Hey all,
I enjoyed meeting you and answering some questions the other night. I met another newbie named Sergio, and we puzzled through some "ultra-newbie" questions on our own. We also got some excellent help from more advanced users.
I thought I'd make a post here, and see if there are other people new to Drupal, and if so what kinds of questions you're running into. I'll start it off with my own story, but I'll put it in a comment, below...

Pete's background
I'm new to Drupal in the last few weeks. I've done some scripting, mainly using AppleScript, but I wouldn't call myself a "programmer." I've dabbled a tiny bit in PHP, I am fairly comfortable mucking around with MySQL (especially using a tool like PHPmyAdmin, I need a syntax guide handy to do anything on the command line.) I've installed MediaWiki a few times and am pretty comfortable administering that on a casual basis.
So far, I've installed Drupal 4.7 on my 1and1.com hosted web site, and installed the "events" and "organic groups" modules. I also installed a theme.
I would like to learn enough to set up a basic web site for Southeast Uplift. They may go ahead and hire a full-on contractor, but I'd like to explore doing a home-grown Drupal site too, even if it proves impractical given my limited skills. We would want to use Organic Groups to have separate areas for each neighborhood association, and Events for the calendar view.
One question, right now: Andrew advised me to start over using Drupal 5. I am fine with starting from scratch, but it seems the upgrade process might be rather complex as it moves out of Beta. Any thoughts on whether someone of my skills could easily do that kind of upgrade?
Thanks for any input!

Me and the free skool
Hey, I'm new to drupal too. Don't have much experience with websites beyond simple HTML. I've begun learning drupal for creating the new website of the Portland Free Skool
Right now were still playing around with the modules and such before the site goes live. I have plenty of questions and would love to see if other portland drupalers would like to help.
I've also noticed that there isn't a drupal group devoted to education. Thinking about creating one...

thanks
but i can't tell from the group description what exactly druapaled-distro is. is this a group focused on teaching drupal? i'm looking for something more the other way around: using drupal to teach.
