I was planning on dropping in on BadCamp next weekend, and just noticed the event registration is closed. Not only that, the waiting list is closed (wtf is that about). This makes me sad, because it means there are a lot of people who could be learning something about Drupal who are going to be hanging out in San Francisco all weekend with nothing to do.
Anyone interested in going to an alternate event for that Saturday, for us slackers who did not get their act together early enough to register early? I am the owner of Trellon and would enjoy meeting up with some other Drupal people, sharing knowledge, and seeing what else a group of spontaneously organized hackers and open source enthusiasts can come up with on short notice. Happy to pay for a meeting space, provided there is enough interest, and will be bringing some of the other Trellonites to do some talks about AJAX, search engines, CRM, web services and other cool stuff.
Reply here if you want to attend, do a session, or are interested in sponsorship.

UPDATE: The purpose of this event would NOT be to compete with BadCamp for attendees, but to offer an option for people who are not going to be able to attend BadCamp because of space limitations. I have leads space at co-working locations and various businesses, and will be happy to set things up if there is enough interest. Respond to this thread if you would want to register for BADDER Camp.

How about another weekend
Does it have to be a competition?
Best idea for another weekend
I agree, you should probably shoot for another weekend. A waiting list being closed is nothing new, and I'm not sure what your background is but these types of events take a lot of work from those involved, so its only right that the organizers keep within their managed expectations. Even if the venue is free or not, there are TONS of things to consider.
Make sure you're promoting local events, local groups, and make sure you're also attending these local group meeting (large or small). Maybe you should ask if they're gonna party somewhere and if others can come join for chatter.

Hey
I am not too interested in competing with BadCamp, but offering an option for people who are not going to get in to the main event. I mean, if there is more demand than there is space, why does that mean people cannot be getting together to talk about Drupal somewhere else? Doing this another weekend would kind of defeat the purpose.
It's not too hard to find space at a coworking facility for people to socialize and conduct sessions. I have been involved in organizing DC area Drupal meetups for years, and generally the costs are not too prohibitive.

That's a cool idea
An overflow event could be a great idea.
The reason BADCamp reg and the waiting list are closed is just that we have more people signed up already than there are places to sit in the building. We are going with the airplane model this year, and have signed up more people that will fit, based on our registration vs attendance numbers from last year. If everyone who has registered this year actually shows, it will get a little crowded.
But I am sure in the next 10 days we are going to get a couple of dozen folks who would like to come, and pointing them at your thing is a lot cooler that having to tell them no.
Let's point people at this list
Let's point people at this thread and use it as a starting point. If we can get together a list of at least 30 people and enough sessions where it would be useful, I am up for doing it.
I was unable to get to Sezged this year, but have a presentation ready about extending Drupal's search features with the Xapian search engine. I also have a presentation I did at a recent Drupal area meetup and building AJAX forms with Drupal that people may find instructive. I will see what the rest of the Trellon guys have to say about it.

update your original post
I'd recommend updating the top of your original post to have the update/status so people don't have to scroll down to see things are moving on this.

Good idea, and done.

You might want to cross post to groups.drupal.org/berkeley
Alsa, but no...
Normally I would suggest our place (PariSoMa) to host this kind of thing, and even make some sort of arrangement since I was planning on going to BADCamp - but alas, it's my wedding anniversary weekend, so I will be missing both. :-(

I'd suggest creating a
I'd suggest creating a planning wiki plus an event post (similar to: http://groups.drupal.org/node/12528).
I think you'll need both. but it'll be an easy way to organize.
we took down the tracks from our wiki after we moved them to our "camp website" in order to reduce confusion ... but a wiki has everything you need in order to get a bunch of people to organize it without much effort.
if you go this route, you might want to make sure this thread has a link to the planning wiki.

Sure
Sure, more than willing to. Let's see some people express some interest first, I would feel awkward sitting around a meeting room talking to myself about Drupal all day.
Anyone who wants to attend a BADDER Camp, respond to this post first. Or send me a message if you are interested in helping to organize.

Hoping to be in SF next weekend
Have missed out on BADcamp, still don't know if I'll be in SF next weekend - I have to head down there for client training at some point in the next few of weeks and was hoping to tie it in, but never bothered to register :-(. Anyway, will find out on Monday if it will be next weekend that I head down and if so, would love to attend BADDER Camp, could present a talk too.
