dougvann's picture

Hey all!
I'm going to be in town starting tomorrow afternoon and leaving late Friday.
I'll be spending my days with a client but I'll have my nights available! Who's going to show this Hoosier around?
I'll be arriving into town about 4pm Monday the 29th. I'm staying at La Quinta Inn Grove City
3962 Jackpot Rd.
I made a similar announcement to the Houston group when I was out there last month and we had a blast!
Reply to this thread with any ideas. I'd love to hang out with the OH Crew!

Grove City is Brian's area,

mradcliffe's picture

Grove City is Brian's area, but there are probably better happy hour deals going on in the arena district or the short north. Again, Brian?

If you want awesome Greek, then the best place is Yanni's. But that's over in my end of town: north.

I'm free Monday (though tired and on west coast time), Wednesday, and Thursday.

I was really hoping for

Brian294's picture

I was really hoping for Santa, but I suppose Doug Vann will do. :-)

If you want an incredible selection of 50 craft beers at half price and $1 grilled cheese sandwiches, Bodega in the short north district is the place to go on Mondays (get there early!!! the wait is about an hour):
http://www.columbusbodega.com/

If you want the best pizza in Columbus, along with craft beer, there is a joint on the North side in the Polaris Parkway area called BJ's Brewhouse:
http://www.bjsbrewhouse.com/

If you want the best deal on craft beer ($2 pints), along with some local live music, you'll want to check out Woodland Tavern (formerly Thirsty Ear) in the Grandview Heights area:
http://www.thethirstyear.com/

If you want some Columbus brewed craft beer, and a great barbecue menu (and some fantastic sauerkraut balls), you've got to check out Barley's Smokehouse & Brewpub in Grandview Heights.

There is a place in Grove City that has KILLER mexican food and margaritas. It's called Tres Portrillos.

BJ's is pretty bad imho. The

BJ's is pretty bad imho. The bar is pretty non-existent.

Best pizza would either be Adriatico's or Antolino's (the latter if you're not around Campus).

ah! when was the last time

Brian294's picture

ah! when was the last time you went to BJs? The bar seats 60+! i guess the pizza sucks if you're health-conscious and hate grease rolling down your chin. ;-)

Awesome list BUT!!!

dougvann's picture

Dude! That list ROX! But [like Drupal] so many options causes a steep learning curve.
I'll rely on you to be the expert and recommend your fav choice. LOL

LOL...still missed some...

crimsondryad's picture

For instance, Skully's in the Short North. That one is absolutely iconic, even after it moved. And besides, everyone has to wander into Magnolia Thunderpussy at least once...just so you have a reason to say the name in casual conversation. muhahhahah

And for to-die-for Italian (the tortellini is just creamy cheesy heaven), there is Salvi's Bistro out in Hilliard.

Doug, I work right next to Barley's. Let me know when you're going to go and I can hang for a bit...

A night at the Bodega!

dougvann's picture

Brian and I had a blast at the Bodega. The craft-brews were killer. The 90minute IPA was the best.
And here's the weird part... The grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup were awesome!
Tomorrow night we're thinking a trip to Tres Potrillos is in order.
Any body else in? ;-)

90 Minute IPA is my current

OldAccount's picture

90 Minute IPA is my current favorite, excellent choice. I usually get it on draft for $3 at Hal & Al's (GREAT craft beer selection and they use Drupal, haha) but that's probably a neighborhood people wouldn't be interested in visiting...

CODUG went to Hal and Al's

pfisher's picture

CODUG went to Hal and Al's after a meeting about 2 months ago. The food is great, and beer selection is always changing. "but that's probably a neighborhood people wouldn't be interested in visiting..." don't they refer to this as the 'Parson's challenge.'

Lol, it could definitely mean

OldAccount's picture

Lol, it could definitely mean that to some people, but the Parson's Challenge is the "30 different beers in 30 days" thing. Which I'm proud to say I've completed.

oops, we are kinda hijacking

pfisher's picture

oops, we are kinda hijacking the thread here...

http://www.halandals.com/photos/gallery/419
I don't see you, was it before the web photo gallery, which BTW is a Drupal site. woot woot!

That makes me think, we should compile a list of Columbus "drupal bars" and conduct a tour over the course of the 2011. How many do you think there might be? Ahh and a there is a game, like guessing the pennies in a jar, winner gets something come 2012, maybe a Mayan desk calendar. :-)

I'm there

OldAccount's picture

http://www.halandals.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/full/winner012.jpg

It's a terrible photo. I had just finished my #30, Gulden Draak (10% ABV) what can I say.

Excellent idea, a Drupal bar tour!

(Sorry for hijacking the thread.)

haha, that was my guess

pfisher's picture

I thought that one looked closest to your profile pic.
Was that alot of effort? You must live nearby.
I think I'd like to add the Parson's challenge to my grand list of non-productive achievements. (it is quite impressive) :-)
Although it almost makes me think of the slogan, "I spent a month on a bar stool and all I got was this lousy T-shirt"

We'll have to pitch the idea to them to allow people to log-in and track their progress and let others follow along, and allow web suggestions on what beer to try next, with facebook capabilities. Ha, yeah like you click on a user and it shows a calendar with the label of the beer they drank each day. and how many times they have attempted it.

Wow, those are some fancy feature ideas, I like it!

OldAccount's picture

Right now the tracking system is a notecard with whatever arbitrary rating system you come up with. Your system would be awesome. Sounds like he doesn't have the best Drupal guy though, he always asks me questions about stuff that the guy says Drupal can't do (nonsense!)... I told him I'm available to work on his site if he wants but so far he hasn't taken up the offer.

