I was talking with who will potentially be my host provider toady about aegir. I am wondering what would be the best setup to run aegir? The server will be a dedicated ubuntu 8.10 build of which I will have complete control.
I noticed in the install instructions that a debian build is required, which ubuntu is based off of so thats good right? I also can use debian if necessary. Is aegir utilizing some built in virtualization mechanisms from debian? I am just curious how aegir is creating the vertual hosts for all the subsequent sites.
Moreover I am curious about most optimal dedicated server setup for aegirs unequivocal happiness!

virtual hosts
Hi. I am (obviously) not from aegir team but I can tell you my opinions :)
I was using ubuntu for one (test) install and I didn't have any problems.
Managing virtual hosts is done by apache. In instructions there is a line that you are adding in sites configuration that says:
INCLUDE /path/to/aegir/config/vhost.d
That loads all configurations for hosts that are made from aegir. It is equal with enabling sites in apache - just go to aegir/config/vhost.d and you will see config files that are in the same form as apache config files in /etc/apache2/sites-available.

Thanks for the info! ... I
Thanks for the info! ... I did tinker around with the /vhost.d/ file ... I wasnt sure if that was the only thing responsible for configuring the virtualhosts created by Aegir or that Apache was really the main player for everything. That's good info to know! ^_^
I haven't really been able to fully test everything yet (stuck @ verify 1st platform) as I am having dns issues between vista my main host os and ubuntu server my guest os. For some reason I cant set any dns stuff from within the guest os, and have it work. Vista or vmware or something isnt allowing it! I may try some of the other virtualization if I cant get vmware to beat vista into submission so it leaves my LAMP environment alone! lol
I want to test drive aegir! I can get all the way to seeing the whole system running only I cant verify the 1st platform or add any sites. lol! Im so close though ... im sure its a dns problem, just have to keep digging I suppose!
It might have to do with the
It might have to do with the type of network setup for the guest OS. Are you using NAT or Host Interface? That might make a difference. You might need Host Interface to make the communication work properly.
However, try this first. I'm new to Aegir, haven't installed it, so not sure of the steps involved. But, setting DNS stuff in the guest os doesn't really have anything to do with the host os. You probably need to edit the c:/windows/system32/etc/drivers/hosts (? something like that) file and point what domain to the guest os IP address.
Not sure if this is on target. Hope it's helpful.
I have edited the hosts file
I have edited the hosts file in vista ... and it works when viewing through mozilla in my vista os but that does nothing for the guest os .. really im only guessing that dns is the issue ... because I cannot figure whats causing the problem with the aegir platform verification ... so i guessed that since the dns is not working proper that aegir was unhappy with that.
I started an issue over at d.o a couple of days ago ... http://drupal.org/node/387038
I have tried a bunch of network setups .. right now im trying bind9 on the guest os with no success yet.
I'm hoping to figure this out ... as I really want a smooth drupal dev environment to replace (wamp) and aegir just seems so perfect for it, its like a semi-automatic drupal cannon lol ... think im going to try out XenServer tonight. Maybe ill have better luck in their rig than vmware.
Xen VPS
I’ve been using a Xen VPS running 64-bit CentOS 5 for Drupal. Been happy with that setup (although have yet to install Aegir). I don’t see why any Linux distro wouldn’t work for Aegir… or BSD for that matter. I have one Drupal production site on Mac OS X Server, and others on Mac OS X client. Any LAMP or MAMP platform works well for Drupal (and therefore i should think for Aegir too).
Do yourself a favor and stop hitting yourself with that Klingon pain-stick called Vista.
lol!
Well .. funny thing is ... though I have had some issues vista has been quite good for me so far. I have not had 1 millionth % of troubles with it that I did with legacy windows, or linux desktops. But then again I am using a legitimate copy and on a decent box. I have been using windows desktop for many years and old habits die hard, I guess. Still, being that I work on LAMP projects & never windows server stuff, its a pain in that WAMP's have issues & poor performance that... drain my essence! ...thus my virtualization kick, of late. ... and rest assured a virtualized LAMP on vista kicks wamp or xamps ass up and down!
I think a lot of the troubles I was having were related to setting up networking properly between the host os and guest os. Networking is not my strongest point and doing it without actual wires and such threw me for a loop! lol
Edit:-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As bad as some say vista is I absolutely adore it compared to the painful to use "relic" win xp or the linux "desktop". Still that said windows totally sux for servers where linux clearly kicks ass IMO. I hate to say it cause I have a genuine admiration for linux, but as far as a peaceful do what I want desktop with ---> all the bells and whistles, windows handily spanks linux "for me" and @ a relatively cheap price. ...and today I found the missing link for my rig .. finally Apple makes something I actually like! ... Bonjour ... it solved the dns issues I was having .. so I dont have to type out the ip .. or use the "cheap comb over" of editing the vista hosts file in order to access my virtualized LAMP from my browser in vista.
