Drupal sites exist on web servers and respond to URL-driven requests. Browsers need well-formed URLs in order to make requests. When you are simply typing text in your browser's URL input, no request has been made so your Drupal site (or any site for that matter) has no knowledge of your presence and will continue to have no knowlege of your presence until a request has been made via a URL.
This is simply the consequence of a HTTP server/client architecture.
