We tried this once in Southern California

christefano's picture

We tried this once in Southern California (when there was a group of the same name) and ended up doing away with the group because almost no one was using it. It was intended to be an "umbrella group" for all activity in Southern California.

The idea for Drupal California is different. This group could be used for planning and coordinating state-level camps, summits, clinics, trainings, etc. in California (and avoiding scheduling conflicts) and providing a single place for local organizers to share legal information, venue details, marketing materials and organizing strategies.

As the past manager of the

As the past manager of the southern california group, I remember it differently. before I managed the group, the southern california group was a first attempt at connecting locals. someone else started a los-angles group not long after the socal group. due to active members, los angeles quickly become the "defacto group" of southern california. drupal continued to grow and some years later other regional groups now exist: santa-barbara, organge county, high desert, inland empire and the like.

southern-california eventually was 99% pure cross posts.

In my opinion, a california group will follow the same fate as the southern california group. umbrella groups like "california" are too big to be useful/compelling to join -- and are exclusionary as a result -- two groups with a common geography. Its confusing. And if you don't truly understand the intricacies of the differences, you're likely left out of one or the other.

I feel cross posting to relevant groups accomplishes the same information sharing/discussions.

That's how I remember it, too

That's how I remember it, too. Again, I'm not proposing an "umbrella group" like what the Southern California group was. I was a manager of that group, too, and I personally did much if not most of the cross-posting. That's not what the proposed California group is about.

What the proposed group is about is:

  • A place for discussions and resources for organizers of Drupal summits that aren't specific to one city or local region
  • A way of unifying and highlighting the user groups in our state (e.g. much like #drupal-colorado has successfully done for Colorado) so that any training company*, speaker, tourist, etc. can hop from one meetup to another more easily
  • A legal resource (e.g. if and when local user groups need to deal with California law)
  • A proper place for these types of discussions so that they don't get lost in the noise or die in the silence of local groups

 * I run a company that offers Drupal training, and I'd love to know more about where our training would be of interest to groups elsewhere in California.

The California group was approved

The California group was approved today and I've closed the poll. The approval message was:

Approved on the 'legal resource' grounds, if for nothing else.

I've updated the mission statement so that it lists "legal resources" before other types of resources (emphasis added):

Drupal California is a working group for Drupal users, organizers, service providers and evangelists in the State of California. This group provides a single place for local and regional organizers to share California-specific legal resources, venue information, marketing materials and organizing strategies.

All in all, I thought this was an interesting poll. More people said they were interested in a California group than not, but not by an overwhelming margin. About a quarter of those who voted said they weren't sure.

Interested: 41%, or 11 out of 27 votes cast
Not interested: 33%, or 9 out of 27 votes cast
Maybe: 26%, or 7 out of 27 votes cast

Please note that this poll was worded in a way intended to gauge interest in the the group. The words "I'm not interested in this" has a different meaning than "I'm not in favor of this" (which could be interpreted as "I'm against this"), so if you voted "No" in this poll, please consider taking a moment to clarify whether you're just not interested in joining the group or if you're actually against the group mission for some reason.

I propose this group be deleted

There is no legal info here and after two months the group is still littered with job posts (out of state jobs even). There are no discussions, downloads, or helpful links of any kind to the resources promised.

I think since each state and country having such different laws, and each person/entity/company being responsible to know and abide by their regional laws, this group isn't as useful as it was proposed. Looking at the content - this group is just noise, and is mirroring what the SoCal group was before being deleted.

I like being helpful, too, but despite the breakdown of 27 poll votes, a state-only group seems either overboard or too little - for example, a legal group that covers info and links to both state & federal legal resources makes more sense. Plus, Groups.Drupal.org isn't supposed to be a catchall.

I'm sure if we revisit the group in two more months, even if discussions are posted in that time, the group will continue to be a catchall of job posts and events - stuff we already get in current regional group subscriptions.

What are you doing to help?

While I'm always open to hearing criticism, you should know that any criticism from you is going to be particularly easy for me to dismiss. I wish this weren't the case, but it's no secret that you and I have had interpersonal issues and I think it's very unfortunate that you'd rather launch public attacks rather than deal with your issues with me in private.

I'm sure if we revisit the group in two more months, even if discussions are posted in that time, the group will continue to be a catchall of job posts and events - stuff we already get in current regional group subscriptions.

Jobs are manually removed from the group as time permits, but the definitive solution is being discussed at #896296. If you want to help, I suggest you take a look at that issue and help move it forward. In the meantime, there's an excellent post called Incorporation vs. professional liability/E&O insurance that hasn't had any responses yet. How about directing your creative energy there?
