Drupal 7 does not e-mail or generate one-time login link

I am having some trouble with drupal v 7.10. It does not e-mail or generate one-time login link registration not sending the email to the user's email address. I am guessing it's in the configuration someplace (that I messed up) but I can't find the area that I fix it. I do have an active email account that I entered when I ran the original installation. If anyone could point me in the direction I need to look to remedy the issue I would be very grateful.

Is there a way to check the setting for the email account someplace. I looked at the settings file but didn't seem to find anything there.

Dave,

When you create a new user account, you can check a checkbox to notify the user of a new account. Is that what you are looking for?
