Hello,
I've been Drupaling for a little over a year now, and I've been interested in getting more involved with Drupal in terms of Meetups and community participation. There doesn't seem to be a very Vibrant Drupal community here in Albany, but I do know of a handful of people around here using it.
I don't have a location worked out, though my work is willing to let us use their conference room if we can't find something better. The one here is small and dated.
Really I'm just testing the waters to see if anyone's interested. Worst case scenario anyone interested can meet at a coffee shop, but a projector would probably be optimal. Hopefully someone here has gone to or run a Drupal meetup and would be interested enough to chime in.
Thanks,
Patrick

Interested
I'm definitely interested. I don't really have a place to offer for meeting, nor have I been to any meetups before, but I'm very interested in attending and helping out with getting a bigger Drupal community in Capital Region.
Hi Guys, I took over from
Hi Guys,
I took over from Julie for arranging meetup. It was my mistake and I apologize for not conducting meet-ups earlier. We will definitely work out some plan (time & location) soon and arrange for meetup.
What's involved with
What's involved with arranging a meetup, IE, how did you come about as the Albany Drupal Meetup coordinator? Is there something (or a community) already in place? Do you guys have a place you've been using for meetups?
I was hoping to find something neutral so no one's employers have to get jealous of eachother. I know how the Albany region's shops can be.
For the record, I wouldn't be opposed to meeting in Saratoga, but I figure having something in Albany it's self would be the most accessible to people in the area. I'm not sure if UA would let us use a lecture hall if we include a student group.
Let me know, thanks.
Definitely interested
I quit my "real" job and am now doing freelance website project management so I'd like to start where I left off with my Drupal training. Mahesh, if you arrange something I'll try to be there. We can always use the Delaware branch of the Albany Library again if people found that convenient.
Patrick, as group organizers, Mahesh and I are able to create an event and get it on the drupal.org calendar so if you're a member of this group you will receive notice (as long as you've chosen to receive alerts when someone posts events). I passed the reins over to Mahesh last year because I was a full time library director and was finding it difficult to devote enough time to my interest in Drupal. Now that that's changed, I'm hoping to get back in the swing of things! I started the group a couple of years ago because I was teaching myself Drupal 6 and realized there wasn't a local group but wanted to network with people who were developing in Drupal. We met, I think, four or five times before we stopped.

Do you guys have an old place
Do you guys have an old place and time that would work for a new generation of Drupalers that want to socialize? If it worked before, I'm sure it will work again. I'm not in a rush to go to a meetup, but I think we should try to harness any type of momentum there is. There are three people in this thread that are interested, I know of two more who would most likely come, and I'm sure if I advertise it a little bit we could get more. It would be good to share how everyone approaches their drupal projects. The drupal ecosystem is very large with a lot of different modules, base themes, and distributions, and is used for all types of purposes. I'll show you mine if you show me yours.
A saturday, preferably day time or morning, would be best for me. Hopefully we can organize something.
Thanks,
Patrick

This sounds interesting. I have been using Drupal for a few years now and usually have to travel to attend Drupal related events. I have a few ideas as to an available location. I will check them out and let you know if any will work.
Place to meet
We could meet at Union College in Schenectady. I can book a room equipped with a projector, wifi, etc. I will need to know how many people to expect in order to arrange for a room that will fit everyone comfortably.
Thanks!

Union College
Sounds great! Thanks for arranging it.

That would work for me. I'm located near there anyway so double plus points :) It sounds like we might be able to pull in 5 to 10 people.
I think we need to wait for njmahesh though? Does anyone else here want to chime in on availability? Saturdays at like 2pm seem like a reasonable time to me, but everyone's schedules are so different. If union college falls through I can host it at the mehigan bellone office in the stockade, or we can ask one of the student groups at UAlbany to receive us.
I'm in Schenectady, and I'd
I'm in Schenectady, and I'd be very interested in attending. I'm also a UAlbany student, and am fully willing to hassle some groups there, if this doesn't work out.

Would travel
I'd be ok traveling to Schenectady but can't do any Saturdays in Feb. due to a class I'm taking at NYU. I'll catch up with you all when I'm done with it.

Okay, so let's do this:
Can everyone make, tentatively, Sunday Feb 19th at 2pm at Union College?
If everyone is okay with the time and place, that would give enough time so Topazzz can book the room and we can figure out an agenda. I'm willing to be as flexible as possible to make sure everyone who wants to attend can.
Topazzz, you could probably bank on 5 people attending, but I wouldn't be surprised if we could get that number to ten between now and then. I also don't have any experience setting up Drupal meetups, so I don't know what type of response it would get when it gets "official" on the calendar. I'm sure any room Union would provide would be fine. If for any reason that doesn't work post back and we'll find another spot or time.
Weekends this month will be
Weekends this month will be tough for me, but I want to definitely get involved going forward! If anyone ever wants to meet further north, I work at SUNY Adirondack and could look into getting us a room here.
Okay, we're at least making
Okay, we're at least making progress, what about, tentatively:
Friday, Feb. 17 at like.... 6pm (topazzz would have to chime in, not sure when union would have rooms free).
Feb 17th sounds good to me.

Another warm body right here!
Sounds like a good way to spend a Friday evening.
Date?
Weekends won't work for me. Friday 2/17 seems like an option. I am away at a conference until Thursday. If we have a date by than I can make arrangements for a room when I return.