Plus now I am happily runing vmware workstation which IMO is also relatively cheap compared to its awesomeness.
Knowing that there aren't too terribly many requirements for Aegier is nice ... basicaly LAMP should be all it needs save for ample hardware, that makes it easy to please! Now hopefully I can get aegir runing in my virtual appliance and experience drupal devin nirvana!
OS Wars
Now i fully understand that most people’s view of OSs are mostly a matter of religion, so at the risk of sounding like a zealot, i have to admit that i have always harbored a certain contempt for Windoze for these reasons:
The Linux desktops, because they are more or less cloning Windoze UI, suffer from #1 as well. In my opinion, nothing comes even remotely close to approaching Mac OS X in interface beauty or ease of use. It is a functional work of art; it nourishes the spirit while being practical and useful.
One almost never needs to “even think about” networking issues in Mac OS X (it just works). It’s amazingly automagic in that regard. Bonjour is only one example. To the extent you do think about networking, it is easy to do, IMO. Your comments about Vista made me think of Klingon pain sticks. But until you actually use a well engineered and well designed OS like Mac OS X on a day-to-day basis, your understanding of how good computing can be will always be an abstract concept, just as the outside world is for those folks in Plato’s Cave.
As for cost, the truth of the matter is if you were to buy a PC with the same specs as one of the Mac models, you would be likely paying as much or more than the cost of the Mac. PCs are only cheaper if you’re buying low-end, because Apple avoids that market. But where it does compete, it is very competitive. And Macs are the only PCs which can run Mac OS X, Linux and Windoze.
So do yourself a favor: put down your Klingon pain stick, and walk out of the cave! You’ll be amazed at what the world has to offer. ;-)

I just want to clarify I am
I just want to clarify I am not trying to promote one os over another, I think its a matter of personal preference .. I was just stating the simple fact that I have really not had any trouble with vista. I like to custom build my pc's part by part (cause its fun) and was sure to get high-end parts that work. I will admit that's probably why my linux desktop experience on my current box was less than is potentially possible. But I have sunk thousands of dollars in this baby and it's not time to replace it yet.
Vista has been smooth for me (after the initial launch shite, its quite stable and fast as hell "for me" especially after SP1) ... save for user error lol. From day one though its been better than XP was for me. By no means am I attempting to promote MS. In fact the only thing they make that I like is the os, which as I said before is somewhat of a comfort thing since I am used to windows, been using it since the beginning.
As far as mac ... I cannot be bothered with it. Im sure if I purchased it today it probably wouldn't work on my AMD64 quad core nvidia nforce sli box. To me it seems more closed and limiting than M$. So no, if am going to switch it will be to linux, not M$ jr. In the end I hope for the day when I can completely move over to linux .. but that day has not yet arrived "for me". I like plugging in my camera, phone and other digital toys ... and just having them work. I like being able to work on my stuff, I dont have the time to improve an os, maybe someday in the future when I am retired perhaps. As much as apparent aspects of MS the company might make me cringe .. it is still the lesser of multiple evils "for me". ..my personal time for my stuff being the paramount consideration.
In general computer desktops have a loooooooooooong way to go before I am fully impressed. We're still in the relative stone-age of pc's, it'll be fun to look back when we are much older and laugh, hell I do that already with XP! I can definitely see the progression of linux for desktops only growing stronger and eventually wining the war, as IMO it has when it comes to servers.
Besides all this when I build my new hypervisor workstation (hopefully this year!), things will be much more interoperable & flexible and the various os's I run will be for what they do best and not because I am trapped in them by some monopolizing mega-corp, or its hopeful replacements. Linux will free us all! lol
Just my 2 cents..
Open source ecosystem
Sorry, didn’t mean to imply you were promoting Windoze. Nor did i get that impression from what you wrote. My choice of titles was perhaps poor; only meant to imply such a discussion could easily become an OS War.
You are correct: Mac OS X is closed in the sense it only runs on Apple hardware. (It can be jailbroken, but that yields a sub-optimal user experience. For the true Mac OS X experience, you need Apple hardware.)
Even though Apple has a closed hardware/OS ecosystem, Mac OS X is largely open source. The GUI and other Mac technologies are not, but the underlying OS is open source Unix, as are many supporting technologies like WebKit. Apple contributes back to the open source projects from which they draw, and everyone benefits. Those of us who purchase Apple hardware are therefore helping to support a variety of open source projects, and indirectly benefiting folks like yourself who may eschew Apple products. Make no mistake about it: open source cannot flourish without commercial, for-profit benefactors. Linux has its corporate backers. Drupal and Aegir also benefit from corporate backers.
