Should phpmyadmin be enabled on Pantheon?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I've got a successful Pantheon 1.2 install on Linode. Thanks guys! It looks great!

This is a question for the developers. Obviously, setting up users, privileges, and databases from the mysql prompt can be quite tedious. phpmyadmin is the obvious GUI solution, but:

1) How resource intensive is it? Does it take away from Pantheon resources?

2) Will it play well with Varnish?

My suggestion would be to setup phpmyadmin on a it's own port, bind that port to localhost and then ssh to the server (binding the remote port to your local port similar to what we do with Hudson on Pantheon 1.2 - see: https://getpantheon.com/support/accessing-and-using-hudson-pantheon-server). This is a more secure option than using a login/pass on phpmyadmin plus it bypasses varnish.

Hope this helps,

Greg

Great idea!

Since I use PuTTy, tunneling is transparent and that would restrict phpmyadmin to authorized personnel. Much better than leaving it open for all to see.

So is phpmyadmin resource efficient? With a 512mb Linode, every bit counts. :-)

Thanks again for all your hard work. I can see a lot of the thought and configuration that went into Pantheon. This should not only give us noobs a fast platform for Drupal, but you've also configured much of the security too.

PHPmyadmin only works when you use it

PHPmyadmin has some limitations — e.g. you might have some issues dumping very large databases — but it is "resource efficient" in that it only introduces overhead/load when you use it. If you're not clicking around in its UI, it's not going to drain resources from the rest of your server.

Thanks!!

That's exactly the answer I hoped for...

Basic Varnish logic

Unless Pantheon has changed the most basic caching logic of Varnish, as long as a cookie is set you should not see any issues with running phpmyadmin behind a Varnish.

phpMyAdmin does not require any resources, other than diskspace when it's not being actively used, so you should see little / no change on that part.

FYI

By popular demand, we are rolling PHPMyAdmin into the latest control panel on getpantheon.com.
