Volunteers wanted to help develop cool space-oriented social network

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I am currently developing a passion project, which I've recently decided will be best implemented in Drupal. The project is an online social network (like facebook etc.), however designed especially for space enthusiasts, professionals and students. The most important feature will be support for projects, goals and tasks, and various other tools to enable members to complete real space missions through global collaboration. It will also incorporate a shop, information directory, and a virtual environment to allow exploration of the Moon and Mars and experimentation with base models.

I've been involved in the space community for about 10 years, am a member of several groups and a leader in some. The Moon Society, Mars Drive and several others are very much in favour of this site being built. It's the kind of web project that can bring the different space communities together and really change the world.

So, I am looking for any volunteer Drupalers who might be interested in helping me put the site together. I especially need a good themer and/or graphic designer. I'm a strong programmer (base in Melbourne) and have developed several custom Drupal modules, although my overall Drupal knowledge is not very comprehensive. You don't need to be the world's best coder, as I can provide training in PHP/JS/AJAX/CSS etc. More important is having the right attitude, being a team player (need to be able to work with other developers in US, etc.), and have a genuine interest in space development and the goals of the project.

Obviously this is an unpaid project at this stage. The intention is to build a profitable business around the site, but I can't make promises about the future. This is something to do if you love the idea and want to change the world, not if you expect a big payout later - which is not to say that there won't be financial rewards eventually, just that I can't and don't want to promise that.

It would be great to get some UK people on the project.

I'd be glad to help out on this.

Only proviso; I'm juggling a day job and a demanding 2 year old, so I'd need to see how much time I could give you.

I'm fairly new to Drupal and PHP; my day job is Java & SQL coding, and am interested to see how you put together an entire site and give it the appropriate lashings of slickness.

great!

That's terrific, Ben, thanks! Here's my email address: shaun@starmultimedia.biz. Let's discuss this more off-list. If anyone else is interested please feel welcome to contact me off-list using this address.

Thanks,
Shaun

Sounds great

That sounds really nice and as I am also trying to build my own site based on Drupal, it will be a good learning curve for me as I am fairly new to the CMS. I am a Java developer by profession.
