Proposed Topics (first meeting)

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

What would you like to see as a topic at our first meeting? What are your greatest success or challenges in working with Drupal? What would you love to know more about? Check the Wiki page.

Please be open here. I worry someone might feel embarrassed because they think their topic suggestion might be too simple or basic or something everyone knows. I'm sure we've got people at different levels of knowledge about Drupal, and it's a big topic. I still feel I have a lot to learn myself. Here are some thoughts on my part:

  • Introductions by group members, brief presentations on how we are using Drupal
  • Intro to Drupal 7
  • Theming
  • Module Development

I think we should brainstorm: let's put up some lists of ideas without any criticism. Once we have a solid list of topics from a variety of contributors, we can start narrowing down to the best topics for us to start with and what topics we should leave off for future sessions.

Topics

ezeedub's picture

Just to help get the ball rolling, here are a few topics I'm currently interested in. I'm by no means an expert in any of them, but since I'd like to know more, I should probably present on them as a good way to learn!

Site Building

  • features
  • panels

Development

  • peer review
  • dev environment
  • drush (many potential topics by command/groups of commands)
  • git
  • eclipse ide

Theming

  • Fusion vs Zen vs ??

I'm okay with a very informal presentation format to begin with while we get the group up and running. Another good agenda item might be something like "what I read in the world of drupal this last month that's interesting".

Features would be a benefit

hayskelly's picture

Features would be a benefit to me, I don't know anything about it, and would like to know more. I started to use panels a year ago and use it on every page, it would be nice if someone could walk-through on some advanced things on panels.

On theming site of things, I could talk about 960 and framework. I would find all those topics on the development side really interesting.

Drupal Entities

Howdy,

I would also be interested in some Drupal under the hood discussions. For example the introduction of entities in D7.

"One of the biggest changes at the architecture level of Drupal 7 is the introduction of entities as an abstraction for content."

If you have worked with drupal for any time, this is a pretty serious change to how things get done.

Great additions

Thanks, guys, I have included your suggestions in the Wiki post.

Time

hayskelly's picture

Shall we pick a time, I was thinking 7pm. Any other thoughts on that time?

Works for me.

First meeting

ezeedub's picture

Sadly, I'm out of town this week and have to miss this first meeting. (Happily though it's for a Drupal 7 seminar starring Drupal rockstar superstar Angie "webchick" Byron.) :)

I think I have a free venue lined up though that meets all three of your criteria Accretor... More on that later...

Drupal 7 Seminar

Perhaps you'll post some notes for us or offer a presentation of some sort at our first event?

First meeting

So was I wrong to assume that we are meeting tonight (Thursday Jan 20) at the buzz coffee shop?

First Meeting

Accretor's picture

Yes, I'd say so, hozzy. We had this listed as "proposed" but details were never finalized. I apologize if there was any inconvenience. Here are a couple points:

  1. By way of explanation for my recent silence, here are some explanations. I have been suffering from food poisoning since Monday. I believe I have finally recovered. I haven't felt like throwing up once today. It's great. My wife also had a surgery, also on Monday, and has had a hard time coping with the pain. She's finally on the mend and seems to be doing better at last. This doesn't change the fact that I should have been monitoring and responding to this group, and I'm sorry about that.
  2. Buzz is way unreasonable. They told me $275 to book, plus $20/hour and the keep all proceeds from sales. I thought that was ridiculous. Haven't made the time with these other distractions to look into other options we've discussed. I look forward to hearing what zeedub has for us.

No worries

hayskelly's picture

I totally understand and sympathize with your situation. Food poisoning is horrible.

If there is anything I can do to help, let me know.

Help

Accretor's picture

Well, I think the primary help we need right now is to find a location that is available at the appropriate day and time (adjustments can be considered though if we have a good venue) and at no cost. I'd encourage other group members to follow up on some of the suggestions made here or to explore their own ideas. Just let us know what you learn in a relatively timely fashion so we don't end up going to the same venues and asking the same questions you just did. ;)

How about thursday feb 17

j.am's picture

Hello everyone! Well the third thursday of the month is this thursday, the 17th. Due to lack of posting, I am assuming that there is a general loss of momentum here, which is easily remedied by actually meeting.

I propose that considerations of formally booking a place in order to have projection screens be deferred for the time being, and we gather on thursday at a convenient location with conversation (and laptops if so moved) as the focus. I would like to meet everyone and see how they are using Drupal and what their interests are going forward. I think that should make an excellent start, but I would also like to discuss any or all of the topics proposed above. You know, sometimes just getting the ball rolling is enough. Presentations are great, but I bet that even if all 5 (?) of us show up, it will be pretty informal at that size. I'm really interested in hearing how people are working with theming frameworks and if anyone is doing any mobile theming, also I know Ed has a ton of interest in command line dev environment efficiency, and I would love to discuss that.

Since the venue seems to be so troublesome, with almost every coffee shop in town rolling up the sidewalk at 5pm, why not a pub? The longwood brew pub by north town center or the Windward pub by the hospital or the top floor of the lighthouse bistro downtown in the harbour all spring to mind. And yes, they all serve coffee, though at 7pm I'm ready to put the caffeine away....

Let's do this thing!

ezeedub's picture

Good call j.am. Easy to fix. Let's do this on Thursday.

As it is, I think I've found us a place!

I'm going to verify the day right now and I'll post here as soon as I hear back (it can take a day or two). So, if it's a go, are we good with that? If not, I'm good with any pub. Off the top of my head, I vote for the Lighthouse Bistro.

I'm sold

I will likely be in Nanaimo on Thursday so I would like to attend. To confirm this meeting will be at 7 PM, Thursday Feb 17th. Thanks!

Yep

ezeedub's picture

I'll be there at least. By the elevator, at the curling club, at 7pm...

I just confirmed our location here.

See you on thurs

I'll be there

Can't make it this week.

Hi
I am afraid that the 3rd Thursday of the month conflicts with the Blues Cabaret here in Chemainus. As I am the videographer for this event I will not be available. Dammit.
Art

Is the third thursday always bad for you?

j.am's picture

Or is this just a one-time conflict? If the third thursday of the month is never good, what nights would work for you?

third thursday

ajsoles's picture

Yes the third thursday is always bad. Any other thursday is fine.

third thursday

j.am's picture

Well, let's move it to another thursday starting in march then...will discuss this at the meeting probably, but perhaps it's better for people to chime in online since it is not likely everyone will be at the meeting. Second thursday of the month is better for me than the fourth thursday, which is often impossible.

While we're at it...

ezeedub's picture

As far as I'm concerned the day of the week is also open. Weigh in if you have a preference. (I don't really)

Thursdays are good

evenings that work for me

j.am's picture

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday (except possibly 3rd and 4th of month). Tuesday is never good and Thursdays, as noted, can be no good. But just to clarify, this Thurday today, Feb 17, is good and I will be there.

Down the road...

ezeedub's picture

When we talk about this again... I think I might like Mondays.

never ever on a Monday, a Monday

ajsoles's picture

Sorry, but our filmclub (we do have one in Chemainus and I look after it) is on Monday nights.
Thursdays (except 3rd Thursdays are my best date).
