April 10 Meet-up Report

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
borrico1965's picture

The meet-up pushed through with fifteen (15) attendees, a 60% success rate.

John Michael Sales (aka neojohan) gave a detailed presentation on CSS with some recommended good practices. It was a good introduction on web-design for newbies.

Then, Daniel Honrade (aka danielhonrade) made all attendees busy writing codes (actually copy-pasting codes) during his intro to module development presentation. He also demonstrated what happens inside a drupal installation through php arrays. He explained some modules useful for developers in module development such as Devel, Coder, Drupal for Firebug, Schema, and Module Builder. He also demonstrated a new module he contributed to drupal.org, Surveys.

Time went swiftly. The meet-up ended thirty-minutes late. But no one complained. Everyone just rushed out to go to their next appointments. Too bad, no one thought of taking a group picture while everyone was still around.

All attendees were very grateful to Albert Causing (aka acausing) for hosting this meetup.

For the next meet-up, organizers wish some help in coming up with topics that would appeal to attendees. Please feel free to join by filling-up the questionnaire in the link below:

Truncated Spreadsheet URL

Sorry I missed the meeting; I would have been interested in all of the aforementioned. Just found out that you guys are alive and active. Look forward to the next one.

You might want to send out a correction on the email that was sent out. For some reason the entire url of the form did not come through and you only got "https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dEpFN2ZQODRWdHhPe."

Just so happened I was interested enough to come to the drupal group site to get it; thanks.

Form URL Correction.

tg3793's picture

Well if I knew that my message was going to come through the list like that I would have sent out a correction myself. So here is the correction. For anyone interested in filling out the form, just click here.

I give up. I'm editing this post just to add that the message above came through without the link.
1) I'm sure most of the people on this list are techy enough to figure these things out themselves.
2) If they're not, I'll leave this up to the admin here who are already familiar with the whys and the whats on this site.

I would also recommend people start showing up in #drupal-ph on Irc, it is literally a dead channel. Would love to see who is active.

recommend people start showing up in #drupal-ph

I've been on the channel since yesterday (when I found out about it) and haven't seen anyone there. ... In fact I'm on there now and no one is there.

Hi, I accidentally hit the sent button twice. Please delete my first response to your survey. Thanks.

Thank you, tg3793, for bothering yourself with the survey. I'm sorry the email notification of this discussion-post does not include the complete link to Google Docs. I do not yet know how to get around that limitation. However, another alternative (found also in the email notification) is the link following Read more at further below that would lead you to the g.d.o page itself where you can find the link also. As they say "all is well that ends well", you ended up succeeding to get to the web-form through persistence. Kudos to you!

Level of Expertise working in Drupal?

danreb's picture

How can we measure our level of expertise, there is a published graph in Dries blog - Drupal Learning Curve, maybe can help us determine our level of expertise. I don't know if there is another version of this graph today.

Sometimes it's hard to answer the survey. What is your role in a Drupal site? Me, as freelancer actually doing all the roles there. But when I am working within a team (there are instances I work within a team), my role is "Themer/Designer". I ended up selecting "Themer/Template Designer".

I am Busy Now

-- just corrected spelling, sorry --

All over the place

tg3793's picture

Hmm. Still not sure what to say I am according to the Drupal Learning Curve. I've done three in the first level and two in the second level :-)

Thank you, danreb, for

Thank you, danreb, for informing us about Dries Buytaert's Drupal Learning Curve. It hurts me to realize I am just a little over the "I suck" threshold ... hehehe 8-)
After exploring the source of Dries' blog post, I am comforted by one diagram that confirms the levels of expertise I used in the survey: Building a User Community. Thank you again.

May Meetup?

tg3793's picture

So when is this next meetup that was alluded to at the beginning of this thread? Since the last one was April 10th I wanted to make sure I don't miss the up-in-coming one.

Thank you, tg3793, for

borrico1965's picture

Thank you, tg3793, for letting us know your eagerness to join another meet-up. The meet-up for the month of May is still in the drawing boards. Suggestions, proposals, voluntary submissions of topics and activities are welcome and will be gratefully accepted. Would you know of someone who could and willing to share his or her hard-earned knowledge on Drupal 7 theming? Something basic on Drupal 7 will suffice. Thank you.

Willing to Ask

tg3793's picture

Don't know anyone directly (not in the Philippine anyhow). In my short time in the Philippines I only know a few Open Source guys associated with 8Layer.

However if you haven't already done it I could post a request for presenters at the following Facebook groups. Though I'm pretty sure you are already a part of these.

  • Philippines Drupal Users Group
  • Philippine Drupal Users Group (PHDUG)

Ok Guys, let's get it on!

danreb's picture

So here it is, I will volunteer to share another Themeing topic in upcoming DRUPAL meet-up, as requested in the last meet-up, even though we already had so many themeing topics in the past there are still several users requested a topic for Drupal themeing. So let's get it on!

Topic: Converting Static XHTML/CSS template into a Drupal 7 theme.
Level: Beginner to Intermediate

I will demonstrate how you can convert any XHTML/CSS template into a Drupal 7 Theme. Exercise file will be included so every attendee who wants to follow can follow on the process.

For Drupal peeps who are fans of some base theme distribution, I will not be using any base theme here. I will convert it using Drupal 7 core template ( original template ) only. I'm not against about using a base theme as I am also using it in some of my projects but for the purpose of this demonstration, I will show you how you can do it without basing your theme into any Drupal 7 contributed base theme distribution and by doing this, your theme is not dependent to any other theme and you will have a full control on it as a designer/themer.

Important Notes:
- I can share this topic in the next meet-up so long as it will be on the Month of June (any schedule within the month of June) as I am preparing for a certification exams by the end of this month ( May ) and I have to focus on it first. We still don't have schedule yet for the next meetup so I think this is OK.

- I think we still need some other topic for the next meetup and another volunteer knowledge sharer, so GUYS, share your knowledge here!.

- And if you want this topic, I think you can use the up/down arrow on the right of this post to vote or reject it.

Thanks and more power to PHDUG.

Danreb

Thanks for stepping up.

tg3793's picture

Thanks for stepping up Danreb. Sounds good for me; this will probably be my first Drupal meeting (when it happens). I'm assuming we should have LAMP, WAMP or some other self contained Drupal installed on our laptops? ... I've installed Drupal before but both times I've done it I've done so on a remote server.

Again thanks.

Live Streaming or Youtube?

lrosete's picture

Hello danreb. This is really great! Thanks! I would love to attend this for sure but it's just not possible for now. So I'm wondering if it's possible that this demonstration can be broadcast live or somebody can take a video and post it on youtube. For sure this will be a popular video. More power!

Recording the Presentation

tg3793's picture

If someone has a camera and a cordless mic that they could plug into a laptop, I have access to a professional online recording account at ComF5. If I come early enough we can record it directly into ComF5 (no time limit) so there is no lag in trying to upload it later. Even two hours of video would be fine.

However if for some reason I am not there or I arrive late, the activity can still be recorded via any means that would later be transferred onto a laptop. If the final video is converted to FLV I can still upload it to the ComF5 account and provide a link that can be sent out to the rest of the Drupal Users Group.

Just had this idea and thought it might things interesting.

It would also be great if we

cmcintosh's picture

It would also be great if we could get this going as a DimDim meeting, that way people who cannot be in Cebu that day could still tune in and participate. I could setup a DimDim Server for this purpose(as DimDim was bought by Salesforce and shut down).

That would be great!

lrosete's picture

Awesome! That would be great! Thanks cmcintosh and tg3793. More power to you guys!

Great, i will be there too
