Purposes of this group

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I'm happy to try to get this group organized. I'd love to have the Vermont Drupal users get together online and in person to help each other out, share ideas and expertise and support each other's efforts.

I see we've had some folks join in. Can we introduce ourselves? And can you offer up some ideas on how a group like this could help you do what you do with Drupal?

As a way of introduction, my name is Geoff Gevalt and I run the Young Writers Project. Our site, http://www.youngwritersproject.org, is a place for students to share writing, give and receive feedback and try out new ideas. It is also where folks submit work for potential publication in five partner daily newspapers. We also create and support Web classrooms for Vermont schools. We use Drupal in all of our sites which we are building for schools and after-school groups. All are 5.7 housed on Media Temple (dv) servers with php5.

So let us know who you are and what you are up to and how this group could help. Thanks.

Greetings from Burlington

I'm working with CCTV and other local Public TV stations, integrating their web presence with TV Scheduling and playback systems. See http://cctv.org for the newly released drupal based CCTV website.

It would be great to all get together and share a few beers and maybe code tips. I have an office in downtown Burlington that could host a dozen Drupaleros with a projector and cold beers just a short walk away.

Burlington/Charlotte

nosro's picture

I live in Burlington and work in Charlotte at the Red Barn Media Group (www.redbarnmg.com). I love Drupal, and use it whenever possible on projects. I'm interested in picking up some freelance Drupal work, and I could see this group being useful for networking and collaborating. I think a Drupalero get together at Joe's office sounds great.

Brattleboro

tracysanz's picture

I live in Brattleboro. The company I work for does a lot of work in Joomla!. I was at the Enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston last week, and got inspired to learn more about Drupal. It looks more difficult to work with, but more powerful as well.

Learning Curve

joegml's picture

Steep initial learning curve, but worth it I think. I converted a buddy of mine from Joomla and he's all Drupal now! The Drupal team has really thought through their system.

Hey if Sony (http://thinkinkless.com/node/32) and Warner Brothers ( http://drupal.org/node/162162) went with it, it can't be that bad ;-)

Central Vermont

iansears's picture

Greetings,
I am in Randolph (Montpelier area) and a long-time LAMP programmer, PhotoShopper, Flash ActionScripter. I run Windows XP on a MacBook and do alot of localhost development stuff for corporations and so on.

I too am interested in saying hey when I go up towards Burlington next. Give me a shout if you are down around this area as well.

Cheers,
iansears

More central Vermont

Howdy-

I'm in Montpelier, but would be glad to travel up to Burlington if that's where the critical mass is. Anybody want to try to organize a time to meet up?

Greetings arthur

iansears@drupal.org's picture

Just sayin' "hey". Maybe we could introduce ourselves sometime at CapitolGrounds or in Randolph at the "Depot Deli". We both share video and .flv backgrounds.

Did the April-ish "New England" get-together ever happen this spring down in Mass?

Sounds good

arthurf's picture

I'm a stones throw away from Capital Grounds, so if you're ever around, give me a shout. I'd definitely be into talking web video.

I don't think a NE gathering has been put together yet- I was interested in doing it, but got swamped by work this spring.

Montpeculiar would be good

joegml's picture

Contrary to what many think, Burlington is not the center of VT. Montpelier is closer to the center and might make a good meeting place.

Arthur, any other exciting tech events (or cool films at the Savoy) that might make a good excuse for a Montpelier get together?

Joe Golden :: www.triangul.us :: People, Ideas, Connections

Joe Golden :: www.triangul.us :: People, Ideas, Connections

Not sure....

arthurf's picture

Well the Savoy generally has some good stuff, but I'm not sure it'd be enough increase the draw. The bigger problem is that I don't really have a great space to host here- my office isn't that big, and I don't have a projector. The library does offer some decent options, and I'd be glad to inquire if this seems like the easiest place for folks to meet. I could probably host 10 with some notice (gotta clear it with my office mates) if somebody else has a projector.

White river Junction

SnoopaDrup's picture

I'm looking for some PHP developers with Drupal experience for the White River junction area. The project is 6-9 months in length. Please contact me if anyone is interested or knows anybody who may be. thanks!

Montpelyay sounds good

iansears's picture

And the Randolph (train station) Depot has high speed WiFi, great food, et al. There are quite a few good options in Randolph, but arther, does Positive Pi have WiFi? That'd be my pick in your neck o the woods.
iansears

It does, but maybe not the best space

arthurf's picture

Positive Pie does have wifi (though it never seems to work for me) but the space is a bit challenging because of noise and other customers. Might be a good after meeting spot though.

