Could someone please take over this group?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

I'm currently the "Manager" of this group but am trying to cut down on my group subscriptions and desire to leave the "Projects Needing Financing" group. When I go to "My Membership" for this group, it states: "You may not leave this group because you are its owner. A site administrator can assign ownership to another user and then you may leave."

So, anyone interested in taking over the group? Please let me know by posting a reply here.

Thank you!
Walt

What's involved in maintaining this group?

dahacouk's picture

Can you give any details?

It doesn't look like there's much traffic. Is that so?

Cheers Daniel

...but I'm trying to cut down on the number of g.d.o groups I belong to and am pruning here and there.

This group has been pretty much dormant for some time. I had high hopes for it but...sigh. With open source, as I'm sure you know, it's anybody's guess as to what works best and when you throw that pasta on the wall to see if it's done, sometimes it sticks and...sometimes it doesn't. ;)

So, want to take over? :)

Chipin or pledge on a project by project basis?...

dahacouk's picture

Take the issue Version of invite for Drupal 6. It's pretty common that people want the modules they use upgraded. Look at all those interested folk. I bet they'd all chip in a few dollars, wouldn't they? I don't see anything wrong with making it easy for people to provide a little incentive to someone who can work on making their dreams come true.

I'd like to see a little pledge form that we could use to build up a fund to pay a developer to work on an issue. I'm not sure exactly how it would work but I'd be happy to work with other developers to make this happen. I am not a developer nor a maintainer of d.o nor g.d.o. I'm just a happy user.

I've said something similar before. Surely, this is good for the Drupal community to implement something like this. Why is there no impetus to build this? I would have thought it was a no brainer? What am I missing? Competition? Would developers expect to get paid? Let me know...

Cheers Daniel

...here on this group a bit more frequently, I think it could really have some potential.

I think part of the key is to publicize this group somehow so that developers AND end users who have a need for a specific piece of "code" can work together to further:
- Drupal core
- Drupal contributed modules
- and other Drupal-related projects.

The part that's missing, IMO, is a "marketplace" type of atmosphere where developers AND end users can easily meet. Perhaps you can come up with a better solution or develop some suggestions and take over the group? Alas, there is no beer money in taking this volunteer position but the self-satisfaction you'll experience is...uh...infinite. :)

Probably just not a prioirity

gusaus's picture

As with a lot of innovation, this would probably be best started outside of d.o. - if the community sees the value, then they could implement. Related to this specific issue, I've been following up with Abdullah about both utilizing and integrating his system for collective funding and it would be great to have others involved.

Why not a priority?...

dahacouk's picture

Are developers not interested in getting more paid work? Are users not interested in getting their modules upgraded? Is the Drupal community, as a whole, not interested in increasing the rate of module development/improvement? The answer to all of those is a resounding "no". So, why not?

It's got to be inside d.o. for me to work on it...

dahacouk's picture

I think Abdullah's FOSS Factory is a great idea. I met him at DrupalCon Szeged. We chatted together and with Kieran Lal. I'm not sure what came of those discussions...

However, doing this "outside of d.o." with the desire/intention that it was really inside d.o. is the wrong way (for me) to go about it in my opinion (and with my resources). It would be a lot of hard work and sucking up to a lot of people. If I was to put my time and energy into this I'd want to know that people were behind the idea and that people wanted to use it.

Bear in mind that FOSS Factory works now regardless of being inside or outside of d.o. But it would work much better inside of d.o. I feel that FOSS Factory is too complex for what is needed.

This thing needs to be real easy. It needs to be integrated within d.o. from the start. So, I'm starting to think of how we could do this on a very simple level. Just using text in the comments? Like "I pledge 10 USD for this update". Could a robot/crawler find these and then post the total results as a comment? At least this way it all happens on d.o. and people start to get used to the idea. I guess the view on robots posting is pretty negative though.

It is interesting to think of ways to do this within d.o. in a way that doesn't require the admins to approve of it. And hopefully it's pretty non-intrusive and informative at the same time.

Cheers Daniel

...then I guess there isn't enough interest to keep it going and I'll simply shut it down.

If you feel this group offers any value, then please step forward and volunteer to take it over as its official "manager".

Thanks.

Also very willing to be manager or co-manager

mlncn's picture

I would be happy to officially or unofficially help with this group.

Should be known up front that I very much agree with Gus Austin and Daniel Harris on the need to make donating as natural and easy as possible (including the coordinating by users to take a proposal to developers). (Also on record at the same thread Daniel posted his ideas to.) I think this group is also the place to discuss tactics and tools to help projects get funded, as well as listing the projects themselves.

I do think (now) that we can and even should use tools outside the drupal.org family of web sites: the Drupal Association reasonably does not want to be involved in the minutia of gathering and holding money for project work and it does not yet have a 501c3 or affiliated organization to take tax-deductible donations in the U.S. Since I happen to have one I'm offering it's use for projects that meet its stated purpose of promoting democratic communication or communication in democracy, and in particular right now am trying to drum up support for funding the Decisionmaking API module, partly as a demonstration that major people-funding of Drupal work is possible. Looking for co-conspirators.

woohoo! I've been made an admin

and used panels to mess with the group layout, as well as introducing tags for any discussion or wiki post considered a project proposal (tagged as Developer proposal for contrib, Developer proposal for core, Developer proposal for other, Donor proposal for contrib, etc. for who initiated the idea). Comments and suggestions welcome!

Thanks (i take it) Walt!

Thanks for taking the initiative

gusaus's picture

Thanks for taking the initiative of keeping this valuable, yet underutilized group alive. The success of the Google and Knight programs has proven that funding in the incentive mix helps spur innovation in open source development and complimentary initiatives. Conversely there are many different examples that illustrate how difficult it is launch new programs, or even discuss funding, on the inside without a good dose of politics and red tape.

A major goal of this ongoing effort is to innovate on the outside and bring anything that sticks back to the mother ship. I look forward to interfacing with this group to work towards common solutions.
