User group meeting

I am happy to announce our next meeting agenda. Matthew Mowers is going to present on his latest project.

Matt says, "...

The site on which I will be presenting is an events site that I will try to launch soon in Ames. Events of various types are posted by either "venues" or "individuals", and users are able to browse events on a filterable google map. The exposed filters are Location, Event type, Time range, Keyword Search, and a couple others. Anonymous users can browse events, as well as look up the schedules and basic information on the venues. In addition to these tasks, authenticated "individuals" may also designate favorite venues, become friends with other users, and add events to personal schedules. Authenticated "Venue" users are simply allowed to post and view their own events, edit their information, and view fans. I am also considering using Fivestar for rating venues, but this feature has not yet been added. The design of the site is tailored toward mobile web users, although I haven't yet had the opportunity to test the site on a mobile browser (to this point I have simply been resizing my desktop browser window).

The subjects I would like to address at the drupalcorn meeting are:
1. Briefly describe site. Interact with site as Anonymous user, Individual user, and Venue user (15 mins).
2. Custom code (20-30 mins)
a. PHP: briefly discuss the various functions in my custom glue code and see if anyone has suggestions for improving this code.
b. Jquery/javascript: Briefly go over the custom jquery I added for the main event browsing map view and see if anyone has suggestions for improving. On issue e.g. is that I added a lot of html via jquery, whereas I would imagine much of this could be added more efficiently via PHP template files.
3. Suggestions for improving security
4. Suggestions for improving speed
5. Suggestions for improving SEO
6. Any other suggestions

Right now I'm trying to get my site online so I can test on other devices as well. If you would like to take a look at it before the meeting let me know and I'll send the url when I get it online.

"

LOCATION

We'll be meeting in Room 9, Curtiss Hall at Iowa State University Google Map. Please excuse the mess in the hallways as parts of the building are being remodeled.

As always, there will be time for open discussion/question time. If you have a question, or would like to bounce ideas around with others, please come and share!

Hello all I wanted to remind you all of tonight's meeting. Matt has ben waiting months to present and so we will have lots to critique! hehe.

For those that can't make it to Ames tonight. Let's try out some new technology. I will announce a Google+ hangout over channel drupalcorn and right here. Could be cool for the first part of the meeting 7-8pm. Maybe we can get Matt jacked in so he show his screen over the hangout. Let's see how that works. Hope to see everyone from out of town.

Looking forward to tonight. Cheers.

Regards,
Michael Hofmockel

Decision Time

Now I'm torn... Hop in the car for a familiar (aka mind-numbing) 50-minute drive to Ames, or visit via the hangout? I just got home from a week in Chicago so I'm inclined to stay put. Maybe I can help test the hangout process? Sounds fun. Hope to see you all (but you won't see me) at 7 PM tonight.

So, do I post a sign-up to attend? I suppose I will. You can remove me if you don't want virtual attendees in the sign-up list.

Thanks Michael for offering this option. Hope it works well. Take care.

I'm in San Antonio at a conference. I would be interested in doing the Google hangout as well.

A better web cam

An idea I have for dsm web geeks which is starting to do the same thing: I've picked up a used DV camcorder with firewire output so that it can be used as an external webcam. The optics, sensor and audio are all far superior to built in laptop web-cams. I don't know if anyone in your group has a camera like this, but if so, you might try it out. You'll of course need a computer with firewire and the proper cable. (I've had to order a 9pin cable for mine, so I haven't tested it yet)