New to Drupal

ericag's picture

Hello! I'm in Winooski, VT and I am new to drupal. I would be interested in joining a group like this. I like to hear what others are doing with their sites. I would be willing to travel outside of Burlington to meet. Not sure how often folks are thinking of meeting... quarterly?

Burlington Meet Up?

joegml's picture

How's a Burlington Meet-Up next week sound? I'm happy to host @ my Church St. office if anyone would like to meet there. I've got a big screen and wireless.

Thursday is bad for me, but I'm otherwise openish.

Cheers.

A bit more time to schedule?

arthurf's picture

At the risk of sounding too self interested, I'm gone all next week, and only have the 14 & 15 of the following, but then would be open after the 22nd. I'd love to give people a bit of time to plan for it, maybe build a simple agenda (intros, work show case, q&a of various drupal things... ) if that sounds good to people...

Sorry to be out of the

ggevalt's picture

Sorry to be out of the loop...

Good to see so many people interested in getting together. I propose that we meet in Montpelier the week of July 28. Just to get things focused what about July 30 at 9:30 a.m. or 4:30 p.m.? The folks from Montpelier could decide the location and make sure we'd have wifi and enough room...OK?

I'd propose this agenda...as suggested by arthurf...

Intros ...
Purpose of group... what would folks like to get out of a group like this?
Showcase work (I'd propose that we all post links to our showcase work ahead of time and depending on how many people are there, we could show the group our site.)
Q&A on Drupal (I'd propose that we each pose the Q's ahead of time so folks with A's could prepare.)

THOUGHTS?

Another time...

Sorry, I cannot meet on the 30th. Looking forward to joining a future meeting.

Montpelier meetup

mpeal's picture

I've been following this thread with ever increasing interest. I like the agenda, I like the date, and I'd like to offer a meeting space. I manage the websites of New England Culinary Institute, and I can get a meeting room in NECI's administrative offices up the hill by Vermont College. Free parking, wifi, and coffee, and I'll get a box of pastries from La Brioche at considerable discount. Room capacity is about a dozen. Projector and screen are available.
Or, I'll go wherever the group decides.
~Mark P.

Sounds ideal!

arthurf's picture

This sounds great- if the time/date works for most folks, seems like this could be a good solution.

Montpelier Meet Up

30th sounds good to me. Don't think I can make the afternoon slot.

agenda ideas seem fine.

Montpelier meetup

mpeal's picture

It's been kinda quiet here lately, so I'll go out on a limb. I'm ready to host a gathering of Vermont Drupalers this Wednesday, July 30, at 9:00 am.
Wifi is available, a projector and screen are ready, and the coffee and tea never end. There's room for up to 16. Beyond that, I'll run out of chairs and baked goodies from La Brioche.
Here's where: New England Culinary Institute, 56 College St. (corner of E. State St.), Montpelier.

From I-89, take Exit 8, Montpelier.
At the second stop light (sign reads "State House / U.S. 2 West"), turn left onto Baily Avenue.
At the next stop light, turn right onto State Street.
Go past the state house and proceed to the next stop light at Main Street.
Go across Main Street onto East State Street.
Go to the top of the hill, where State Street ends at College Street.
To park, go straight across College Street into the Vermont College parking lot, or use available street parking.
NECI is in the yellow building at the corner of College and State Streets, across from the parking lot.

I'm hoping lots of folks can stop by, 'cuz there appears to be a good deal of talent percolating around here.

Flexible URLs

ericag's picture

I have a newbie question that I'm hoping someone will know the answer to.

I want to create a page that folks can use to learn more about subscribing to content and how to set up their subscription configuration to get the results they want. It would be helpful if, within this page, I could create a link to the user's subscription settings. However, I am not sure how to do this since the URL for the page I want to link to has a user account number in it. Is there some kind of "wild card" I can use that would make drupal know to substitute the user account number in the URL?

Depends on your url...

arthurf's picture

If they are just going to user/X, you a can use user/ otherwise a little snipit of php:

<?php

global $user;
print
l(t('Your Link Title'), 'user/'. $user->uid .'/edit');
?>

The destination is the second argument of the l() function. I'm not sure where you're storing the account number, or if that's different from the $user->uid, but you should be able to do the same thing with user profile data, or anything that is added to the $user object.
