Event type:
User group meeting
This month we're talking CSS preprocessors - specifically Compass/SASS and LESS. Both of these tools can speed up and enhance your CSS development by allowing you to use things like variables and mixins to dynamically generate your code. We'll have presentations on each as well as time for questions and answers.
Meeting location:
Funny Monkey
2410 E Burnside St.
Portland, OR 97232
Parking is on the street and the #20 bus has a stop right in front of the door / across the street. Please signup if you're interested since the space is a bit limited. We look forward to seeing you there!

Slides, etc?
For those of us who really wanted to come but couldn't make it for whatever reason... were there slides or any other resources you might have? Thanks.
I think Dan Linn had some
I think Dan Linn had some slides. I'll see if I can get a link.
Here are my rather cryptically concise notes:
LESS notes:
- Apps (for Mac) that help: The LESS app as well as CodeKit
- Ability to and examples of nesting of styles
- LESS files Evan often uses: nodes.less views.less block.less layout.less common-elements.less variables.less or feature-based style-sheets
- FireSASS firefox extension for debugging SASS
- HSL (for colors) can be useful
- "Responsive Web Design" book - A Book Apart
- Examples of variables, mixins
- Textmate less bundle works with Sublime Text
- Faux-columns: A gradient
- CSS3PIE helps IE with CSS3
- Evan has some code snippets on GitHub
Compass notes:
- Compass is an add-on library for SASS
- Dan used Impress JS (presentation cool stuff)
- Compass has a built in PIE mixin
- Automagic sprites: sprites limit HTTP requests by putting all images in one image file and move them around using background-position. Can be process-intensive and iPhones can't display larger than 2 million pixels.
- Oily.png
- Compass.app for Macs
- Live Reload app: is helpful, but not totally reliable
- Dan wrote a Drupal theme called Boilerplate
- Box-sizing, there's something that makes IE behave with it
- Modernizr
