I gave a project to a Drupal Developer which took him 6 months to work on. Once I paid him when he said he was having financial issues he was gone. Found out he took other projects and never finished mine. His name is Teody c. Seguin I think it is bad when you take a project and leave client waiting 6 months and a have the client lose money everyday it is not live. now I am stuck with a website that is not finished and some pages missing. Any suggestions? Should i stop dealing with developers from the Phillipines?

Background Check

It's your responsibility to check their background. I'm not shifting the blame on you. But it's like any job. If an employee apply, their employer should check right?
Tips: Also, if you payed the programmer too cheap. Most likely they don't know programming.

I don't think Jafar was

I don't think Jafar was dealing with an employee but with a freelance.
Giving advance money to accommodate an emergency was a change of the initial agreement which with a freelance resource you have no control of is a very risky move.
If you want the assurance to complete your projects, you may sign a contract with a company probably pay a little bit more but you get the the guaranty that your supplier is committed to replace any resource who may leave during the project.
It is mostly about the financial earning opposed to the level of risk you are taking.
When you want to pay less you need to take risks,
When you don't want to take risks you need to pay more.

The good news is that in any case this has nothing to do with the Philippines. You could be facing exactly the same situation is India or US. This happens all the time everywhere.

Hope this help,

This is a very risky thread.

This is a very risky thread. We are not giving Mr. Seguin a voice here, and his reputation is on the line. That's because this is not the venue for this sort of thing.

JafarR, I suggest you contact a lawyer here in the Philippines, so he can send a letter in your behalf (or whatever he suggests) to Mr. Seguin. He can then take it from there.

Otherwise this thread needs to end. We do not have the ability to conduct investigations so we cannot make correct judgements.

There's always a few bad eggs..

There's bound to be a few bad eggs somewhere in a basket full of eggs.

That is why I usually insist to project owners who want to engage freelancers in projects to use a third-party go-between like odesk, elance, or freelancer.

Freelancers don't get screwed over and project owners have some level of protection and not resort to lawyers.

Life is too short to be dealing with lawyers.

There's more!
