FLorida Drupal Empire - Branding Discussion

BLadwin's picture

So, after taking a lot of our (FL Drupal Mafia) discussions from DCon Denver a couple weeks ago into consideration, I've come up with some sketches of the ideas that had the most relevance and interest. Attached is a PDF file that has three pages.

The first page is the initial ideas that I had about how we could implement a design, but they are a bit complex for a t-shirt, and way too complex for a sticker.

The second page has most of the ideas that we threw around over some beers on the last day of the conference. The one that has seemed to stick, and I think everyone can agree, is the Drupli-Sun rising behind/above a castle with open doors and a sense of welcoming new-comers into the FL Drupal Community.

The third page is just a better sketch of the Drupli-Sun.
I put some initial notes in the PDF file, but lets continue the discussion here.

ultimike's picture

I love the design on the second page...

For those of you not in on the initial discussion in Denver, the idea is to use some of the surplus money from Florida DrupalCamp to purchase stickers and t-shirts for the Florida Drupal Empire (community). I think it would be great to give our Florida community an identity that will help unify us as well as give us something to rally around.

As far as I know, not too many other geographic regions do this, and I think it would be help grow our community even more.

Personally, I think the logo and tagline should have a little bit of an edge to it - hence the "Florida Drupal Empire" stuff. I think sending the message that we're a tight-knit bunch (but open to newcomers) would serve us well.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

The one with the whole Earth

liberatr's picture

The one with the whole Earth could look really cool if you did one of those "Earth at Night" things with all the dots, and maybe the dots in Florida make a Drop or a Druplicon. Florida would have to be pretty large on the map in order to make the icon legible in dots. It would be a really simple shirt though.

Also, the United States wearing a Drupal Speedo... because Florida looks like... you know... just bikeshedding that one.

Example?

BLadwin's picture

Ryan, do you have an example of "Earth at night" idea? has something like this already been done? for Drupal? any other CMS/logo?

How about the Drupal icon man

How about the Drupal icon man wearing sunglasses, with a sun in the sky with sun body distinctly shaped like drupal man. (Could have other 'lesser' rays coming out.)

I LOVE the Drupalisun on the last page. I think the logo needs to be simple and clean. Why not keep it to a simple stylized Drupalisun? It'd be simple to put on tshirts and business cards.

I don't get the castle..

The castle is a significant

BLadwin's picture

The castle is a significant part of the "empire" mentality. I agree that we could simplify things to just the DrupliSun, but as a whole, I think the castle is essential.

If you can afford the Lego colorspace, a hybrid Cinderella like Lego Castle, you have to watch for Disney police.

NASA Night time composite mosaic is public domain. Easy to find if you actually know the name... there are several from different missions, you just have to use "Composite" in the search. The tiles are probably available in but in raw data.

I like the idea of the FDE in

chrisbudy's picture

I like the idea of the FDE in general.

I too like the sun logo the best out of what's in the PDF. But I see/hear that it's not 'edgey' enough to live up to a name like FDE, but the castle doesn't really do it for me either. Castle makes me think of some feudal kingdom that is small and isolated.

Wonder if there's some way we could play the Druplisun (fire) off of the Druplicon (water)?

When imaging the 'empire' aspect and trying to think of how it could spread to 'take over the world' I just keep thinking of a simple mark that could be put on a flag to indicate we've 'conquered' or 'taken over' an area (whatever that means :)

Another thought, when @ultimike was talking about this to our Tampa group last night, it sounded like one of the neat things is that the FL community is vibrant and gets along well, and that was one of the things to spread. Maybe instead of feudal lords or mafia men, it's more mickey mouse in just spreading happiness and cheer...I prefer the edgey ideas..but hey, we're brainstorming right?

The more I think about it...

chrisbudy's picture

...the more I think the sun is the way to go. I think it could still be 'cool' in the sense that the sun sits above everything, seeing the sun rise behind any number of things, always there, always shedding light on the situation.

It's so simple and versatile.

I get the concept behind the

caelon's picture

I get the concept behind the sun and the castle and it's the most fleshed out of the concepts, but there is certainly no edge to it. Nothing to give it attitude or to show a bit of ego. It even struggles a little to express that it has something to do with Florida.

