Thoughts about using Ubercart 3 v. Drupal Commerce anyone?

Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts regarding pros/cons, anecdotes, or opinions about Ubercart 3 v. Drupal Commerce. I pretty much followed Ryan Szrama with his switch from Ubercart to Drupal Commerce. I've found Drupal Commerce to be powerful and simpler in some respects, but then crazy-wild more complicated in others. And unfortunately, some of those others are aspects that the client wants to have control over yet obviously can't be expected to know the details of how to do heavy Drupal Commerce administration.

I haven't used Ubercart since Ubercart 2 and remember how relatively easy it was to add on product attributes/variants v. the addition of all the various product permutations required in Drupal Commerce (at least as I understand the process). I got an email today about Ubercart 3 and all it's Drupal 7 goodness and realized I probably shouldn't discount it as an option in future products without knowing a little more about what it's been up to.

Anyone have thoughts about it v. Drupal Commerce these days?

Use drupal commerce

joemoraca's picture

I took over a site that was using ubercart in drupal 7 - I have nothing good to say about the process - and the site is now using wordpress. (I didn't build the current site)

last draw was all of the ajax processes on the checkout page just slowed to an unusable crawl. (no code changes for weeks)

I can provide more whining if you want - but that will cost a beer ;-)

have you tried kickstart v2 ... very cool

What are some of the things

What are some of the things that are "crazy-wild more complicated" that would lead you to consider Ubercart?

I decided to give DC a go for a recent project and the sticking point for me was the separation between product creation & 'display'. Meaning, when you create a product, it isn't visible in the catalog until you also create a product display. I read somewhere that it was likened to the difference between a product being in storage vs being on a shelf in a store. Frankly, it seems like completely overthinking things and no client in their right mind would accept a solution that essentially requires creating a product twice.

That being said, it is possible to create rules that automatically create a display when a product is created, but I was unable to suss this out. Thus I used UC3, which was familiar & relatively easy to get up to speed with.

try Kickstarter v2

Commerce Guys specifically addressed that problem in http://drupal.org/project/commerce_kickstart v2.0. Check that out next time around.

Yeah, I remember this

mherchel's picture

Yeah, I remember this usability issue when initially demoing Commerce while it was in alpha or beta.

I'm going to have to check out the new kickstart.

That being said, is this an add-in module that enables this functionality, or is this some type of configuration? The reason I'm asking is because I may need to add commerce functionality to a current D7 site.

Thanks,

It's a smooshing of forms that puts everything in one place. The salient feature comes from this: http://drupal.org/project/inline_entity_form

Geez - Kickstart 2 was out

Geez - Kickstart 2 was out when I was trying DC, would've been nice if I could have found it. What kind of a solution has been implemented?

@robertDouglass Sorry for the

DigitalFrontiersMedia's picture

@robertDouglass Sorry for the delayed response, but yeah, pretty much the same frustrations voiced above by others. Some of those things were complicated by the fact that no matter how awesome the new model was, try explaining to a client they'd have to create hundreds (or thousands) of different products instead of simply adding on a few attributes. I don't know about your clients, but if I tried to sell that to one of my clients, they would no longer be my client. That and the fact that some of my clients aren't ready to sell on the web yet, but it would be NUTS to not use something like Drupal Commerce to "pre-organize" their products from the start and just not configure the cart functions until they're ready. So, as with mherchel I'm left with a "Well, that's great that Kickstart 2 solves these problems, but how does that help me with an existing D7 site" issue.

All that said, I didn't quite understand your comment about the "smooshing of forms" (though I do like smooshing), until Ryan walked me through Kickstarter 2 and explained how with some finagling (I like finagling, too) the Features and modules that pretty much set up the Kickstarter 2 awesomeness could be integrated with my existing site.

And after all the stuff I saw today, I have to say, yeah, I don't see any point in considering UC3.

Thanks for all the comments here. And Robert, very sexy legs in that bavarian dress. :-D

I support Ubercart, and believe that Ubercart will be the last winner, it need a long time.
(1) ,commerce module is owned by a commerce company, Ubercart is owned by the commmunity. Commece module is support by big Drupal company, such as Acquia, Commerce Guys, Lullabot. Ubercart is supported by small Drupal company and freelancer.
(2), There are a lot improvement in Commerce, For example Address field. But Address field will be depricated in the future, it will be replaced by field collection. Not all improment is good for end users.

(3),inline_entity_form is a sollution, but solve it by invent a big module, with various bugs. it is too complex.

(4),Ubercart will become more and more better.

@g089h515r806: While some matters of opinion are to be expected here, especially when it comes to Commerce versus Ubercart, a few of your statements are actually wrong.

commerce module is owned by a commerce company, Ubercart is owned by the commmunity.

This statement is outright wrong. Commerce is also owned by the community and GPL code just like Ubercart is. Anyone can modify this code and use it. If Commerce Guys or Acquia disappears, DrupalCommerce will still exist, just like all code on drupal.org

good comparison
