Organizers:
Event type:
Training (free or commercial)

Location

As the amount of interest increased, I realised I would need to get an actual venue, which has been provided with massive thanks to Denholm Associates and Squareye, who have very kindly let us use their premises for the event.

Edinburgh, EH6 7BG

Schedule

  • 9:30am - Orientation (introduce the collection, the mentors, and the interface)
  • 10:00am - Begin training
  • 12:00pm - Break for lunch (optional)
  • 12:30pm - Back to training
  • 4:30pm - Feedback session
  • 5:00pm - Done

These times are only as a guide. You are free to get up and move around as much as you want and you won't miss a thing. Discussions between videos are highly encouraged, this is as much about sharing knowledge, ideas and thoughts about what might come up at a larger event as it is about leanring.

What you'll need - the punchlist

  • Laptop - preferably with a local webserver and a vanilla install of drupal and possibly some development tools of your preference
  • A buildamodule.com account. Send me an email address you want to use or if you have created an account already the email address you used to sign up with and I can give you access to the site for free for 1 week
  • Headphones
  • Pen and Notepad, or your own preferred note taking tool
  • Lunch and snacks. These won't be provided to keep the cost of the event to free

More details

To sign up, register your interest on this event and then you need to either send me your email address or create an account yourself at http://buildamodule.com and send me the emaill address you used to sign up with.

You will be credited with a free 8 days membership, giving you full, unencumbered access to the full video library for the week following the training. If you already have an account at Build a Module.com, this 8 days will be added to your account. Otherwise, an account will be created using the e-mail address you sent me.

What you need to participate

First and foremost, you will need a laptop and a set of comfortable earbuds or headphones. If you're easily distracted by noise, you might want a set that blocks out some sound, just in case there is a bit of discussion around you. Keep in mind that you will be watching sets of videos, and then applying what you learn throughout the day. You can also bring an iPad or tablet device to play the videos on while you follow along on your laptop.

Having a vanilla Drupal installation without any modifications ready will help you get started as quickly as possible. You can use the Acquia stack, or Bitnami in order to quickly set up a Drupal site like a desktop application (see here for a tutorial for Windows http://is.gd/ah6VpT or for Mac: http://is.gd/bskLKZ). Or, feel free to come with another stack you prefer. If you don't know what a stack is, don't worry about it, we'll help you out.

You could also check out quickstart (http://drupal.org/project/quickstart) which is an image for virtualbox (http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads) and it comes with a number of drupal development tools pre installed, including a drush script that can roll out a drupal site in minutes.

Click the sign up button, but you need to send me an email as well, with the email address you want to use on buildamodule or go there yourself and create an account, then send me a note of the account name, so I can sort out the free account access.

Good session today

the_g_bomb's picture

Thought I would feedback on todays event. A big thanks to those who came along.

I really enjoyed the session, it was good chatting through ideas and evaluating the material and talking drupal with like minded people.

IMHO, the videos were really good, I thought there was a nice balance to them. They are very well presented and clear and easy to understand, while conveying important extra information above just achieving the goals set out by the track. I think it is a really useful resource and would highly recommend giving the tracks a look over.

After discussing things it was agreed that, if it could be accomodated, we will try to hold another event possibly in Glasgow next time, before the session planned for in or around drupalcamp.

I'll keep you all posted.
