Save the dates!

We have two brainstorming sessions set up to collect ideas for Drupal Camp Wisconsin. We'll get started by talking about website stuff, figuring out how to choose the dates for the conference, and any other topics you want!

  • This Thursday Morning ---> 04/14/2011 Time: 9:30am - 10:30am Location: The Library Cafe and Bar - 320 N. Randall Ave, Madison (map)
  • Prefer to do your brainstorming in the evening? No problem ---> Thursday, 04/28/2011 - 5:30pm -6:30pm - location: New Union South - New Union South - Open Space on the Main level near the pizza place

Check out

to sign-up and add your ideas. If you don't have a UW Madison NetID - no problem - just drop your ideas into the comments. If you do, log in and edit away. Of course, you can add your ideas here, too.

Looking forward to it!

Going to add comments here as it seems easier for those that are outside the UW system to have a dialog.

4/14
I'm near Midvale/University and can jump on the 2 bus that gets me anywhere between me and the capitol. Would prefer something along the way to minimize travel time.

4/28
I'm free at this point and would prefer something on the west side, outside of campus.

Clint - would The Library

Date

clintthayer's picture

For which date? I assume 4/14... If so, yep!

Also... one question/suggestion... would it be better to have it a little closer to the 11:00 hour to allow for a "long lunch" meeting? It might be easier for some to attend and get the nod from management.

OK - so we're going with The

OK - so we're going with The Library for this Thursday, 4/14. I've updated the event with a map link for those that need it.

As for the time, rolling through lunch would certainly be cool, but I'm booked from 11 on Thursday. Hoping a good group can make it for coffee this first meeting, and then we'll either mix up the times, or find a regular meeting time that works for most everyone as we go forward. Hope that approach works well enough for now!

Very unlikely I can leave

Very unlikely I can leave work during the middle of the morning. I'll try, but probably won't happen. Guess I'll have to wait for the 28th.

Linda - thanks for letting us

Linda - thanks for letting us know. Yes - it is impossible to find a time that works for everyone, so the general consensus is to meet at a variety of times.

Dates for Drupal Camp Wisconsin

Gale Petersen's picture

When is Drupal Camp Wisconsin this year?

Good question! One of the

Good question! One of the things we'll be doing is trying to set a date. Got any preferences?

If there's any way it can possibly be done, could it be on a weekend? I would love to go but my husband's vacation time is already stretched thin.

Michelle

Michelle - yep - the last few

dmcw's picture

Michelle - yep - the last few years it has been on Friday and Saturday to make it possible for both weekday-only and weekend-only folks to attend.

That's what the Cities one in May is and I'm trying to figure out if I can get childcare for Friday. I was hoping for it to actually span the weekend, as in Sat/Sun, but I do realize that it can't be organized around my needs. :)

The past two years we've

xjm's picture

The past two years we've definitely had people who've only been able to make one day, either Friday or Saturday. Friday was a little busier and Saturday a bit more chill, but it seems to be a good compromise for in-town and out-of-town folks, and between the needs of community Drupalers and the UW campus. So even if child care doesn't work out for Friday, we'd love to see you Saturday!

Maybe we could also schedule some sort of informal, post-camp get-together on Sunday for folks who are available and/or still in town?

Oh, also: if the Twin Cities DrupalCamp is in May, we should probably wait until at least early June. July is usually sort of dead time on campus and harder because of the holidays. More folks are in town in August, but some people also find it kind of hectic then because it's close to the start of the academic year.

Anyone know when Chicago's DrupalCamp is this year? I imagine later rather than sooner because of the recent DrupalCon.

Cities is May 20-21: http://2011.tcdrupal.org/
Chicago is June 26-27: http://www.chicagodrupalcamp.org/
Denver is June 11-12: http://2011.drupalcampcolorado.org/

I know Denver isn't exactly close to here but it's a pretty big one that people might be willing to travel for so might be good to avoid doing it the same days at least.

I might just come Saturday, if I can make it at all. I didn't realize it was coming so soon. For some reason I was thinking the Wisconsin one was in the fall. Where is it usually held? I don't do well driving in big cities...

Chicago out of date

stevector's picture

Those are last year's dates for Chicago. As far as I know there is not a plan for the next Chicago Drupal Camp.

No, except that I'll be gone

Gale Petersen's picture

No, except that I'll be gone from Aug 27 until Sun Sept 11. Since I haven't been an active participant I don't expect my vacation plans to figure into it. Thanks for asking.

As for the date I think

acouch's picture

As for the date I think August or September would be good b/c there are no other local Camps at that time and it would give us enough time to prep.

agree

xjm's picture

It definitely sounds like May and June are going to be super busy in the Drupal community already, so we have a better chance of getting speakers and so forth later on.

August 13-15 is also bad because this is the Great Madison Day of Homelessness (campus and downtown moving day), so traffic is terrible. The last week in August is dorm move-in and similarly a nightmare.

So, what about:
Aug 6-7

There's also the last weekend or two of July, or maybe the end of September. We did the end of July in 2010, and I had sort of mixed feelings about that. During the Fall semester also has both pros and cons for campus people. September is terribly busy for UW.

Hosting and some web devel

If it's helpful I'd be glad to donate hosting for a web site for the Drupal Camp and some initial devel work.

Hmm -

steve hanson's picture

I always seem to have conflicts. I already can't go to the Twin Cities one -- and I'm also booked for Aug 6 and 7 -- Not that that should be a big consideration but in a lot of ways shoving it off to September appeals to me, especially if that might bring in some more students, etc. But that's just me.

my 2 cents

jday's picture

I think a September or even October date for drupalcampWI would provide decent breathing space between regional events. And for meet-ups I like locations with easy parking.

Fall is good

michelle's picture

I like Fall, too. There's such a bunchup of them in Spring and it's right after one con and right before another. Late September / early October sounds like a good time. And the weather is usually still fine, then, for travel.

Michelle

Late August and September are out

jct's picture

Late August and the entire month of September are generally out for those of us who support faculty and students on campus (it's the craziest time of year).

This has always been the hardest part of planning. Invariably we hear from a few that the weekend we picked was a bad time. Rest assured we'll do our best and that it's nothing personal!

Aug 5-6

skygal's picture

I like the Aug 5-6 date.

Poll The Community

MkeHack's picture

I believe we need to respect the volunteers who are planning the vent and allow them to determine the amount of time needed to get the event together as well as what are reasonable dates for their schedules for the event to take place. Let the team determine and propose a couple of dates for the event and let the results of a community poll set the date. Its never easy to set a date that works for everybody. The Drupal414 group in Milwaukee is ready to pitch in so let us know how we can help.

Thanks Steve

Please disregard the time and the fact that only Saturdays are listed. We'll be holding the camp Friday/Saturday at the usual bat time (though possibly a different bat place).

Our survey data last year indicated that late July was a convenient time, but thanks for taking a moment to confirm that.

This pole doesn't include

acouch's picture

This pole doesn't include late August or September. Can you fix that?

My guess is that this is

xjm's picture

My guess is that this is deliberate (since UW is hosting the conference and those 4-6 weeks are untenable for UW staff).

xjm is correct -- those dates

jct's picture

xjm is correct -- those dates are out for those of us planning/hosting the event on campus. Sorry we can't please everybody!

You can still put those dates

acouch's picture

You can still put those dates up for discussion. Obviously given the resources UW is devoting to this those dates are not preferable but if they are preferred by everyone else then we can go from there.

this Thursday at 5:30 at Union South.

See y'all there for more DrupalCampWI planning!
