Product Configurator

I'm working on a new site that is selling complex products. There needs to be at least two levels of decision making that effect the product configuration and the final price. I have experience running a general CMS with Drupal but haven't worked with UberCart or e-Commerce modules to know what would be best for this kind of product 'configurator'. Any advice in what module to use and how to build a product configurator would be GREATLY appreciated and would surely benefit the whole community!

Thanks in advance,
Scott

tutorial

nicjasno's picture

I belive this is all good... but to me it's utterly confusing and frustrating to set up... I am expirienced with drupal, i was using ubercart before, but decided it's not what i want.

I'd like a guide how to set up commerce, or a simple tutorial. To create a product, display it (i still am not sure if i have to create every product twice - once in the inventory and then second to display it), and then set up payment methods for it, shipping methods and add taxes to those. Also, i didn't find any option to have an invoice that i could print out.

I'm also in the EU, which means that we have only VAT, no sales tax and that VAT should ideally be applied pretty complicated:

Items without VAT
Items with VAT
Shipping without VAT
Shipping with VAT
Total VAT
Total shipping+items with VAT

That's what accountants here want. :(

Please help.

Workflow-ng

Have you tried or looked at workflow-ng? I have a similarly complex project that I plan to use Ubercart on - am just a beginner - and that module looked like a good candidate for that part of the puzzle.

Load Drupal 7 and commerce

MarketStone's picture

Time goes by so fast, if You can load drupal 7 and the http://drupal.org/project/commerce module not UberCart or e-Commerce modules do so. The commerce module hooks into the core so You have all the functions of content types (CCK), views, rules, triggers, and actions. There will be a steeper learning curve but absolutely worth it. watch these videos.

http://www.commerceguys.com/resources/articles/Drupal-Commerce-warmly-we...

http://vimeo.com/14406353

and yes You have to set up everything from scratch. make a contact type for Your products and every item is a content type, "blue shirt small" and "blue shirt large" where in UberCart You would use attributes for sm mid lg. This is much better because You can make a view now of Your accounting (invoices, POS, inventory) So nicjasno no You do not create every item twice You make a content type then use views to view it.

here is the main web site http://www.drupalcommerce.org/

There are 2 profiles made at http://www.drupalcommerce.org/development/installation-profiles

download them from git hub. Before You set up drupal on the server put the profile in the the drupal 7 core profile folder and preload the modules in sites/all/module needed. Then when You install drupal on the server You will have a "Commerce Dev" selection. This sets up some views and products so You can see how it works. and if i remember i think there is a line item for VAT made for one of the product very easy to do with drupal commerce or any type of tax.

i really like what Your doing at http://microstrain.com/ ! This is the next big Net Wave that's coming connecting real world devices to the Net. We are working on answering Your door bell from Your black berry.

Very helpful, thx

You're the second Drupal Pro that's pointed me towards the newer Commerce cart. I guess one of the main developers of Ubercart is a main contributor to the Commerce project also.

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to follow through with it, and no real need for a blackberry driven doorbell answering system at this time :)

mmmhhh Drupal Commerce ... I hit my head to it for at least two months.
I watched all videos, and tested all the versions. Deeply assessed all the presentations ...
It's a very evolved approach and project, but I have to say that really seemed very complicate and absolutely not mature for a real production site, so far (also to set it up).
This warnings should be mentioned and underlined to someone that is approaching Drupal 7 and ecommerce actual solutions. Would be more fair as an advice.
To date, in my personal opinion, DC sounds more as a gym for developers rather then a good choice for the final user/administrator point of view (was really difficult find an easy and working workflow in inputing my products, and bear in mind I am also programming php/javascript, etc ... somehow).

So, don't forget the latter and classical (and probably not perfect) Ubercart: back to it (with Drupal 7) would be a good solution if you will feel the same with DC, as I felt so far ...
It seems to work quite fine for me.

Nevertheless, this disinterested feedback from me, hope will help/push DC become more and really usable soon.
Drupal 7 Community really needs a commerce solution both complete (more then the actual beta DC) and enthusiastic (much more the actual UC for D7) ...

I'm on the same page

itamair, I experienced the same thing. Being relatively new at Drupal I had enough to learn, and wasn't ready to implement the bare bones, unintuitive commerce module. I hacked away at it for a few weeks but didn't have the time to learn it thoroughly (which you really need to do if you want any control over your cart). Ubercart came with a much more evolved and understandable profile and I was able to get it up and running in just a few days. That said the Commerce module sounds great, I just don't have the time to really dive into it and I'm afraid of getting in deep only to realize I've taken the incorrect route.

Oh yes ...! I missed to

Oh yes ...! I missed to update my post to this thread, with my last conclusions.
Actually Ubercart for me is over!
After many months of testing, Drupal Commerce has been my final choice.
And I am very happy with it.
It might be more complicate at the beginning, but on the long way it makes you being very free and creative, in the ecommerce logic that best fits you needs.
If you want to know more about my last experience on Ubrecart Vs Drupal Commerce you might read my detailed post here:

But the whole thread is very interesting ...
