used to the new design and features (5 1/2 years is a long time!) but so far I'm really impressed with the design and usability of the new site.

The site was over 2 years in design, planning, and development, and professional designers, IA, UX people were hired to help. You can see how much work and planning went into the process: http://bit.ly/ci2aIz

What do you think of the new drupal.org?

Drupal Groups

Now lets hope they do the same thing for Drupal Groups. It could use some spiffying up.

Thanks for the info on the new Drupal.org site.

g.d.o. will follow

This redesign project encompasses all the sites in the drupal.org domain. http://association.drupal.org was the first site to get the new design, now the main drupal.org site, but Groups is on the way, along with others like http://api.drupal.org.

There's actually quite a massive site infrastructure that powers all this stuff, and in the past year they rolled out a federated login system, so you must register and login on drupal.org in order to use groups.drupal.org (used to be separate registrations/logins)

This is not to mention all the DrupalCon sites, like http://dc2009.drupal.org, http://sf2010.drupal.org, http://cph2010.drupal.org, and of course http://chicago2011.drupal.org – which I hope some of you will attend! (Though I think the Drupalcon sites will retain their distinctive look/branding.)

Awesome

It looks great. High five for the epic search function. It looks perfect.

Related Modules?

digerati's picture

Noticed the switcho changeo last night. Looks awesome! Works awsome.. except...

When you were on a specific Module's project page with the old design, there used to be a block on the right that contained Related Modules. This was a great way to see other solutions that I may not have heard of or been aware of.

Can anyone see how to achieve this function somewhere else (maybe the vastly improved search?), or where Related Modules are located that I'm just not seeing them? Search results filtered to Modules, sorted by Relevancy would probably include these Related Modules...? Just not quite as convenient.

Thanks!!

good question

laken's picture

Brett, I don't know how the related modules list was generated, or why it's now gone. I do know that a lot of effort went into the UX for discvoverability of modules in the redesign. I like how you can search by categories now, and the new sorting orders.

I may actually start using Drupal.org to find stuff again – for years I've used Google to search d.o. because the old site search was so bad (though I heard they improved it some time back.)

Issues are barely usable

Gabriel R.'s picture

Module Issue pages are very hard to read now. Here's why:

  • The gray, smaller fonts are hard to read.
  • The all-width long lines are too long. Please add a sidebar in there. Or increase the font size.
  • The large section title "Download & Extend" is useless and confusing. Please replace it with the actual page title.

Thanks.

Still no "subscribe to comments" option. So we're in for "Subscribe" comments for a while.

Good point, Gabriel.

I can't believe that functionality was omitted from the re-design, as well. Seems like a no-brainer to me.