Something that shows Florida as bigger than the rest of the U.S./world is the line as I was thinking but it's hard to make it happen visually.

Bibliotechie's picture

I wasn't at your meeting but have an idea. Why not take the Drupalisun and incorporate:
open arms (welcome) OR
a simple, line-drawing of a body in the Superman stance (you can do anything with D because it's powerful like it's from another world--not too masculine though--more androgynous as some of us are on the other team--limbs can be drop-like in shape)
I'd keep the shades for the cool factor too.
Not crazy about the castle as it also communicates the past and history instead of the future. D is nothing if not the future, right?
Very nice of you guys to do this!

Thoughts

hotsaucedesign's picture

Personally I'm not 100% behind the idea of an "empire". Maybe its the word itself but I just don't know why we would have to conquer anything to prove how awesome the Florida community is.

I'm racking my brain trying to think of other things to connotate Florida but the sun idea seems to be the best one I can think of. While most life long Floridians know we are more than just beaches, the sun/water is what I think most people think of when they think Florida. Other spherical ideas would be an orange or something to do with a palm tree but those aren't edgy or strong. The risk here is that we could tie in a bunch of stuff - Disney, space shuttle, beaches, alligators, etc but none of them really connect well with each other.

Random thought (and this might be too cartoony) - what about some sort of cartoon alligator, flexing his bicep with the drupal sun logo (or just the plain logo) tattooed on his arm or something, large enough to know what it is but with the gator being "tough" looking too to get that edginess. I can't draw to save my life but something along those lines? Really just throwing stuff out there now...forgive me if its stupid, it's Friday :)

Not sure about the flexing

@chrisbudy - I have to admit I was deadset against using a gator in the logo, but that sketch is pretty flippin' cool. It's unique, simple, clean, fun - all the ingredients of a great logo.

Granted, it's not edgy nor does it have much "attitude", but it sure does make me smile.

Nice!

This is way better than what I was imagining, I really like this. I think we could still make it "edgy" by giving it some slant to the glasses or something. But yeah, way better than my first idea.

Gator is good!

Bibliotechie's picture

Like the Gator idea. People around here wear T's with gators on them, for the team of course, all the time. What about a gator wearing a T with the Drupal sun logo on it?

Not the school per se..

hotsaucedesign's picture

But something along those lines. When I think a logo I think something smaller, a gator with a t-shirt might be too much detail, thats why I was thinking more the head (and lots of teeth!) and the tattoo or something.

Glad I don't sound too crazy though, lol

I think a Seminole warrior

I think a Seminole warrior would be better than a lousy gator!

bhosmer's picture

If we use a mascot that is university based or even related to a university, I think we definitely will cheapen our branding - and run in to the problem of Hatfield and Mccoys. Gators, Seminoles, Hurricanes, Stestons, Knights and many others just wont' mix.

The space theme, while certainly Florida, could also be related to other regions as well like Alabama and Texas.

Really, we don't have much of a claim to fame with space any more anyway.

Oranges are pretty unique to Florida, but also California. Orange County PHP has an orange in their logo: http://ocphp.org/

The State outline is something that is uniquely Florida and not easily confused with anything else.

things uniquely florida

An orange has the added advantage that it can be easily made into a druplicon. Maybe we should incorporate at least two somewhat uniquely florida elements to differentiate ourselves. here is a list of some that may have been brought up already:

Orange
State outline
Flamingo
Sun
Spanish history (castillo san marcos turret?)
Manatees
Sportfishing (Some kind of fish?)
beaches (druplicon sunbathing?)

Can anybody think of any more?

Hang Drupal10

greta_drupal's picture

No offense to anyone, but the "empire" idea -- in addition to sounding domineering (not in the spirit of collectivism that is open source) -- seems a bit geeky -- conjuring ideas of Empire Strikes Back, etc.

Personally (perhaps bias), I would seek to exploit the Florida COOL factor (implying Drupal is cool, too) -- surfing. Something else known for Florida.

And, the Drupal icon is, afterall, a drop of water. So, it would fit nicely with a water theme.

Having just designed some surf logos, I can attest that VectorStock.com has some awesome wave/surfing images. Here are a few rough mashups for ideas to that end.

