Drupal training for non-tech newbies

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi, I have just signed up to this group. I am based in Davis. I am going to be managing a project of redeveloping a website within Drupal (www.tni.org). Whilst we have contracted a web collective to develop it, I am keen to learn the technical basics of Drupal myself, probably by setting up a personal website. Are there any courses people can recommend where I could learn? I found one that looked good in Santa Barbara (www.drupaltrainer.com) but it's a bit of a trek. Any pointers appreciated. When I am a bit more up to speed, I will try and make one of your meetings. thanks, Nick

I recommend buying a book or two (Pro Drupal Development, or Using Drupal are two prominent ones). Also, Acquia just made an auto-installer which will create a local environment complete with Apache, Mysql, PHP, and phpmyamin as well as an Acquia Drupal install. (Download the Acquia Stack Installer for your platform) Hard to get easier than that. :-)

'nother good drupal book

Another good book on building sites w/ drupal is Leveraging Drupal: Getting Your Site Done Right. Gives a real solid method for developing a site. Here's a link to the author's site;

And 2 thumbs up for working on a local server setup - makes trying different modules and the like out lots quicker.
