IRC chat log from August 29th planning meeting
Here is our log from today's IRC meeting.
Jason
<indigital> Hi, sorry, first time in an IRC chat<tlattimore> indigital: Wow. Chose drupal-nc as first irc chat. I'm honored.
<CGMonroe> Better than a full blown IRC channel with 5-10 conversations mixed up...lol
<timswezy> My first use of IRC was also for a TriDUG planning meeting on drupal-nc many weeks ago now
<tlattimore> CGMonroe: Yeah. I'm pretty sure my first irc chat was #drupal or #drupal-support. Not the best intro probably.
<indigital> Yeah,I'm new to Drupal and since I've been merely reading books and tinkering around I haven't run into an issue that needed immediate assistance to warrant an emergency IRC sign-in I guess, but I just joined TriDug maybe 2 weeks ago now
<CGMonroe> Support via IRC can be good... but IMHO it's not great because there is no permanent trail
--> SteveCory (SteveCory@p0076.cscc.unc.edu) has joined #drupal-nc
<CGMonroe> E.g. Problem gets solved for individual... but unlike groups.d.o postings... there is no record
<shibby> hi
<Druplicon> what's up
<shibby> sorry I'm late
<CGMonroe> 'lo
<shibby> my last meeting ran over
<-- Purdy has quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
<indigital> Well, as an aspiring designer I am really interested in theming (from scratch) and I found the book, "The Definitive Guide to Drupal 7" to be really good
<shibby> CGMonroe: is allen around?
--> Purdy (~Purdy@rrcs-24-106-186-250.se.biz.rr.com) has joined #drupal-nc
<CGMonroe> Haven't seen him
<indigital> Though as I explained in my Amazon review My only issue with the books theming chapters is that it doesn't have a dedicated section that concludes its fantastic coverage of the individual theming techniques by providing an all-inclusive comparative analysis or custom site build demonstration that reveals the logic of using one theming technique over another in different areas of the site build process.
<CGMonroe> but only here for the last 10-15 min myself
<shibby> i was hoping he would be here to confirm if he could do the september preso on social media
<indigital> I've been having a conversation with myself at the books website forum
<shibby> CGMonroe: how was the last meeting?
<CGMonroe> Went pretty well..
<CGMonroe> Few glazed eyes during my presentation... but nobody fell asleep...lol
<shibby> that's great!
<SteveCory> I thought it was great
<CGMonroe> JKM also showed up which was nice
<shibby> So I think I'm eying September 14th for the next meetup
<SteveCory> He actually got into some details that were helpful
<SteveCory> RedHat is moving!!!
* CGMonroe Note to self remember to pay SC's fee
<CGMonroe> RH moving?
<CGMonroe> Re: 14th... works for me
<shibby> I've already reserved the meeting hall here at the Red Hat Centennial Campus location
<shibby> if you guys want to do it here again???
<SteveCory> Greg's presentation is loctaed at http://www.slideshare.net/cgmonroe/intro-to-drupal-module-internals
<CGMonroe> Works for me... nice venue, easy to find, gets people from State and RH there.
<shibby> Also, for everyone on the channel, we've somewhat officially begun our planning meeting :)
<shibby> CGMonroe: great
<shibby> now onto great things, like topics...what do we want to talk about?
<shibby> Originally, afreeman, who is not present, were thinking about doing a social media presentation with Drupal
<shibby> two parts
<shibby> Allen would cover the tech, which modules, etc
<shibby> and I would cover the, "now it's time to do it" part
<CGMonroe> Sounds good
<shibby> Show I'm confirming with him if he still wants to or can do that
<shibby> any ideas of back-ups....or can anyone else cover social media modules / best practices on the tech side?
<CGMonroe> If he can't I probably could fill in... we do a lot of that stuff here.
<shibby> that would work
<shibby> are you sure you want to do two meetups in a row CGMonroe ??
<CGMonroe> but normal meeting rules = he who is not here gets assigned the tasks...lol
<shibby> I'm happy to apply that!
<CGMonroe> Prefer not to... but am ok as backup
<shibby> $social-media-preso = allen;
<CGMonroe> Pretty sure if alan said he could... he will
<shibby> I will confirm with him, then let you know
<CGMonroe> k
<shibby> it's quiet here today :)
<shibby> I should have sent out a reminder
<CGMonroe> We need to figure out a good way to get folks to volunteer for presentations.
<CGMonroe> Maybe get SC to do a distro's thing...hint hint
<SteveCory> Beer?
* Druplicon drinks! and drinks more!