LOL! If you want to see the stone age of computing, you should have seen some of the computers i used when your age! Punch cards, paper tape, and Teletypes (which shook like washing machines when they print out more than a few characters at a time). Virtually all computers of those days (including mainframes) needed some bootstrap machine code to be loaded (in octal) via their switch registers. No ROMs in those days, and no RAMs either (we used core memory). And that was advanced technology compared to the decades which preceded!
My ideal computer is still pretty much the Knowledge Navigator. What is amazing, however, is how much of that 1987 concept video Apple has already brought to life. When Apple created it, the command line dominated, the Mac GUI was in its infancy, and M$ was still struggling to copy it. If you haven’t seen the video, you really should watch it (the full video)… and Parkbench Navigator & Future Shock too (and notice how the people interact with these machines).
I completely agree the
I completely agree the commercial arm is quintessential to the whole. I was mostly thinking of the freedom the linux based hypervisor will bring to my next workstation/server rig/monster. Once I saw the great 3d performance folks were getting in windows guests .. I was sold! Plus the hypervisor keeps things lean and I dont have to have vista going all the time; like in my current vmware workstation rig. So that's how I think linux free's me... even though its not exactly free of charge for everything in the stack.
Still I say its too bad mac is less compatible... suppose that saves them some headaches but its also lost them a ginormous piece of market share, and even a sizable chunk of their suggested target market. Guess the intel thing is a branch in a good direction .. but I pretty much prefer amd over intel unless its free. I dont mean to poopoo apple as a company (which I guess I kinda did in my earlier posts, sorry) surely they seem quite respectable IMO, their just not compatible with my preferred hardware mix.
That futureshock stuff is sweet .. it surely has been an inspiration for a lot of things over the years, no doubt. I'm kinda leaning towards big multi-touch surfaces & projections myself, been working on an interesting project in that arena for a little over a year now.
Some of my oldest memories are of my commodore 64's lol ... and I think we had a tandy somethin or other at some point too. Its amazing how fast things progress, I just hope the great republican depression doesn't stall progress for too much longer. I wanna holodeck & a teleporter & a skyship... preferably this lifetime!
Cheers to OS Peace & Harmony!
There are already too many wars going on these days...
Holographic Universe
It’ll be interesting to see how well Apple and Intel get along over the next year or so. Looks like there might be a bit of bad weather ahead because of Intel’s suit against NVIDIA. I don’t think Intel has the best corporate karma; they try to stifle competition through litigation.
C-64! I ported the Apple ][ monitor over to the C-64. Burned it onto an EPROM and plugged it into the C64’s expansion slot. Ahhh. Those were the days! I never had a TRaSh-80, though. ;-)
LOL. “Great republican depression.” What amazes me is how many people are blind to that. It seems like whenever they get in power, we have a depression, recession, war, or run up an astronomical debt.
They accuse the Democrats of “Tax and Spend”… but with them it’s just “spend, spend, spend.” At least the democrats pay for their spending! I think the two-party system never worked well and we need more viable players at the table. (Well now, talking politics is worse than OSes!)
I’m afraid you’re not going to get your holodeck unless you invent a time machine and travel to the 24th century… or take your vitamins and live really, really long! ;-)
On the other hand, what makes you think you aren’t already living in a holodeck?
Namaste
Yeah .. i dunno .. always
Yeah .. i dunno .. always liked AMD they seem more geared towards tweakers and are almost always cheaper for the same or better product. Still dont understand why apple picked intel and not AMD or both!
Indeed ... and this latest round of bloated zombie repiglicans looted the treasury on the way out! I think the only option is make a legal spectacle out of them. Those that broke laws should do time and pay public humiliation disbarment whatever we can throw @ them. Otherwise whats to stop the next round of half-wit hooligans from doing the same or worse? Mehhh! @ least we can take solace in the fact that they have little power to do much of anything other than dribble & drool. It'd be fun to watch their squirming if things weren't so urgent.
Its true we are in a holodeck of sorts .. though I was thinking of more in a star-trek sorta way, immersive media kinda thing.
As far Quantum studies all I can say is yummm, I dont think there's another subject more intriguing. What with the rabbit holes, the infinite fields of potentiality and space/time warps; whats not to love! Uhm... Yeah I'll have the red pill please .. could you super-size that?
Just finished reading Parallel visions in space and time. Pretty sweet book, eloquently connecting art & major advancements in science or rather likening them as symbiotic spores flowing from the same creative quantum leaps. Very good stuff to a crazy nut mad as I am! I'e not read that one you sent over yet illl have to check that out!
Namaste!
