Hello everyone! I'm curious to know if there's any Drupal going on in Greenville, SC. It looks like I'll be moving there in a couple months, bringing Drupal Commerce to the SC Upstate. : )

I know there's the SE Linux Fest where Drupal has a presence just up the road in Spartanburg, but my searches aren't turning up much of anything in Greenville proper. Recent searches on the move tell me that many a nice restaurant and boutique downtown could use a Drupal site. : P

Curious to know about the tech scene in general. The Next Big Thing through Tech Stars seems promising at least: http://thenextbig.co/greenville.html

East Bound & Down...

Heya Ryan,
You're going to enjoy SC. I'v only been there twice but once was a week and a half long and I loved it!

If you're wanting to join me and the gang at S.E.L.F. you're going to need to head a little more North this year.
Southeast LinuxFest June 8-12, 2012 at the Blake Hotel, Charlotte, NC MAP
Sunday June 10th is the DrupalCamp day. Would you be available to join us!?

Now I'm off to delete the old GDO event node that I created back in June when we thought the 2012 S.E.L.F. was going to be again in Sparty. I'll create a new event post reflecting the NC change.

Thanks for the heads up, Doug. If all goes according to plan, I may be holding my newborn son/daughter at that time. Won't know how close the due date estimate is or the gender until our first ultrasound in a couple of weeks, but I know it'll be mid-June. Best not to plan on me being there. ; )

Welcome to Gville

Hi Ryan,

You'll love it here. This is a beautiful area with a vibrant and growing web community.

There are a decent number of people in Greenville that are long time drupalers but there aren't any regular events in town that I know of. I'd be happy to participate in a group though.

I work @cowork in Greenville. http://coworkgreenville.com/. You should come over and check it out some time.

The folks over at The Next Big Thing are fantastic too. We interact with them regularly.

Best of luck to you. Feel free contact me if you need any info about the area.

We'd be glad to have you. I know I've run into your work and forum posts over the years when working with Drupal and Ubercart.

It would be great to have some Drupal rockstars in town.

Cowork would be a good group to visit. I know Merge and Nullvariable have been using Drupal for some time. OrangeCoat's going on 5 years of Drupal, though we're venturing into frameworks like FuelPHP for bigger, custom projects these days. I think mcrittenden and jive01 are doing freelance with Drupal.

Holler at us when you're in town.

Thanks for the welcome. I'll

Thanks for the welcome. I'll be sure to reach out when I get there. Lookin' like the end of Feb / early March.

Had no clue Doug / Null Variable was down there. Or maybe I did and I forgot. I know him from my Ubercart development as well. : )

Welcome!

I hope you will love South Carolina, Ryan. I transplanted here over 20 years ago and would not want to live anywhere else.

And by living in the upstate, you have the added advantage of being close to the Smoky Mountains!

I look forward to seeing you around...

Thanks for the welcome, Tom. : )

Do you keep an office on Broad St. downtown, or is it just a legacy name? Would be awesome to work in walking distance to the waterfall... I'm going to have to find a nice coffee shop downtown that might afford me a stroll through the park to recharge the creative juices. : P

Maybe me, too!

Ryan,

Keep me posted on this please. I'm currently a (SFDUG) San Francisco Drupal User's Group member, but now retired and considering leaving SF, and looks like SC might be a great option. I was brought up in Florence (not the place for us ;-) ), but Anderson, Greenville are good spots because they are strong academic areas (yeah, believe it or not) and on the edge of the technology triangle. Cost of living is great. People are friendly.

If you learn anything of Drupal peeples in the area, let me know as this is a number one best place to start making connections when moving.

BTW, Columbia looks like it has a pretty strong group, but a bit far away.

Hey Carl - I'm actually

rszrama's picture

Hey Carl - I'm actually pretty excited about the Drupal possibilities here. Aside from the folks already doing Drupal here, I met up with the folks at The Iron Yard (a local startup accelerator) and see Drupal fitting nicely with the budding tech community here. Downtown Greenville is super nice, and as you mentioned real estate around the city is quite affordable. (As are insurance prices, energy and gas prices, etc.) I absolutely love it here.