No I actually live in Grandview, but I'm a vegan and love craft beer so it's worth the drive for me. The challenge wasn't too bad, if you do 2 or 3 each trip you can knock it out pretty quickly. It does add up though, I hate to think how much that t-shirt really cost me. You should definitely do it though, it's fun! It was helpful for me (being new to the craft beer scene) to learn what kinds I liked and didn't like. The 2 bartenders were really helpful with suggesting what to try based on how I rated the other ones so far.

I thought you had to drink

pfisher's picture

I thought you had to drink one each day. But now I see it is 30 beers within a 30 day time frame. So I was calculating the cost as a trip to the bar each day. The monetary, opportunity cost added up rather quickly.

You tend to burn capital switching developers, and Hal & Al's is probably getting a pretty good deal.

"suggesting what to try based on how I rated the other ones so far." What a cool craft beer feature. A Netflix style beer recommendation.

I'm starting a new thread to continue this discussion: Drupal + Beer + Columbus : http://groups.drupal.org/node/109819

I'll check back later today to catch the time and place u guys r going tonight, I'm looking to show up. I've got an Adobe user group meeting first, will you folks be out a bit later?

I'm interested in joining everyone

If you guys pick a veggie-friendly place I'd love to join you all as well. Haven't seen Doug since Do It With Drupal about a year ago. Welcome to Columbus, Doug!

I won't be able to make it

mradcliffe's picture

I won't be able to make it that late as I have some other things I need to do, but I can do something earlier.

Any update from Brian or Doug on schedule?

early

Brian294's picture

The earlier the better for me. I have some work that needs to be done tonight and need to be home before 9pm. Yesterday, we started at 6pm, but I don't know what Doug's work schedule looks like today.

oh, one other thing

Brian294's picture

FYI: Tres Potrillos' happy hour is from 2pm to 7pm.

I would prefer not to be out

shawn.palmer's picture

I would prefer not to be out too late and from the sound of it I would say that 6:30ish would be best for everyone.

Doug, what time will work for

ranvaig's picture

Doug, what time will work for you? We could meet you there any time. If you want to call, 614-365-0133.

for all those healthy folks, there's always Northstar. I love their food, but I don't love $11 burgers.

I thought the idea for

I thought the idea for tonight was Tres Potrillos during happy hour.

Sharon Palmer

I just got off the phone with

ranvaig's picture

I just got off the phone with Doug, he's leaving downtown for Tres Potrillos now, and will hang out there for most of the night. We'll be leaving soon too, but have a little farther to come.

Sharon Palmer

Heading there now myself.

mradcliffe's picture

Heading there now myself. I'll probably get there at 6pm or a bit later given traffic on 270.

Drupal Camp at Ohio Linuxfest

ranvaig's picture

Once I got there, the night at Tres Potrillos turned into planning for Drupal Camp at Ohio Linuxfest. OLF has offered us space to program with no charge to us.

The consensus is that one track on Saturday is enough to plan for. We need to raise money for speakers, but that should be do-able. Not speaker fees, but hotel rooms and possible plane tickets.

I'll contact the OLF program staff, and start writing a letter soliciting donations. I'm going to take point on this, but if anyone else wants to be involved, just let me know.

Hal & Al's Wednesday night.

dougvann's picture

I believe we're doing Hal & Al's on Wednesday night.
1297 Parsons Ave, Columbus, OH 43206 (Hal & Al's Bar)
Depending on traffic, I can be there about 5:30ish. We can settle in and hang out for as long as the gang's up for it.

BY THE WAY.... Has any one noticed what we've all accomplished over here? http://groups.drupal.org/hot
LOL!!!

I'll probably get there around 6pm depending on traffic / weather.

try and swing by tonight

bigjim's picture

I couldn't do last night but I'm gonna try and stop by tonight (especially since you're gonna be near my neck of the woods) after dinner.

Next meeting topic

bigjim's picture

It just hit me this may be a good topic for the next meeting? (not Doug Vann being in town but the DrupalCamp :))

Well I missed it last night

pfisher's picture

Matt thanks for txting me when u guys turned in, so I didn't make a pointless trip across town.

bummed I missed out, although the Columbus Digital UG was cool, we had a Security Analyst from Cisco Security Intelligence Operations talking about web app security.
http://groups.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=post.display&postid=32515
Got me to thinking of asking Nick Leali to do something for CODUG, perhaps mix it up with some of http://crackingdrupal.com/, and perhaps have a giveaway of Greg's book. I would think by the end of the meeting people would see how smart a choice building on drupal is, compared to the great unknown inherent in custom ground up solutions.

Glad to see we're meeting at Hal & Al's. I plan to make it tonight.

Hello to all, I've just

ali.sharif's picture

Hello to all, I've just joined to this group, i hope i can useful for these members!

No plans tonight, but LUNCH TOMORROW?

dougvann's picture

I'm not going out tonight. I need to get some client work done.
Last night at Hal & Al's was a blast! I had the Luna Burger with Lettuce, Tomato, Mayo, Sauerkraut, and Salsa. [yah.. I wasn't sure how'd it taste either. It ROCKED!!]

Who's up for lunch tomorrow? I'm at 35 E Chestnut, which is close to Michael O'Tooles. I have wheels if I need to venture out.

any takers for lunch on Friday?

3 more months of Doug Vann

dougvann's picture

Hey gang!
Thanks to all [especially Brian] for making the week an absolute BLAST!
The whirlwind tour included The Bodega, Hal & Al's, Impero, Michael O'Tooles, Tres Patrillos, & even the Nationwide Cafe!

On the way out of Columbus, I saw my Shadow. So it appears as though I will be over again for another week in Jan, Feb, and Mar!
I'll keep you posted and who knows; maybe we'll hit the GDO Hot-List again as we make our plans to hangout!
