Lawrence, KS meetup

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I wonder how I missed this group! No wonder I can never find out when the KC meetups are. Now I'll know. (Thank you, Scott.)

A colleague and I are also trying to organize a meetup in Lawrence. At this point we don't have times or locations, because we'd like to find out if anyone is interested. (Plan for 4 people or 40?)

If you are interested, respond here. I'd like to know what times work for people, e.g., if you work in Lawrence would you be able to come to a brown bag lunch? Early evening?

Thanks,
Mary (mollyavalon)

I'm interested! I live in OP. I cannot give any date advice but I think a 7pm starting time is good.

I live in Shawnee and I'd be interested but I think a location on the K10 might produce more attendance. You might be able to get some more traffic at some place like Johnny's on K10 or some where closer to OP.

Thanks

If you end up wanting to have the meetup in Overland Park - I'm starting a coworking group in downtown historic op. We'd be happy to host the event. I attend the monthly meetups at VML at the downtown KC airport and they do a really good job with the group. I am not at all enough knowledgeable to be as great hosts as they are BUT I can give you access to a great space for people to meet with high speed internet. Coffee too :)

I'm glad to see some activity in this group!

Brandon, EZ, and Andrew,

Thanks for your answers! I will be coming to the meetups at VML too, but we are thinking we could have something closer to home in addition to the KC meetups.

Okay great well I live in

Okay great well I live in Lawrence and commute to the cowork everyday, so I'm interested in joining whether you have it in Lawrence, Overland Park, or somewhere in between :)

I will attend all such

brandonratz's picture

I will attend all such meetups or even help in the organization of them whenever possible. I am a one-man-shop Drupaler and welcome all the discussion i can get! It gets lonely out there :)

I suggest a primary topic or main presentation for each event. We all have various levels of expertise but everyone has different areas of interest and/or projects they have worked on. Sharing ideas and experiences keeps the mind fresh!

great input

dgoldenbaum's picture

Hey brandonratz, thanks for the feedback on what you would like to see at the meetups. I'm helping organize the VML meetings and it's nice to know people are interested in having a primary topic. We had gotten away from that to try to encourage participation and discussion, but I think it seems people are guaranteed to get more out of it if we have at least one presentation on a specific topic.

Can Meetup If Timing Works Out

I live in Johnson County but work part-time in Lawrence. Mornings before 12PM work best for me.

Suggested meeting times for VML meet-ups

dgoldenbaum's picture

Up to now we've been doing the VML meet-ups last Tuesday of the month at 6pm. The VML offices are located just north of downtown, where i70 and i35 meet, so I was hoping it would be convenient for both the JC and Lawrence folks. We had a pretty big showing the first couple meet-ups, but the crowd is getting smaller. Is there a better time for the VML meet-ups that would make it easier for lawrence and JC folks to make it?

Thanks for re-starting these

ericdrogers's picture

Thanks for re-starting these meetups! Unfortunately a couple have conflicted with the WordPress meetups, which is a problem for those of us that work with both. In theory VML downtown should be a great location, but unfortunately it's not easily accessible via bike or transit. Any other downtown location would be great.

Actually VML also has a

Actually VML also has a location in Crossroads right in the heart of things. We could probably free up some space over there for a few meetings as well. That location would have lots of access to public transit and is very centrally located.

Tuesdays work for me - I just

mollyavalon's picture

Tuesdays work for me - I just hadn't understood the schedule. The only night I can't do it is Thursdays.

We still plan to do a Lawrence meetup, but haven't figured out a time yet. We'll most likely do it opposite the KC meetups in case people want to go to both - something like the second week of the month, on a weeknight evening.

Topic ideas (for KC meetup or Lawrence):
Views 3
drush (please oh please! I love drush but feel I'm using about 10% of its power.)
git workflow
show and tell - I would love to see how other people have constructed their sites.
Problem-solving - Bring something that you're struggling with and spend 5 or 10 minutes with the group troubleshooting/making suggestions.
Module reviews

Tuesdays are fine for me.

Tuesdays are fine for me. Though a location in Johnson County might work out better for some. We might need to put that up for a vote.

As for those topics, Molly those are good ideas and I think we have a lot of people that would be able to help with that and a lot would benefit from it.

I would also suggest a night to work on our own contrib modules, maybe break up into groups and get feedback and help from others. That would be cool.

Thanks,
Patrick

Jam Session

Patrick great idea! I think it would be really cool to have a "jelly" where people can work on making a new module or just a time to meet and work on their own projects but with a chance to collaborate / bounce off ideas / learn from each other. I'm actually trying to get started a Jelly here in Kansas City (just created a jelly wiki page yesterday actually) and think this would be a great group of people to start with. Hopefully others have interest in this.

Let me know some days/times and like I said we can use our coworking space here and get this planned! I'm excited I'm not the only one wanting to do this :)

I can honestly say I have never heard of a jelly before. I did visit your site and that is interesting.

jelly si!

mollyavalon's picture

In a recent Drupal Easy podcast they interviewed people from DropLabs, a co-working site in Los Angeles. I was deeply jealous, working as I do alone out here with the wind whistling bleakly around me. So I love the jelly idea. I go to Kansas City every Tuesday afternoon so could also go earlier in the day. Mondays, Wednesday afternoons, Thursday mornings, and Friday afternoons are also good. (Just posted this info on Facebook.)

Ditto, never heard the term. Familiar with the concept. I heard that same podcast and immediately went and checked out their site! Very Jealous as well!

Having a meetup in Lawrence

aloyr's picture

Having a meetup in Lawrence would be awesome! I work for the City of Olathe, but live in Lawrence. Olathe uses Drupal for their Internet and intranet sites... The City of Lawrence also uses Drupal, perhaps someone from there would be interested in attending too and sharing some experiences...

I'm in Lawrence

ericjgruber's picture

OK, count me in.

One more thing ...

ericjgruber's picture

If you're a developer in the Lawrence, Kansas area, there is a group of other developers using more than just Drupal that frequently gets together. Join the Google Group at https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/lawrence-ks-coders or follow us at http://www.twitter.com/lawrencecoders.

We've got people using Python/Django, Ruby/Rails, PHP/Symphony, Java ... a nice mixture. Would love to have more design-oriented people jump in, also.

A friend and I would join.

A friend and I would join. I'm a non coder Drupal designer guy...

I joined the Lawrence Coders group and plan to attend the next meeting. Thanks for posting about this.

Dec. 13 in Lawrence?

mollyavalon's picture

I am still working on starting a Lawrence meetup with the plan of it being sort of opposite the KC meeting, something like the second Tuesday of the month.

It will be in Lawrence somewhere, possibly the library, but I don't know yet for sure.

I was thinking we might not start till January, because December is so busy, BUT what about an informal planning meeting on Tuesday Dec. 13 at Mirth, 7th & New Hampshire, at, say, 7:00? (I just pulled that idea out of the air.)

Sounds good thanks for

I'll be there. Thanks for

astanley86's picture

Actually I won't be able to make it at 7. If you are still going to be there around 8 or so I'll be able to stop by then.

we'll probably still be there

mollyavalon's picture

My guess is that we'll still be there at 8.

I'll put a sign on the table to identify us. And although my photo is a couple of years old, I still look sort of like that. Plus glasses.

Are there any future meetups

katannshaw's picture

Are there any future meetups planned? I'd definitely be interested in attending. I work in Lawrence and live near Perry Lake. Thanks.
