User group meeting

The 8th meetup for the Tampa Bay Drupal users group is next Thursday, April 7th @ 6pm.

For this next meetup, we had planned on having a presentation on the Views module, which was to be given by myself. A week or so ago ultimike put out a call for the local Florida Drupal groups to help wrap up the "Coding for a Cause" event that was started at the last FL DrupalCamp. Some of the Tampa group members decided we'd like to help with that, so we've volunteered our collective resources to help out during our next meetup.

The beneficiary of the work is the Central Florida Computer Society (CFCS). Their new site is being built on Drupal 7. So this will be a good chance for a us to get our hands dirty with some practical Drupal 7 theming/coding. We'll be able to see some active development, as well as ask and answer questions along the way. So it will hopefully provide a good learning experience for everyone.

The different groups throughout the region have been assigned specific areas of the website to wrap up. The Tampa group has been assigned the "Newsletters" section of the site. Newsletters are a custom content type that appear to be:

  • Title - Title including volume #
  • Body - summarizes the newsletter
  • Image - appears to just be the newsletter logo, not sure yet if this can be custom for each issue
  • Issue Date - when the issue ran
  • PDF Attachment - the actual newsletter

These content types have the following displays, which we will be responsible for laying out/styling:

  • List page
    • This displays the latest issue along with a summarized list of available back issues
  • Detail page
    • A detailed view of a selected newsletter

I have access to the SVN repository where the code is kept, and am working on getting access to the development website.

It would be great if folks want to chime in and let us know if they think they'll be able to make it, so we know how best to divide up the work and can maybe do a little pre-planning.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM, at the usual location — Panera on Ulmerton Road:
2285 Ulmerton Rd.
Clearwater, FL 3376
Google Maps Link

There is a $50 charge to use their meeting room, but any food purchases are deducted from this cost, so come hungry (for food as well as Drupal knowledge)!

Look forward to seeing everyone there.

Oh and some of the project leads (at least one) will be on #drupal-florida on IRC during our meetup to help answer questions. I've taken to just hanging out in that room as well, feel free to stop by and say hey. I'm "gnark" in there.

From my post on TBDUG...

I don't think we have to overthink this too much.

Based on your notes in the post, I think that a simple Views (hey, you can demonstrate it after all!) setup for the list page and then perhaps a node template for the specific newsletter nodes to let us style more freely might be all that is needed.

As a group I think that we can collectively come up with a basic layout (maybe on Mike's projector via something like Balsamiq? ) and then break off into groups to help teach/offer feedback to each other. Obviously there will only need to be one or two actual people doing commits to the site at a time but I think that if we break it out and let people attending choose where they want to help out, that would make things easier. We may just have to play it by ear though to see how many people show up.

I just want to make sure no one feels left out, or like they're not getting anything out of the meeting. But I agree with everything you stated :)
