July Meetup Notes

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

The July meetup of the (central) Florida Drupal User's Group was held on Saturday, July 18 at the offices of Mind Comet on Altamonte Springs.

There were 15 people in attendance including some new faces. There were Drupal developers of all skills, hobbyists, marketing people, and business owners.

Damien McKenna (damienmckenna) got things going with a walk-through of the Context module. He also mentioned that his company, Bonnier, is hiring Drupal developers - contact him if you're interested.

Kevin Bridges (cyberswat) continued the theme by diving in to the Features module. This module basically packages up a "feature" of a web site by creating a module that stores the various settings that define the feature. Kevin showed an example of creating an imageboard - consisting of a content type, imagecache presets, views, and some other settings. He used the Features module to package all the settings into a new module. Finally, he went to a brand new Drupal site and showed that by simply enabling the new "imageboard" module, all of the required modules, views, content types, and other settings were automatically created and/or enabled in a single click. Everyone was really, really impressed by the power and ease of using it.

Our next meetup is a 4-hour meetup schedule for Saturday, August 15th at 1PM at Mind Comet's offices in Altamonte Springs.

Drupal in Miami

DaveNotik's picture

Hey Mike and Central Florida:

Wish I could join! But Orlando's quite a ways from Miami, as I discovered when I visited Disney World for my first time in May. :)

If you know of any Drupal folks local to Miami, perhaps they came to your meetup, can you put us in touch? I'd like to get together with local Drupal developers to both talk about working together (see http://groups.drupal.org/node/24671) and to get meetups and additional Drupal support going down here. I want to put Miami on the Drupal map. I know there has been some activity in the area and some other folks looking to do this as well (http://groups.drupal.org/node/22202), but perhaps you're positioned to point me in the best direction.

Hope to take a drive out to Orlando for one of your future meetups!

Dave, There's a few Drupal

Dave,

There's a few Drupal developers in South Florida and it would be great if you guys could start having regular meetups. Pretty much all of the South Florida developers down there that I know follow this group, so this is probably your best best in getting in touch with them.

We had a Florida DrupalCamp back in February and we had quite a few people drive up from South Florida, so we know they're down there.

If you want to plan a meetup, I'll make the drive down if I'm available.

Local Drupal Developers

Lanesa's picture

Hi I'm local and would love to attend. I've been wanting to attend for a about 2 months now but decided to wait until I become a little more skilled and acquainted with Drupal and whenever a meeting became available in South Florida. I'm in the Lake Worth / West Palm Beach area.

Hi again.

So I believe it's valuable to have a simple email list to bring us together, as complementary to this space.

I've registered www.drupalmiami.com, which now points to a new Google Group called Drupal in Miami.

I encourage anyone who's interested in Drupal and local to the greater Miami area to subscribe.

I'll work on other avenues as necessary and stay focused on what works in connecting us.
