Hi, I wanted to point you guys to a demonstration of color.module I am working on.

http://www.skiquel.com/lab/drupal-6/ - You should be able to get to try it as 'user' and 'admin', and play around with the scheme functionality.

There is bugs. And bringing them to my attention helps. Some bugs may be small, others big -- either way I usually get them fixed fast. I can't fix what I don't know is broken. :) If you have any design suggestions/considerations please mention. If you have opinions or feelings, please tell how you feel as a themer.

Also, theme devs can look over the different ways color.module can be used with the examples provided. These demonstrations are using the Zen theme. So I kind of wanted to give them a shout because they helped me bring my themes back from death -- and are bring presented simultaneous with this demo. (Nista, Spooner, Splender, Simpla, Cleanstate)

Getting the code

Testers/Devs can go grab the DRUPAL-6 module at:

cvs -z6 -d:pserver:anonymous:anonymous@cvs.drupal.org:/cvs/drupal-contrib checkout -r DRUPAL-6--1 -d color contributions/modules/color_soc08

Quick setup

  1. Switch back to Garland.
  2. Backup your current /themes and /modules/color folders. Move them elsewhere temporarily.
  3. Then themes from the /examples folder to your /themes. *Make sure not to leave our your themes/engines folder from your default install*.
  4. Copy the new color.module in /color.
  5. Disable and Uninstall color.module -- now enable. This will insure the installer is hooked and that the tables are created.
  6. Then you can choose to enable/generate color schemes on a per theme basis. :)

I have never really had other people try to install this before -- there is a more user-friendly installer system for the schemes underway -- I want to make sure I can at least get testers experienced with using Drupal locally to pull it off.

Tips for themers

Use the example theme's color.inc files to understand what's going on. They are well-documented.

Edit: A few hours after I posted this and checked, there was a glitch with the demo site after it reset. It should be fixed. However if it does pop up again please say.

A quick glance

I clicked a bit around on your demo site. Encountered the following issues:
1. A clearing appears to be missing below the color picker, so it gets overlap with the listed color underneath.
2. UI issue: I had a hard time understanding where to find the edit and change of color scheme in the theme settings. Some explanatory graphics beside these settings would help a lot. Keeping in mind also beginners shall be enabled to do this.

I understand you present a lot of ways the colors are chosen depend on each other (complementary, clash, whatsoever. This is great, but one understands only when trying out. This should get explanation or examples. Maybe a more graphic designer / UI kind of person wants to team up with you to do this.

A stellar example how to do this to me is http://wufoo.com/.

To get to that level surely would need quite some work and ajax, but would boost your module enormously. For the functionality is great.

Great tools for Themers!

I love this. I don't have time today to delve deep into it, but will definitely spend some more time checking this out later.

There's really great potential for theme developers to add a lot more power to their themes with this kind of functionality. People who offer hosted services running off of install profiles should especially love this, as it will allow their customers to create way more variations on the themes that you offer.

Anyway ... just wanted to say that this looks awesome.

Looks good!

I gave the demo a spin, and must say it looks and feels very solid!

One small bug. If you have selected and click Edit in the Choose scheme block, the page just reloads. What I expected was to be sent to the edit form for the official site scheme, whichever scheme that is.

Also, it would be nice to have instant preview of the changes you make when editing a scheme. Though, I'm pretty sure that's half impossible, or you would've done it already.

Awesome work :)