I envisioned the Drupal logo being a droplet from a wave crest. But, this image made for a cool logo:

This is an awesome image and one that could easily be modified to make the inner sun body the Drupal logo shape -- or even replaced with the precise logo but in orange. Bet the artist of the image would even do that.

Truth is that many Florida keywords can also apply to other states; so, I wouldn't focus on that as an issue.

Although I'm a huge Gator

mherchel's picture

Although I'm a huge Gator fan, I don't think that's the way to go.

My preferences are 1) sun or 2) orange because of simplicity. I think whatever we do needs to be simple.

I love Orange County PHP's logo, btw. If we could do something along the lines of that...

greta_drupal's picture

As a producer, my mind goes here:

Hire one of those sandcastle artists to build the Drupalman logo on an actual Florida beach! Stage it nice backdrop, with some buried flipflops in hand and/or surfboard and/or pina coloda, etc. Now that would really unique. I think the execution of this alone would gives the message that Florida is Drupal force to be reckoned with! :-)

Could convert that to a reusable logo.

And, as a videographer/producer, I'd videotape that being done. Maybe you'd even get some FL Drupalers to show up on the beach to pose with the finished product.

Plus, you could probably get some media coverage. The local media would likely come and cover the building of that sandcastle. (just don't schedule it when there is a sandcastle competition or exhibit...too much media competition.)

Here you go: Drupal logo + castle + FL icon...

This has been a great discussion to watch, and participate in. I like all of the ideas presented, especially the "[Giant] Flamingo of DOOM!!!"

Justin, thanks for those designs. They look great. To make the sun a bit "edgier" I think it might be best to use some rays of light [not quite flames], like in greta_drupal's post. I love the "text in space" design you did, and think that plays really well into my Deathstar idea.

I like the idea of a surfing Druplicon, but don't know if it works as well as the sun - after all, FL is "The Sunshine State".

The Flamingo and Gator icons are fantastic ideas, and I would love to see them implemented. I don't think that they are a great fit for the entire state though [maybe better for Gainesville and South FL, respectively].

Don, yes. Agreed! We've all gotten our ideas out on the table now, and have a few of them pretty fleshed-out. I'm going to get my rendition of the Druplisun done, along with my Deathstar-FLDrupal t-shirt idea.

Sharks & Roaches

hotsaucedesign's picture

I think that commentary has been really good so far and Erik has accomplished his goal of feedback but I have to say that sharks and roaches aren't really good ideas (IMO).

Any state with a real coastline can have a shark (West coast, east coast, texas, etc). And while palmetto bugs are gross and feared they live everywhere too.

I still think staying fairly unique to Florida is a good idea. We have a pirate for our logo here in Tampa (http://tbdug.com/), what about that? Pirates are unique to Florida (I think?) and are pretty menacing. Or there are manatees and flamingos as have been suggested.

Just my feedback.

I LOVE the pirate idea, but

mherchel's picture

I LOVE the pirate idea, but the trick is not copying what others have already done.

The thing about any logo we do (sun, castle, whatever) is that other states could lay claim to it.

Morton DK's pirate logo shirt:

BADcamp's pirate logo:

Google "image drupal pirate"

greta_drupal's picture

Google "image drupal pirate" -- you'll see another Drupal pirate logo.

I would not worry about discounting everything that can be applied to other states. Afterall, every state has the sun. Or, something that also is used as a team logo -- afterall, it is used because it is iconic. (There is a sharks soccer team, too.)

Even the flamingo, which I liked, might be associated with Florida; but, where can you actually see those. (FYI: Along the drive to Playalinda Beach.) The Drupalman logo with an eyepatch and do-rag -- maybe sword in mouth -- would be cool. But, likely makes a better Tampa bay area Drupal group logo since it is so strongly associated with that area.

Too much overthinking. Just pick something that implies Florida and make a nice logo of it.

[No matter what is decided, I think this has made for a fun, creative thread perfectly suited for procrastination. On that note...]

