Drupal Distributions Profiles Group is nice, but what about an entire Drupal Distributions website?

The Drupal Distribution Profiles group is nice, but what about creating an entire Drupal Distributions website?

I'm enjoying the way Drupal Groups is helping me connect with people interested in similar target markets, like school alumni associations, student organizations and churches. But I find that the organic groups construct is good for only basic discussion and organizing, and too limited for the real work of assembling a specific Drupal distribution. I began to create a structure for thinking about an Alumni distribution in the Alumni Group, but there's just too little flexibility to do it there. That's no fault of organic groups, it's just not what they were intended to do.

What do people think about creating something like a Drupal Distributions site, specifically designed to facilitate the development of all the different possible distribution interest groups? This common "distribution assembly infrastructure" would, IMHO, improve the odds of collaboration over competition and also increase the consistency of how distributions are developed and released.

BorisMann: so far, we have......Zero distributions / install profiles. I just posted about how easy it is to create them. Creating a group per profile (if it gets that far...) IS probably a good way to get started. These wiki pages will, I think, help with that.

MosheWeitzman: there is no point to making this post a wiki page. we are not authoring a colaborative document ... please what services you want from this "whole web site". groups aims to be a web site within a web site and give groups all the tools they need to be productive. what tools are you missing. yhou are stating a "solution" (move to new web site) without detailing the problem ... You are aware that groups can classify posts into their own taxonomy, right?

greggles: MosheWeitzman++. The initial question needs to be "what features/support do you want" and then we can see about whether it needs to be implemented on Drupal.org, Groups.Drupal.org, or a separate site.