I'll be heading to Cowork on Tuesday next week to see what their space is all about - The Iron Yard is located in the NEXT Innovation Center downtown and is a small part of a larger facility dedicated to other high-tech startups including biomedical and manufacturing companies. Cowork seems to be more focused on web development as far as I could tell, but I may be way off. Seems like it might be a nice meeting place for a local Drupal User Group, though. : )

And yeah - academia is pretty strong here in the upstate. My wife went to Furman and always sings its praises (helps that she was a voice major ; ), and my father-in-law just picked up a doctorate in mechanical engineering from Clemson and works for GE here in Greenville. Looking forward to getting involved in Greenville Tech and seeing what opportunities there are to mingle with computer science departments nearby. A couple of the guys in The Iron Yard came from Clemson's department.

Stop by and say hi

Hi Ryan,

I am a long time Drupaler and currently work @CoWork. I'd love to chat with you and I am interested in helping facilitate a Drupal group at the office if there is enough interest.

My desk is in the back left corner of the main room. Stop by if you get a chance tomorrow.

Best,

Ahh, glad to hear it Ronnie.

Ahh, glad to hear it Ronnie. I was actually planning on showing up tomorrow at 4:30 PM for the Labs meetup that I presume is going down there. If not, I'll at least get the chance to meet you. : )

Peter from The Iron Yard has also mentioned using their space, so it looks like we'll have a good couple of spaces to try on for size. I'll be wearing a black Commerce Guys t-shirt.

Drupal in the South

joshua.boltz's picture

Looks like this post is rather aged, but what the heck.

How's Drupal getting received in the South?
Are many companies picking it up as their go-to technology?
Is there a growing list of Drupal development shops in the area?
DrupalCon 2016 in Greenville?

I'm a php developer focused on Drupal, currently residing in Pennsylvania, but also have ties to Greenville, SC. It's been about 4 years since I've been down, but I'd love the opportunity to move back (or to travel back and forth), but needs to be the right opportunity.

What's the news over the past 2 or 3 years since this post was last touched?
Ryan, how do you like SC by now?

Drupal's alive and well in

rszrama's picture

Drupal's alive and well in the South! I actually keep running into new people using it around town, and I've had good fun at DrupalCamps in Asheville, Columbia, and Atlanta. There's a solid contingent down in Charleston and around Augusta as well - not to mention Charlotte, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Birmingham, and other cities around the Southeast. I'm definitely enjoying the connections. : )

Greenville itself has been great, too. I love living here. Downtown is vibrant, and it's easy to find other web developers. A lot of us work out of a handful of coworking spaces (CoWork, Openworks, The Iron Yard), and others from groups like the UpstatePHP meet-up work from home or for a variety of firms around the city. Lots to learn, and lots of support for anyone looking to contribute to open source, to participate in the local community, or to start a business.

Come on down!

Good to hear Ryan! Both that

joshua.boltz's picture

Good to hear Ryan! Both that SC is treating you well, and that Drupal is making its rounds.
I love the thought of co-working spaces, allows you to work remotely, but not home which could be overly distracting, but still have other people to learn from. Very cool.

What did those two punks ever contribute to the drupal community? ;)

This all being said, why are we not doing something Drupal's on here on a regular basis?

I volunteer orangecoat-ciallella to organize it all. o.O

SarahSBranham's picture

I literally just sent out an email or two to some places to see if they would host a meetup. I just moved up here from Cola about 5 months ago and couldn't find a Drupal job, so I'm desperate for some Drupal-related talks. Anyone interested?

I just checked UpstatePHP's FB, and naturally I already have a meeting that night.

You might also consider

You might also consider looking at the Charlotte Meet up group since it is not that far away.

SarahSBranham's picture

It takes about 2 hours to get to where they meet, and since I have an office job there's no way I can make it by 6:30. At least not regularly or without taking vacation leave. So it's not especially feasible for me.

Columbia and Aiken

roger.soper's picture

We have meetups the second Monday of every month and rotate between Columbia and Aiken Sc. I'm not sure if that is much better but we always enjoy having people stop by and talk Drupal.

Asheville

jaegra's picture

Asheville has a Drupal Group. That's our closest option at this point. They have a Meetup page, but I wasn't allowed to post the link. If you search on their name, I'm sure they'll pop up: ADUG - Asheville Drupal User Group. They have a meeting this Thursday but it starts at 5:30pm, so kind of hard to get there in time if you work regular hours.

Hopefully we can get a group