No sharks, no gators. Floridians think of those, but not everyone else. I think it's between the diver (nice job!) and the sun. But I too think you should lose the martini glass, and maybe even the surfboard. Transplant the drupal looking sunglasses onto it from the two images with water. And somehow make the top of the sun more drupalish? I am no artist, so I couldn't begin to try to show anything. Got this look in my head.... :-)

Seeking an ace in the Florida Drupal Empire!

Joe Adams's picture

Greetings all!

I am working on a project and could use a little help with some tweaks from a Florida Drupal Empire ace in the Orlando area. This is pretty basic stuff, but I'm a content dude and not a developer! Here's where I need a hand:

To add new rails to my right rail. This should be simple, but something is keeping me from being able to do it. I need someone who can show me how to create them and move them around as I please.

Add a teaser rail to my right rail with thumbnail images that link to other content. I have an example of what I want to do that I can show you.

Figure out how to get past my 7 mb limit on images for my pages. I could probably fix this myself but I don't want to do any damage by trying. Any image that I attempt to add to any page -- even if it's just 1k! -- kicks back to me as being over the limit.

I also need help on activating my RSS feed section of my site and learning how to add new content.

I live in the Orlando area and would like to be able to connect in person with someone who could help make the changes and teach me how to navigate a couple of these features on my own for the future. I'm not the expert, but I figure this is probably a three-to five-hour kind of thing depending on what we encounter. Plus, there might be some other work down the road.

If this sounds like your kind of mission, please email me at joe@idiganswers.com. Thanks!

The diver has actually grown

mherchel's picture

The diver has actually grown on me today. I like the fact that its a synonym for digging into the code. I also think it conveys a sense of adventure.

Analogs

dustinjcooper's picture

I think there are many analogs that can be drawn from the diver motif. "Dive Into Drupal", to me is marketed towards people new to Drupal, enticing them to be more apart of the community.

Mike I agree that the Diver gives off a sense of adventure, which I didn't think about before. Drupal has been an exploratory adventure for me, so this fits perfectly from my vantage point.

Some other ideas of the top of my head are:
"Dive into Drupal Code"
"Explore the Depth of the Drupalverse"
"Drupal is Deep" and/or "Mysterious"
"Descend into Drupal"
"Adventure Awaits"
Ocean = Web, Diver = Web Developer/Designer/Etc
Drupal is Deep and Mysterious
Represents Florida, without using something overused, like the sun

The main thing I liked about this theme is how it can appeal to both men and women and all walks of life. The character isn't aggressive, but rather he/she/it is interesting and fun. All things that I think Drupal and especially the community, represent. I can't think of anything negative about Divers. At least I don't think so, but I am a certified diver so maybe I'm bias ;P.

Thanks for your comments. Keep'em coming. I'll be working them into my next revision. Also, please vote my design up if you like it. Take care.

Brand

dustinjcooper's picture

I'm not sure it is necessary to use the number one thing that comes to mind when thinking of Florida, the Sun, as the logo. Of course I like my sun design and want to build on it. However, I think the sun is over used. On the flip side the sun is simple which is its strong point. The diver is a little more complicated, I want to simplify it to make it a better logo. Right now it works well as part of the masthead.

I think that the should focus more on being unique and creative. As well as having a connection to Florida, but it doesn't have to be so obvious. I think the Diver is interesting and has potential to draw a connection to the Florida Drupal Community. More so than the sun at this moment.

If you look at other brands out there, many of their names don't even make sense or correlate to what they do, or at least it isn't obvious. For example Google, Apple or even Bad Camp. Its all about how you associate and market your brand. The logo needs to be easy to recognize, even on a business cards and needs to be promoted everywhere possible and remain consistent. As long as we don't use something that doesn't make any connection to florida, like a Platapus, then I think we will be ok. Its more about the tone and uniqueness of the design that is most important in my opinion.

Enjoying this thread. Thanks for the comments.

My first choice is the sun (without the martini). Second choice would be the word Florida with the Drupal Orange in it. Third choice would be the diver. Even though there are other states with divers, I think a lot of people would associate Florida with diving.

Drupal sun graphic

greta_drupal's picture

Just downloaded a vector graphic to use for a project. Notice a very Drupaly-shaped sun image in there. (other beachy icons too) The rays look like Drupal icon spawns. That would be a cool style to play off of...if you decide to go with Drupalisun.

