Another exiting and wild project that a colleague has discussed with me concerns the integration of external data coming from Microstation files (in DXF format) on a openlayers type of interface.
The main purpose is to allow the user to dynamically find information related to other data. For instance imagine that you have a Microstation file with polygons representing real estate properties and you want to "fill up" those polygons with some additional and searchable data.
Does anyone had any experience with importing this kind of external data? In particular Microstation files?

Again, this is a bit outside
Again, this is a bit outside the realm of Drupal, and making Drupal do this sort of work will lead the implementation into scary code and bad performance. Take a look at GeoServer, TileMill, and, possibly MapFish, for more mapping-centered, industrial-strength solutions.
MicroStation V8i & ProjectWise V8i
I'm a newbie to the Drupal community, but a highly trained and experienced Senior Drafter using MicroStation V8i, AutoCAD 2011, and ProjectWise V8i for Facilities Engineering, which includes ArcGIS. I'm curious as to what you're asking for in your post. Are you familiar with MicroStation V8i's integration with ProjectWise V8i that has the capability of GeoSpatial Search using polygon shapes for searching map areas to access any and all data pertaining to the area chosen with the polygon shape? If you are familiar with this powerful function from Bentley, then are you asking if Drupal has some sort of same-type capability?
