Its that time of month again, where we get together and talk about Drupal. We've got better door prizes this month, so bring something with your contact details to drop into the bowl.

This month we have 2 great presentations. You'll get a behind the scenes peek at a large Drupal site, and get some advice on ways to make money with your Drupal knowledge.

Details as usual:
When: Thursday, May 19th
Time: 6:30pm - 9:30pm (Show up around 6:30pm for firm 7pm start)
Venue: ABC Centre 700 Harris Street, Ultimo ( Map | Directions )

Agenda:

  • Greetings and Welcome new people + Announcements
  • Community news
  • Presentation: Drupal Business Models by: Murray Woodman
Murray will present a brief talk on business models in Drupal, covering areas such as the GPL, scalability, risk and current approaches taken in the community. The aim is to get those working with Drupal thinking about career paths and how we might best position ourselves when allocating time and energy to software projects.

  • Case Study: Suncorp Chuong VU and David Jeyachandran
Chuong and David will present a case study about the AAMI website, which is Suncorp's largest website.

Remember to sign up. This will also help us plan numbers/audience.

Venue Details

The ABC Centre has some security issues, so it is important that people arrive early and sign in at the security desk so that we can take everyone into the building at once. Everyone just waits and chats in the lobby, so just look around for us if you're new. If you have problems you can call either of us. Many thanks go to the ABC for providing this venue.

Parking is possible at parking meters around Thomas street and Mary-Anne street. But they take a 2 hour max i think. There are carparks behind the ABC $15 (enter from Thomas street, but on the Chinatown side). Also, you can get all-evening parking at the Citigate (I think that's the name) parking station for (updated) $10 (starting after 5pm, I think, and stays open until well after midnight). It's at the end of the Thomas street dead end (Eastern/Chinatown side), which is very close to the ABC's back entrance.

Post below if you can talk about something (anything is ok, everyone has something to share) or if you're are interested in other topics for discussion.

GPL on themes

murrayw's picture

During my talk a question was raised as to the GPL status of files such as CSS and images in themes. I have done a little bit of research and found that the advice Matt Mullenweg got from the Software Freedom Law Center suggests that it is possible to license these files differently from the GPL. These files are separate works which do not interact with the WorPress instance. ie. not derivatives. While this doesn't necessarily represent the law in Australia it does form the basis for the approach taken in the WordPress and Drupal communities.

In conclusion, the WordPress themes supplied contain elements that are derivative of WordPress’s copyrighted code. These themes, being collections of distinct works (images, CSS files, PHP files), need not be GPL-licensed as a whole. Rather, the PHP files are subject to the requirements of the GPL while the images and CSS are not. Third-party developers of such themes may apply restrictive copyrights to these elements if they wish.