Better late than never ...

I like the Drupal logo being a droplet from a wave crest with sunglasses (of course) and the sun in background.

I also liked the idea of using an image of the state of florida I have a photo image of earth/florida taken from the ISS but I don't know how to upload it here. It is NASA owned and free to be used. I'll email it to Mike.

One more thing, regarding a Florida specific image (gator, orange, etc.). Well, how about using the Florida Scrub Jay? It won't take much to drupalize him - he's already half way there! I'm sure some of our artist friends could jazz this bird up to look really cool.

Sun, Shark, Diver

As amusing as this thread has been, I think it time we attempt to come to a decision.

It looks like the four most popular concepts are the Sun, Shark, and Diver.

Erik - will you create a mockup of the sun logo?

Dustin - will you create mockups of the shark and diver logos?

I don't think it is going to be possible to please everyone (I still really like the "empire castle" idea!), but I think it is fair to say that these three ideas have the most traction.

Once we have all three mockups, we'll create a poll to see if we can determine a clear-ish choice.

Mike, yes, the Druplifin is awesome! Also, whats the fourth option? Are you keeping it super-secret because you're providing the mockup?

Let's Make it Four!

JCL324's picture

Yes Mike, I still would like the castle somewhere and hoped to see more with Greta's idea of the sand castle for the empire with the sun rising over the ocean/horizon. A sand castle would take away any part of the old or threatening emotion and be very Florida-y. So this was the 4th one you left off the list, eh eh? Someone do a mockup, pretty please??

But the diver just works on so many levels and he's just way too cute! Even lends itself to a costume for a real life Drupli-Diver :-)

Has anyone brought up the

Has anyone brought up the Castle as a Spanish Fort? Like in St. Augustine? Probably one of the most significant things about Florida (the oldest, longest-running settlement).

I mentioned it earlier, but

agileox's picture

I mentioned it earlier, but nobody bit. Just showing a Spanish-style fortress turret would be enough and fairly simple to draw. Like this example:

A spanish style fort turret is very distinctive and Florida's history as an important part of Spanish colonization of the New World is definitely unique to any other state.

sun and castillo

agileox's picture

How about something like this Castillo with drupalsun?

DrupalSun

agileox's picture

As I look at the drupalsun with castillo, I'm now thinking that the sun is an incredibly versatile logo for Florida Drupal Empire. The sun can shine on almost anything, so we can add our brand to almost any other context. Something related to Tampa? Drupalsun over Pirate Ship. Orlando? Drupalsun over Disney castle. Gainesville? Drupalsun over gator. Miami? Drupalsun over PitBull. You get what I mean? The possibilites are endless.

something for everyone

PMydock's picture

Florida IS the sunshine state. If we agree on this idea then each local drupal group could choose their own local drupal icon reference.

Perhaps we could have an overall tableau with the drupal sun icon dominant over a slew of sharks, gators, divers, castles, oranges, seminoles, golden knights, marlins, jaguars, et cetera, and keep on expanding the list until the sun goes nova.

If the Gainesville group wants a gator then who is to say that the Miami group cannot have a pitbull.

sun logo

agileox's picture

The simplicity of the sun makes if very useable and easily adapted to many printed formats like t-shirts, letterheads, cards, and other promotional items like cups, pens and the like. In the example above there are only 4 colors used.

Also it is simple enough to look good in avatars and icons.

Logo looks nice. I'd leave a bit more orange edge nearest the outer eye. I know you have kept to the original, but the sun spot, and subsequent shadow, on the Duplisun is ironic. :-)

Logos are most often placed in upper left corner of a page. Best practice design is not to have eyes looking off the page (unless that is the specific concept, of course.). Plus, why deviate from the original, with respect to orientation.

I've been around the block

caelon's picture

I've been around the block enough times to recognize when there's momentum behind an idea. I will just throw this out there and the branding and marketing experts out there are welcome to refute me.

If you go with something too simple, not distinctive enough to brand itself, you end up adding to the clutter and not standing out. It is for this reason that I'm not in favor of the sun; it's simply overused in way too many ways and not all of them associated with Florida.

