I just enrolled in this online class from Stanford: Introduction to Databases (http://www.db-class.org/). I don't have any idea what the quality of the lectures or class materials will be (or how helpful it may be to Drupal developers), but nothing lost in checking it out!
If anyone else enrolls and wants to study together (aka: let me benefit from your superior intellect!) just hit me up.

Database class
Trista,
I've already watched the first 4 videos, it's pretty good stuff so far. I wasn't seriously thinking about doing all the exercises & working to get the certificate, but with the slightest encouragement and someone to partner with, I'd do it. I've just been laid off, so time is ripe & improved skills would be a big help.
I'm taking the Drupal class now. I doubt that this course would be directly helpful, but you can't go wrong having a good understanding of how databases work under the covers. There is also a good Computer Programming intro course based on Java and the Eclipse IDE for those interested, also free, and the lectures are very fast-paced and entertaining. MIT has a Python course for Intro to Programming, much duller even though I love Python.
Let me know if you'd like to work together on the db class.

Would love to work together!
I think it would be really helpful for me to meet up occasionally and discuss the exercises. My email is tristanl13@gmail.com. Email me and we can discuss when/where to meet. Also, could you post a link to the computer programming class? Or is that through the Lifelong Learning Center?
Looking forward to learning more about databases together!
While database skills are not
While database skills are not essential for Drupal site-building, I consider them a core competency for librarians.
If you intend to build your own modules, database skills, along with a good understanding of how PHP accesses databases, is essential.
