I try Baracuda and Octopus because I have trouble installing drupal 7 at the current version of aegir (1.2)
What does octopus solve to make it work? Should this not also be possible without it?

Sounds more like a OS issue
Sounds more like a OS issue than to do with Aegir / B or O. Check to make sure your system meets the requirements for d7, this includes php. What errors are you seeing when trying to install drupal 7 on Aegir?
Drupal 6 is working fine, so
Drupal 6 is working fine, so I dont think php is the issue. The problem is that where drupal 7 offers 3 profiles, it only shows the testing profile.
Aegir works fine, but i can't get it to install proper drupal 7 profiles
Uncheck the setting to hide
Uncheck the setting to hide platforms with non-default profiles. There's an issue in the queue about this, btw.
Octopus doesn't do anything
Octopus doesn't do anything special, it is using the "Hide platforms with non-default profiles" option in Aegir to make the Create Site form less confusing, plus it removes Testing profile and renames 'Standard' and 'Minimal' to 'Drupal 7 Standard' and 'Drupal 7 Minimal' to avoid confusion because of too generic names used by D7 profiles. Note that when the "Hide platforms with non-default profiles" option in Aegir is enabled, Aegir will work fine only when there are max two (2) install profiles per platform - and this is why we are removing the Testing install profile, or even all D7 profiles for distros like OpenPublic or CiviCRM 4.