The logos themselves are good and idea to use it to augment local groups is great; I just am leery of its lack of uniqueness.

Holy Trinity

@Ultimike - Mission Complete.

After reviewing the thread's feedback I put together a "Holy Trinity" of potential Florida Drupal logo's. I started with the Drupal Shark then decided to update the Drupal Diver with a smile. Finally, just for fun, I had to play with the Drupal Sun. Love to hear what you all think.

While I have your attention, I want to let the Drupal community know that I would love to design graphics for future Drupal projects. I feel that this is a great way for me to give back to the Drupal community. The community is also welcome to any of these logos that do not get used for this contest.

how can we make one indicate 'Florida'?

sebastianSue's picture

Wow, Justin, I like them all! However, each one could be used in many different sunny maritime areas. What if the reflections in the sun's glasses could be more distinctly 'Florida'? maybe the outline of the state? or a simplified image of the state flag?

Awesome!

BLadwin's picture

Justin, fantastic work! I agree with greta, I liked the diver better with the dark breathing apparatus - all blue looks okay, I just feel like the Druplicon was more "in focus" before. With regard to the sun, it looks great ... when it's on that "sun-ray" background. How would we use it standalone? Would the sun-rays fade into a circle? Would the ends of the rays be staggered? I'm just trying to picture how it would stand on it's own. The shark is awesome! At first glance though, the shadow (larger dark blue shape) in the tail, while it seems to be an extension of the dark blue in the face, it doesn't add any depth to it. Can you flip the dark blue shape in the tail horizontally, so that it looks like the head is casting a shadow?

Great work. I'm working on a sun as well and have also been working on a DripliConquestador for the Castillo De San Marcos idea. I'm hoping to have these completed and posted this week.

Why did you decide not to use the original Druplicon "nose" on the shark?

I think another poster's observation about the piece of coral sparked a good idea -- why not make that piece of coral shape as state of Florida...a subtle reference.

Some more ideas...

DaveNotik's picture

I have some great concepts on paper sketched by Lou Grasso (illustrator, former Drupal Miami attendee) some years back and I thought I'd scan them in to add some ideas to the discussion. I've emailed Lou to ask if I could share but I'm pretty sure he'd want his ideas in the mix here. He might work with the community to flesh out a logo, or at least his ideas might inspire a better end result. I also might work with a designer on our team to come up with something based on these ideas -- I planned to do this for Drupal Miami, but I think it makes sense to apply the energy to the broader Drupal Florida effort, and perhaps Drupal Miami could use the same logo or a variation of it.

Here's the first page of Lou's sketches, and I'll try to post more tomorow: http://goo.gl/5dpUj

I like this one, but I've long thought we should convey the best of both worlds -- a sunshine paradise as well as a world class city. Rather than the boat in this concept, I'd love to see some Miami cityscape. Again, I might work with my team to come up with something, hopefully within the deadline.

Best,

--D

UPDATE: I've changed the link to a folder and also dropped in another concept, this one with the cityscape. I like a blend between the two I've posted.

copyright?

ultimike's picture

@DaveNotick,

A couple of things that may be a cause of concern with the sketches/logos you submitted.

  1. The sketches you posted have a copyright on them. I'm pretty sure that would make a lot of people a bit nervous about using something derived from them as a state-wide logo. Any chance we can get that copyright removed/revoked?
  2. I'm not sure about the use of the Drupal wordmark - that might be protected as well. Can you check it out and let me know.

Thanks,
-mike

Hi Mike,I think Lou's just

DaveNotik's picture

Hi Mike,

1. I think Lou's just accustomed to including that, but here's the latest from his wife and partner Gigi Grasso:

"Fine with us if you want to submit Lou's ideas for the logo. Will look but I think these were done on paper and scanned to become tiffs or jpegs, so no pdfs. The more the merrier! Hope a good logo comes out of this."

I'll reach out to get a more specific revocation.

2. Right, I think it might be. I'm not concerned at this stage, as we're focused on the Druplicon itself and the "scene"... we'll focus on the text after and will likely remove the mark. Feel free to crop it up as you wish for now.

I'll continue to share, and if we don't have something great for the deadline, we'll keep moving on a Drupal Miami proposal.
