Let me preface this by saying I feel like a complete cheeseball for a number of reasons:
- my first patch was adding the // $Id$ tag to the top of jquery.js in Drupal 7, this is not rad
- (this is so embarrassing) It took three patches before I got it right.
Despite all that I'm totally stoked. Webchick and the rest of the developers in #drupal where really friendly and helpful, they basically walked me step by step through the process of getting CVS set up, pulling down a copy of HEAD and creating a patch. The entire process was nowhere near as complex as I thought it would be. I'm hooked!

Novice Tag
Apparently there's a Novice Tag for issues if anyone else wants to jump in on something simple.
Core is pretty complex and interconnected, so in general I'd recommend trying to patch bugs in some module you use until you get comfortable with the process. You can also play patch bingo, or check out the issue queue of a favorite module for some change to review and test for an easy way to give back to the community.
Actually, doing a conversion from D5 to D6 is a pretty good project as well, if you see some module you want to use. Future tutorial session btw ;)

Thanks for showing the novice tag. It would be fun to have a Drupal hack night where we all patch core.
