Help! I think I've bitten off more than I can chew as my first Drupal site-build. I am building a Drupal commerce site for a coin & jewelry store. I am willing to pay a reasonable rate/fee to an experienced Drupal commerce site-builder to get together 2 or 3 times (as needed) to get me through some sticking points, etc.
Thank you!
Reply and I'll send anyone interested my contact info. I live on the west side of Orlando.

Have you weighed the

Have you weighed the differences of Commerce and Ubercart? I have found going with Ubercart is still a strong argument...

Thanks Brandon!

I'll Check Ubercart out. I had seen a similar comment about it before. I was hoping to go w/ the newest E-commerce option (Drupal commerce). If you & others agree that Übercart is easier and more established, I'll deffinately give it a try.

Remember, newest isn't always better. I am excited to see what comes of Commerce but its just not ready yet. And I would definitely say its not more powerful at this time. I could help you with Ubercart. I would also say, Drupal 6 + Ubercart has a lot more options. If you do NOT need those extra modules then go for Drupal 7, but only if you're sure! I just made an ecommerce site over the weekend with UC and D6...

Thanks! Being new to drupal,

Thanks! Being new to drupal, I jumped in with D7 and have gotten familiar with that. I think I will try UC3 + D7. I couldn't find any comparisons of options for D6+UC vs D7+UC. By request of my client they like the following site and asked me to somewhat emulate it... http://www.goldeneaglecoin.com/

Yeah this is a nice site. It could definitely be done with D6+UC. It is primarily theme work. Starting with Acquia Prosper theme can save a bunch of time! I don't see anything at first glance that is unique enough to require UC 2. So go for D7+UC3... I just don't want you to hit a wall where a D6 module doesn't have a D7 version. Message me if you need any help.

I'm going with D7+U3.

I'm going with D7+U3. Thanks!!!!!! I looked at the Acquia Prosper theme and the latest D7 version is a -dev release. I noticed that AT Commerce theme is for Ubercart as well as Drupal Commerce, it's an -rc1 release. I had already toyed around with AT Commerce when using D7+Commerce. Any thoughts or warnings?
mucho gracias!!

I'm only familiar with Acquia

brandonratz's picture

I'm only familiar with Acquia Prosper. It is a sub theme of Fusion (Top Notch Themes) and AT Commerce is a sub theme of Adaptive Themes. Both companies (that I know of) work with core. Top Notch Themes made the D7 default theme and Fusion is real popular along with the default Adaptive Theme. I don't think you're going wrong with either, even if they are in dev. Going with D7 you're going to run into dev/alpha versions quite a bit.

reverse course.... again

Brandon,
Thanks for your insight. I have now gone back to D7+drupal_commerce. At some point I will have to face the music and dive into drupal_commerce. Might as well do it now, instead of learning UC and THEN drupal_commerce down the road. Will buy you a drink, etc. when I hopefully run into you!!!

Don't be scared away by the -dev versions. The Drupal Community tends to err on the side of caution when assigned a release tag. Often a dev release works just fine. Since our conversation yesterday, if you decide to go back to commerce, keep posting here if you have any issues. We also are having a Brevard Meetup tomorrow night if you would like to attend. The topic is git. http://groups.drupal.org/node/194983

commerce site...

ghilsman's picture

Thanks Ben,
I've been pulling hair out trying to decide how to structure the products, their menus, and their display.... use TAXONOMY only, VIEWS only, or BOTH. After much reading & video tutorials, and looking at the site I'm trying to emulate (link below), I think I can go with TAXONOMY only because of the confusion on my part of how to incorporate VIEWS, and the relatively generic product pages on their site (all products seem to be able to fall under one Product Type (starting with the generic product_type installed with commerce_kickstart). I'm thinking to set up a hierarchical TAXONOMY like the sidebar 1st menu on the emulation site.

It seems, when I drill down in the sidebar 1st menus that no products show up on more than one branch of their hierarchy. I think I can do better, even just using TAXONOMY, by tagging products that should show up in more than one branch with more than one term (i.e., a 'gold dollar coin' could show up within the 'Bullion -> Buy Gold' branch AND the 'Coins -> Dollars' branch).

Any thoughts would be much appreciated, and sorry for the long winded comment....

I think you could use

bhosmer's picture

I think you could use taxonomy and views.

First, take a step back away from your computer and decide how to organize your products. If you weren't using commerce, how would you classify your items into families? Start from broadest to most specific.

Your product families can be your taxonomy terms. You may only need one product type for the store you are building and you can use taxonomy to classify these product types. You might need more, this is only a suggestion.

Use views then to display these product in sidebars and maybe event context so that if a customer is viewing Gold Bullion they are shown other items that are also Gold Bullion.

Take a look here. This was

Take a look here. This was invaluable to me when wanting to override my taxonomy. This plus PATH AUTO url aliases and you get total control over your taxonomy catalog. I'm not sure how much transfers to D7 but the concept is there. Good luck.

I'm interested in commerce module very much so keep tabs on your experience. And I'd be glad to chat over a drink sometime. I'm about to start a job in Gainesville using Drupal exclusively!
The ecommerce site I just finished is here... Going live soon. http://ultimatefireworks.celebratefireworks.com/
