Drupal sandbox for Linode StackScript

The group doesn't lend itself well to supporting the StackScript, and I needed to use VCS to keep track of changes to the script. I was going to use Github, but their issue tracker sucks. I won't actually be releasing any files, so I didn't want to create a full-blown project, so I setup a sandbox project to host the source code for the script and to track issues with it:

http://drupal.org/sandbox/justintime/1176768

I do have permissions to create new projects on d.o, so if enough people say they want http://drupal.org/project/mercury_stackscript, I'll promote it to a full project.

Linode StackScript for Ubuntu 10.04 and Mercury 1.1 available

I just posted an update to the Linode StackScript for Mercury. Instead of biting off the huge chunk of jumping from 1.0 in Karmic to 1.2 on Lucid, I decided a "baby step" was in order. The StackScript now will install Mercury 1.1 on Ubuntu 10.04. I've tested a few times on my own personal Linode, and it works fine there, but I haven't tested all configurations -- please report back with any successes and/or failures.

Scaling Plan for Novice

I've tried to go through the groups and forums to glean as much information as I could prior to posting this. I fall into the category of someone who is fairly familiar with drupal and mildly familiar with server setups. There is a wealth information on Performance and tuning, but it leaves the novice without a clear path of how to scale. I though I would post my setup here along with my confusion, in hopes that it will help other individuals in the same boat.

My Current Setup
I currently have 400K nodes and 100 users
I hope to be able to scale to 100k + users 5M Nodes

How to try out Pantheon quickly and easily (on a linode slice anyway)

If you want to try out the latest pantheon on a linode server but are having trouble with its awesomely rapid development (i.e. bleeding edge) you should have better luck with my linode branch on github. I plan to keep it up to date with new changes in pantheon trunk but this branch should always be in a state that installs on a fresh lucid linode server.

Read the instructions in the README but basically:

  1. Install fresh 64 bit 10.04 lucid on linode
  2. ssh in as root
  3. run instructions in README (https://github.com/boztek/mercury/tree/linode)

SO MANY PASSWORDS REQUIRED FOR PANTHEON SETUP / LETS MAKE IT SIMPLE AND CLEAR HERE

I hope that other people can join inhere to list the alternative of using a single password for everything iin PAntheon setup.

There are so many places passwords are required, and I am not sure which locations require the same password which you have created before, and which require a unique password, and which passwords are setting permissions for which functions. I would be so happy if someone could clear this up.

Ubuntu 10.04 Step-by-Step for Multi-Drupal Instances Same Server (not Multi-site)

Notes:

As of 10.9.2010, Does not work. For some reason will get a WSOD if cron runs twice in a row without the site being hit.
As of 10.8.2010: (later in the day!) Seems to be working, get a white screen of death, run update.php from the browser

As of 10.8.2010: I am sure this document will need to change, but this is where I am at currently with this install.

My Goal is to have two or more Drupal Installs with Pantheon, on Ubuntu 10.04.

I want my document root to be /var/www/www.example.com/htdocs/

Tomcat tweak for ApacheSolr powered search on non English words

Search on Mercury provided by ApacheSolr and hosted in tomcat. Tomcat is running on port 80. When a request contains UTF-8 characters there are percent encoding and Tomcat can't deal with it by default. See : http://wiki.apache.org/solr/SolrTomcat#URI_Charset_Config

Quote :

If you are going to query Solr using international characters (>127) using HTTP-GET, you must configure Tomcat to conform to the URI standard by accepting percent-encoded UTF-8.

Edit Tomcat's conf/server.xml and add the following attribute to the correct Connector element: URIEncoding="UTF-8".

Rackspace Setup on Lucid

I followed the step-by-step instructions greg so kindly posted, and added a few annotations where the install seemed to take a really long time without progress reports from Linux.

This was a plain Rackspace instantiation on Lucid Lynx.

Greg, thanks for the great job!

Couple of questions:

  1. I seemed to need to run this command twice: sudo bcfg2 -vqed. It just hangs after the first install, it seems. Have others reported that?
  2. I needed to manually set up the mySQL database. Perhaps related to #1 above, perhaps not.
