Each year a beginners track at different Drupal Camps is often a mash of different topics leaving enormous gaps in knowledge for the beginning drupalists. This year Florida Drupal Camp plans to fix this issue by setting a standard – having a ‘case study’ for the entire track and each session builds on the previous session. Each session will follow stringent rules and guides; to circumvent our members from becoming lost between sessions from reasons such as “I didn’t get that one part” or “I had an issue” each presenter will follow a guide and be given goals to accomplish in that session. A link will be provided at the end of each session for a database dump of the site. This will provide a fallback option in case a member of the audience falls behind and wishes to keep pace – they can download the current session database dump and upload it to their practice site to keep on track with the presenter.

Case Study: This year FLDC 2011 will provide users with a case study to complete a fully functioning site. This year’s case study we will be creating the “Central Florida Computer Users Society” Site. You will create custom content types, custom taxonomy vocabularies and views to display those features.

Presenters will be provided a list of Goals and what they must cover for each session to keep pace with every other session.

Thanks

Q&A Panel Anyone?

gadams's picture

We've got almost everything covered.

Anyone interested in doing the Q&A Panel?

@bhosmer Extending is also being taugh by liberatr (Ryan Price) I don't think he'll mind co-presenting with you either.

I don't mind bowing out to Ryan. Unless he wants a co-presenter. It would be my first presentation, so I will volunteer for the panel.

How about this..

gadams's picture

I'll add you to both
I'm sure Ryan won't mind having someone else stand up there to help answer questions...

I'm going to claim Tags & Views for myself and my business associate Joseph.
It'll be his first time doing a real (co)presentation.

Should tags and views perhaps

bhosmer's picture

Should tags and views perhaps be covered in separate sessions?

A difficult question to answer

gadams's picture

You've asked one of those difficult questions - its a yes and no answer in this case. I say they most definitely could be separate sessions.
The session before Tags and Views covers Content Types and Fields, for me it makes logical sense to cover Taxonomy followed by Views together.

I based my decision on personal experiences from providing support in IRC, to clients, and FLDC2010; people often understand Content Types and Fields but they use a field to provide the same functionality as taxonomy.

While last year Taxonomy was mentioned in several sessions it was never covered formally and Views was a 30 minute session that turned in to a 50 minute session from its planned 30 minute. [Partly due to explaining taxonomy and complexities of views] I decided that the best flow for the beginners track after learning about Content Types and Fields would to be to follow up with Taxonomy for the first part of the session (~10mins) followed by views for the remainder of the session.

I think in future Drupal Camps views should be its own 1 hour session and taxonomy a 30 minute session; due to time constraints and a couple of experimental sessions it isn't possible this year.

That was kind of my idea.

That was kind of my idea. Views could be an entire day by itself depending on the skill level. I do agree that following taxonomy with views is a good idea. I remember views were the scariest part for me about learning drupal.
