Adding the Trim only on a word boundary / Add an ellipsis functionality would really boost Display Suite's Trim Option and make it really usable. I made some really cool views with Display Suite Format Options but had to remove it because my customer did not like that words where cut off after two or three letters.
Did anyone have the same issue? Is there a work around?

I'm not sure. I use - and recommend users to use - the abstract field above the text field delivered with core. An abstract is better than any cut-off string. I would appreciate the option to make the abstract mandatory and be able to set the max length of it.

I agree 100% with your original post. Smart Trim seems like it would do just what we wanted and perhaps more in other situations.

Often, the solution to a Display Suite problem is actually to address the issue at a Field level instead. :)