This sounds great. Let's bank on the 17th (as long as everyone thinks that's enough time in advance), and you can let us know Friday or Saturday if we need to find a different meet up spot.
JulieJohnson, do we need an agenda for the meet up? Can you offer your experience from past meet ups to help make this a great one? I've seen other Drupal meetup groups do things like "show and tell day" vs "meet and have beer day" etc.
Thanks for hooking up the Union room Topazzz. I'm a UAlbany Alumni but the Union campus is gorgeous.
Agenda
Patrick, we never had a formal agenda in the past but the Hudson Valley group seems to use them and they are thriving. Since our group hasn't met in a while and it sounds like it will be a lot of new people, I'd suggest devoting a few minutes to introductions and then maybe a show and tell of sites people are working on. Having someone volunteer in advance of the meeting to teach the group about a module or development solution they've mastered would be a nice touch. I'd try to keep the meetings to around 2-2.5 hours in total.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it on the 17th because I'll be traveling to NYC for my class but I look forward to joining you all for future meetings.

Thank you so much for your
Thank you so much for your guidance. Even if this turns out to be a total flop, I'll still stick around for at least one more meetup :)
I've been working with geofield and geocoder and have been toying around with exposing a views filter to do proximity searching using them. If anyone is interested I can go into detail about those modules. Otherwise if there are any volunteers please let me know, and I'll try to formalize some sort of agenda for us all.
Thanks everyone for your interest in meeting up, let's show tech valley where the techies are!
Here is typical agenda
Here is typical agenda followed by NYC and other meet-up's. We can follow the same or can customize according to our crowd interest. Last one I showed the demo of the site I build and other guy talked about node.js. I guess you can opt for 20 Min Talk on geofield & geocoder and I can do something similar. Let me create the event for Feb 17th at 7PM.
Agenda
LIGHTNING ROUNDS
New feature. Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.
20 Min Talks
Have a topic that needs more then 5 minutes, we have slots of 20 minute talks. The basic idea is there are broader subjects or more detailed discussions this is the type of talk you would want to signup for, please mention 20 min talk when posting your talk description and the audience you expect to speak to.
We will also have the New 2 Drupal BoF(birds of a feather). If you are new to Drupal and the talks don't apply to you some of us will take a group and talk with you about your issues.
Liking the enthusiasm for
Liking the enthusiasm for this! Sadly, I can't make it the 17th or that weekend (have a few things going on this month), so I won't be able to make this meetup. Next one for sure, though!
We're already down two, I'm
We're already down two, I'm not opposed to changing the meeting date this early on if Friday turns out to be a bad choice. Otherwise I'll do my best to make sure there is another Drupal meetup in the area in the near future after, I can't think of a better way to spend an occasional evening than sharing knowledge with other professionals. Thanks for the support mattbanks!
How about next week Feb 24th
How about next week Feb 24th then? We need at least 5 people to signup for the events.
24th works for me, as long as
24th works for me, as long as no one is opposed. The more people we can get into attendance the better.
Presentation sign up?
Hi. Just joined the group. How do we sign up to give a talk? I'd like to give the community some heads up about some rumors floating in the State about Drupal development. It would be pretty short. Probably good for a "Lightning Round".
Once we finalize the date, me
Once we finalize the date, me or Julie will create the event page where you can post about your talk.

(Maybe) 24th
I've been meaning to get involved with one of these for the past several months, but the stars just haven't aligned. Now that my schedule is finally starting to clear a (tiny) bit, I'm tentative for the 24th, but would love to get in on this!
Albany Meetup
I'm a Drupal Developer in the Albany, NY and this sounds fantastic to me. Count me in on all meetings and let me know how I can be of assistance.
Thanks.

Albany (Schenectady) meetup
I cannot make the February meeting but look forward to future Drupal meetups (I am moving to the Albany area in April). Is there a DrupalCamp - Capital District in our future? Something to shoot for. :-)

This sounds really awesome, thank you njmahesh for organizing, it is greatly appreciated!
Since 20 minute topics aren't nailed down yet, are there any requests from people who will be attending? Since it sounds like mostly new people (myself included) it's hard to gauge interests and technical levels. Thanks everybody for making this happen.

pros and cons?
For convenience, I'd choose Delaware Branch Library. But I haven't been to any of these locations and would probably choose the one with the best meeting space and parking.
Delaware/Guilderland
The Delaware branch meeting room is only available until 5:30 on Friday the 24th but it's the closest one for me so that's my preference. Guilderland Library would be my second choice, again, just for convenience of location.

Location?
If we are to meet at the Library would we have access to wifi, projector, etc?
I am flexible as far as scheduling rooms at Union College, since there aren't many classes on Friday evenings. Rooms are well equipped with projectors, wifi, smart boards and there is parking on campus.
Delaware does
Delaware branch has both wifi and a projector. Don't know about smart boards.

Guilderland Branch Library
Guilderland Branch Library has Wifi and Projects but let's have the meet-up at Union College itself. I will go ahead and create the event. Thanks topazzz for the room.
How many?
Do we have an approximate count of how many are planning on attending? I want to make sure I reserve a room that will work.
Thanks!

Meeting Room
I reserved room #128 in the Peter Irving Wold building:

Map: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hq=http:%2F%2Fmaps.google.com%2Fhelp%2Fma...

The room is on the same level as the Atrium/Starbucks - floor 1 (floor # starts at 0).