<CGMonroe> Hmm... free drinks afterwards for presenters... that might work
<SteveCory> I need to discuss the distro thing off-line with as many others as possible
<CGMonroe> K... no problem.. just an off the cuff thought
<shibby> we do beer afterwords,
<CGMonroe> Anyone know someone who'd do a theming related thing? Maybe a dive into theming via CSS?
<shibby> and we have no budget :)
<timswezy> give me a bit more experience w/Drupal & I'll gladly do a Drupal design/ux presentation
<CGMonroe> Kewl
<CGMonroe> BTW - Did the GREAT final version of the logo get posted somewhere?.. just curious
<shibby> CGMonroe: i think maybe we do a call for topics?
<shibby> perhaps about a week before the IRC meeting?
<shibby> use the list...say we are looking for x,y,z, can anyone present?
<CGMonroe> That sound good.
<CGMonroe> We talked about some "intro" type presentations... any ideas on these?
<timswezy> CGMonroe: haven't posted it yet, it's been crunch time here at Four Clouds, I should be able to get to it this week
<CGMonroe> No problem... just didn't want your work to get lost!
<shibby> CGMonroe: i think we wanted to do that in the fall...which is fast approaching...to try and get some of the new school kids
<shibby> maybe a good topic for October?
<timswezy> I'm interested in making sites from scratch w/o a base theme, but that could get complicated.
<CGMonroe> Yeah... but it would be nice to balance this with something deeper.
<shibby> I've always wanted to take an existing site (HTML/PHP) and move it to Drupal
<shibby> maybe a workshop idea?
<indigital> Building a site from scratch would be right up my alley as well
<timswezy> shibby: that could be cool
<CGMonroe> Hmm.. maybe do it in D7 too?
<timswezy> yes
<shibby> so maybe for the next little bit....
<shibby> October - intro to drupal
<shibby> November - convert your site
* SteveCory nods on Building in D7
<shibby> alright, we've got the next 3 meetings planned ;)
<CGMonroe> Great... only thought is to keep our "expert" members interested..
<CGMonroe> The workshop stuff might be nice because they can help...
<shibby> of course..., for november, I would hope the expert folks would actually help the newbies
<SteveCory> Is there a D7 expert in triDUG?
<shibby> and the intro...we could break-up and maybe have a dual presentations or the issues forum
<shibby> intro = october intro to drupal preso
<SteveCory> Like a mini-camp?
<CGMonroe> We did something like that when we had an OG presentation a while back.
<CGMonroe> I would assume that the Nov workshop might be a bit like a mini-camp
<shibby> CGMonroe: yes, that's what I'm thinking
<CGMonroe> kewl
<CGMonroe> Re: Oct - I'll see if I can define the intro topic down a bit
<shibby> ok, we can do that during the next IRC meeting
<CGMonroe> there are a lot of podcast, etc on this.. so we may not want to start from ground zero but give folks some "pre-reading".
<SteveCory> I'm curious if that would be from a "system specialist" or a "web developer" point of view?
<shibby> CGMonroe: agreed
<CGMonroe> Not sure.. may ask what folks are interested in
<SteveCory> (e.g. installing and setting up config files OR installing modules and updating . . . drush)
<CGMonroe> but I think web dev in this sense would be "web designer" or "sys admin"
<SteveCory> sits corrected :)
<CGMonroe> Hmm... yeah intro to Drupal System Admin vs Intro to Drupal Site Creation
<shibby> wow, great stuff today...I'll wrap up the formal IRC meeting and next meeting follow-ups. Anything else for our meeting?
<CGMonroe> K
<SteveCory> The budget?
<CGMonroe> $)
<CGMonroe> $0
<shibby> SteveCory: that's easy $0
<SteveCory> Who supplied the $ for pizza last time Jason?
<shibby> I'll get some pizza though :)
<shibby> Red Hat pays for that
<SteveCory> That's not fair :/
<SteveCory> Oh okay
<shibby> just a little way to say thx
<SteveCory> Well . . . they have $
<CGMonroe> Sigh, Duke CE's still being tight because of recession... but getting better.
<shibby> CGMonroe: you should try to get mellow mushroom to send some pizza down...we go there afterwards anyway
<SteveCory> Gad Zooks, That's a Bull City idea!
<CGMonroe> lol... but we're the people who make them stay after closing...
<CGMonroe> But can't hurt to ask
<-- tlattimore (~owner@rrcs-70-61-109-135.midsouth.biz.rr.com) has left #drupal-nc
* SteveCory nudges KyleSk
* CGMonroe Things maybe it is time to create a fiscal entity to get donations
