Need venue for picnic or BBQ for next meetup

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi all. I would love to take a break from the conference room and host our next meetup outdoors. Specifically, I am looking for volunteers who can secure a grassy space for about 25 people or so. If we have access to a BBQ, thats terrific. If not, we'll just picnic without one.

Sean has offerred his space, but there is no grass and a small BBQ so I am just reaching out for a more comfortable alternative.

I think we can leave the laptops at home for this one and just chat about Drupal.

Maybe at Harvard?

kcaulfield's picture

Hi, I work for the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard. The building I work in on Cambridge St has a nice big grassy area behind it that could easily fit a group of about 25 along with a frisbee or whiffle ball game on the side. I would need to ask around to make sure it's OK, but it probably would be. Not sure about the BBQ, but a picnic would be really easy, and if it's intended to be BYOB, I'd have to ask about that as well...My next big question is when? I'm really swamped at the moment...but that doesn't mean it's not possible. I also have to make sure there aren't any planned events on the date chosen. There's an ever growing Harvard Drupal population as well, so it might make bringing us all out of the woodwork at the same time easier.

Let me know what you think.

My Home in Newton

ebrittwebb's picture

Thanks, Moshe, for suggesting this. Are we talking about next week?

Either way, I'd like to volunteer my backyard in Newton. Plenty of room for 50+. Combination of grass yard, flagstone patio and wooden deck (take your pick). Gas BBQ. Stereo for tunes. Easy access by car and Green B line of the T. Plenty of street parking.

I'm located half a mile from Boston College and the BC stop on the Green B line. Also 1-2 miles from Mass Pike exit 17. Address is 120 Woodchester Drive, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467.

Could someone else help organize food and drink?

This works for me (and not

This works for me (and not just because it's right next door to my alma mater). Depending on when we do this and whether I'm driving in from work (Billerica) or home (Somerville), I could even help with transportation/carpooling. The other suggested locations also work, but I think this one is easier, what with not requiring permits and whatnot.

Nathan Tufts Park

There is also that nice park in Powderhouse in Somerville. There is a LOT of grass there, both shady and not, and its about 8 minutes from the Davis Square T. Check it out from outer space:

If the Boston community wants fire, my grills are portable enough to make it around the corner.

Powderhouse

Nathan Tufts Park (Powderhouse Circle) does require a permit, especially if we're going to bring in grills. It's free but does require some lead time - if we want to do that for our August meetup, let me know and I can arrange it.

Good location, +1

A nice patch of green. I'm a fan.

So where are we leaning towards?

kcaulfield's picture

It's not quite clear from the comments where we are leaning towards (harvard, newton, powderhouse). Just wondering since if we're leaning towards harvard I would need to ask and make sure of the "rules." I would also need a date since sometimes our courtyard area is reserved.

Cheers,
Kristin

Meetup at Powderhouse

moshe weitzman's picture

Lets meet at Nathan Tufts Part at Powderhouse Circle. I like it because we can meet there whenever we want without coordinating with a host. Lets do a 'bring your own food/drink' picnic. If people want to bring food for sharing thats cool but I'm inclined to skip the full potluck thing.

So, I propose next week. See proposed dates below. Please state if you have a strong preference.

  • Monday July 28 - 5:30pm
  • Tuesday July 29 - 5:30pm
  • Thursday July 31 - 5:30pm

I doubt we need a permit since we are skipping the grills. But perhaps Mike can research a little if desired.

Hard dates

I was hoping this meeting wouldn't fall on that week, I am out of town. Bummer, because its right in my neighborhood. FWIW, I'll suggest the following Tuesday, Aug 5.

Perfer Monday July 28

I prefer Monday July 28, but could probably make Tuesday or Wednesday as well.

No permit necessary...

With no grilling going on, we'll be fine.

Monday or Tuesday

pukku's picture

Hi! I would prefer Monday, or possibly Tuesday...

Alright - lets do Monday

Alright - lets do Monday July 28 at 5:30pm. Bring your own food and drink. I guess some of us will leave the park in search of alcohol after the meetup. All are welcome to attend that too.

Tips on transportation & takeout

mikeryan's picture

Davis to Powderhouse

By T, take the Red Line to Davis Square and exit on the College Avenue side. You can go right out of the station to go up College Ave to the park. The one good take-out place directly on your way is Deli-icious (across the street, on the next block) for sandwiches. The Chinese place two doors down is not recommended - better to turn left and go on Elm Street to Dragon Garden. Also on Elm Street you'll find Diva and its less-well-known (but even better) competitor Namaskar for Indian food, burritos at Chipotle, Anna's, and Boloco, and a slight diversion to Chester Street brings you to Redbones (best barbecue in the Boston area).

By car - you're on your own... There's not much in terms of non-resident parking in the area, you might need to use one of the Davis Square city lots. Look on Grove Street off of Elm.

metered parking on Broadway and free parking on Willow

sooz's picture

There's metered parking on Broadway (one of the streets that the park is on) and there's free parking on Willow a few blocks over (intersects with Broadway). You don't need a resident sticker or guess past on Willow.

i'll be there!
