Resuming monthly accessibility conference calls

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

During the accessibility BoF at Drupalcon London several people showed interest in resuming the monthly conference calls that we have had in the past.

I would be happy to participate in these calls, and think we should get started. There are several initiatives that require some attention, primarily:

  1. html5 accessibility (including WAI-ARIA in Core)
  2. WYSIWYG in Core
  3. Further triage and patches for open accessibility issues
  4. ...

I'm hoping that someone will volunteer to organize these calls so that we can:

  1. Find a time that works best for the greatest number of participants.
  2. Find out if anyone interested in participating needs accommodations (someone on IRC to summarize discussion)
  3. Put together an agenda
  4. Keep the meeting on track

+1 for a monthly call. I vote for Skype calls. Skype has worked well, as long as someone is willing to use IRC and g.d.o. to summarize each meeting.

Personally, I'm ready to give more energy again. Let's do it.

Count me in as well. It looks like my situation will soon allow me to spend more time & energy on this.

Sounds good

Looking forward to the call. Should we pick a time using http://doodle.com or similar tool?

@dcmouyard great news you have more time/energy to work on this.

Proposed Dates and Times

bowersox's picture

I'd like to suggest the following dates and times for resuming monthly Skype calls:

  • Second Tuesday of each month
  • 11:00AM to 12:00PM America/Chicago time
  • We will try to limit the main agenda to one hour. We'll put a shout out for suggested topics about one week before the call.
  • We'll hold the meeting in Skype as a group voice call.
  • I'm willing to try moderating the first few, and I'll be asking others to volunteer to post notes to the g.d.o. group so that people who could not attend can still review the notes and post comments.

If we pursue this schedule, the meetings for the remainder of this calendar year would be:
* Tues. Oct. 11, 11:00AM to 12:00PM America/Chicago time
* Tues. Nov. 8, 11:00AM to 12:00PM America/Chicago time
* Tues. Dec. 13, 11:00AM to 12:00PM America/Chicago time
* And we would proceed in 2012 as work on Drupal 8 and accessibility proceeds.

Does this sound good, or does anyone have an alternative suggestion?

Works for me

I want to get more involved again. Excited to hear updates and get going with Drupal 8. Hope I can make it next Tuesday. Thanks for setting it all up.

How is that in GMT? Not sure what chicago time is.

Chicago time changes next month

Cliff's picture

Bojhan, this month that's 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. GMT.

Next month, Chicago goes off Daylight Saving Time, so November's meeting will be 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. GMT. It will stay that way until spring.

A few folks here would be interested in following along. Any thoughts on documenting conversations??

Re: documenting conversations

@tmweiss, I suggest that during the call we ask for one person to be a note-taker, and we can rotate this job each month. The note-taker would be responsible for posting a message here in the group with a summary or outline of the conversation and decisions.

Does that address your request for 'documenting conversations'? Or do you have other ideas?

Great!

Thanks for organizing this! I'm looking forward to the meetings.

I've had some success with collaborative editing tools like - http://ietherpad.com

But it seems to be down for now.

Would be good to remember to Join the Skype group (let me or Brandon know if you aren't already on it) and for folks to tweet about it before hand to try to bring out folks for the meeting.

Please add me!

Hello all,

I'm coming in after a long summer/beginning of Fall Term in which many projects were developed and launched. Still working on another, quite large module to hopefully launch in winter.

I would love to give this more time and energy again. I just cleared my Skype account not too long ago so I believe I need to be added. My Skype handle is kat3drx.

Also, if no one else wants to, I can be the note taker for this call.

Thank you, Mike and Brandon!

Even I would like to participate

Hello guys,

I received an email notification about this event. This is something that is just in right time for me. I have recently taken up to learn drupal and am willing to work on drupal based projects. There is one I'll be working on very soon.

I am part of a team of 5 visually challenged software professionals working in Pune city, India. More at http://www.niwantvision.com/techvision. We will be building a web site of our team separately soon and this is my first project in drupal. We want it to be completely accessible and I want to make it in drupal. I have been attracted towards drupal by the accessibility features it provides. To add to this, I have been searching a lot on accessibility in drupal and have been trying my hands on it on my trial sites http://www.sidnc86.com. No content out there, but I try and implement whatever I can on that site to get to know how things work (will be making it my personal site soon).

Thanks a lot guys for having this monthly event. I hope to learn a lot and we as a team also would like to contribute in whatever ways possible to implementing and improving accessibility in drupal.

Senior Software Developer at Techvision
