Start:
2012-08-21 19:00 - 21:00 Australia/Brisbane Event type:
User group meeting
This meet-up is at the usual location - Irish Murphys in the city from 7-9pm. Great location as food and drinks are literally outside the door.
We'll be in the meeting room upstairs to the left of the stairs behind the door. The room has a projector for the speeches and is shielded from most of the downstairs noise which is great!
I'll be presenting on Project Management tools for small and larger teams based on a review of various systems we conducted earlier in the year.
Looking for someone else who'd like to present something they've been working on, or with!
After the presentations we'll have more general discussion on all things Drupal and Web.
Look forward to seeing you all then.

Brisbane meet-up looks good for tomorrow (Tues) night
Thanks for organising this - we presume that the hotel are on-board / locked-in??
See you tomorrow night.
</bump>dang it
another thats no good for me.
sean bannister and i had a chat about starting our own northside one! half joking half serious
Looking foward to it.
I am assuming newcomers are welcome. I will be a new face.
How many people normally attend?
Hi Slarv, Yes newcomers are
Hi Slarv,
Yes newcomers are very welcome.
We are a pretty small friendly group, usually between 6 and 12 people.
Bad News...
Hi all,
I called to confirm the booking with the function manager and have found out that tonight they're fully open to public due to the public holiday tommorow. Whilst I'd confirmed a few weeks back apparently the manager I spoke with musn't have realised it was a Public Holiday the day after, which changes their booking policies (guess it makes sense for them, but warning would have been nice!)
I'm stuck in two minds between trying to hire a room in the state library to do it tonight and delaying this months meeting till next Tuesday. Let me know your preference and I'll make the appropriate booking.
Cheers,
Daniel
Hey Daniel, You have most of
Hey Daniel,
You have most of the Drupal people at work with you, what do they want to do.
I'm happy to go in tonight and if we can't get the room just or it's too noisy, move to a cafe or something.
Good call, Tony! Standing by
Good call, Tony!
Standing by for advice either way...
Standing by
I don't mind if the event is moved to a near by venue or postponed until next week. A decision at or before 6:30pm would be helpful.
EDIT: Never mind. Decision has been made.
Looks like plans are under
Looks like plans are under way to postpone this for one week... no point in having a meeting if we are in a venue where we can't hear each other. And given Daniel's post above about the pub backing out of our booking of the room, that is what might happen.
So... probably until same time and place next Tuesday. But, stand-by for confirmation of this from Daniel, Chris or Tony.
Cheers for the post Sean and
Cheers for the post Sean and sorry for being locked in meetings this afternoon & not responding!
At this stage the best move is to cancel tonight and postpone to next week (same time, same place). I'll line it up with the pub for next week but think it's worth a discussion on venue since I've had a few issues with the venue now.
Very sorry for the confusion all.
thanks Daniel. Sounds good. I
thanks Daniel. Sounds good.
I have heard back now from Slarv and from John Zornig - so all 6 of us who have so far signed up are now aware of postponement. So at least none of these 6 will be left high and dry tonight....
I'm a new face here guys
Hey guys,
I just "jumped" the Joomla ship for Drupal recently and am still finding my way around it but, love every second of it.
Seeing that the meet up is postponed can someone adjust the event dates so we can sign up for next one?
Or the date is still not locked in?

Hey,
Date is set now and I'm looking to lock in the venue. If the usual fails I'll find a back-up venue to ensure it goes ahead!
Will be good to see you at the meet-up however, always good to see the community growing.
Cheers,
Daniel
Sign ups closed?
I am trying to sign up for this meet up but it seems sign ups are closed.... Venue is full or?

That's odd...
Hi Mario,
Sign-ups are set to be open. Hopefully you can sign-up now, but if not please come along - there's no set limit to seats at the venue!
Look forward to seeing you tommorow!
Cheers,
Daniel
It still shows as closed
It still shows as closed to me but happy to just show up too :)
Can you just confirm the venue is Irish Murphy's in the city because there was some uncertainty with that earlier? Thanks

Having grown up in Brisbane
Having grown up in Brisbane this is great to see a Drupal community growing. It's a damn shame I'm not there!
Thanks all for coming last
Thanks all for coming last night! Was great to see a number of new faces turn up. Once a few of the others are back from their world travels we'll have a pretty solid number of people!
Thanks again also for putting up with my voice - if anyone is interested the tools I discussed last night were:
http://www.pivotaltracker.com/
http://www.wrike.com/
http://www.bugherd.com/
Chris also presented commerce kickstart to those who stuck around late:
http://drupal.org/project/commerce_kickstart
Would love to hear people's thoughts on the meet-up - including venue etc and also would love for people to come forward with discussion/presentation ideas. Based on the past two meet-ups we have a few people keen to talk, but would be great to cement some in.
Next meet-up will be 11th of September! Look forward to seeing everyone again then.
Cheers,
Daniel
Just to throw something out there to get people's thoughts
It's great to see the Tuesday night meetings getting a good turn up. I'm always frustrated that for one reason or another ( my wife works some nights - Nurse) I can't make these meetings so I'd like to find out if there is any interests for an additional catchup for the Brisbane Drupal Community.
I'm thinking a Saturday or Sunday morning ( around 10ish / 11ish) catchup every 1 or 2 months. For a venue I had in mind the Chermisde library cafe but I'm not married to that location if there are other suggestions.
Anyway Let's hear what people think and see if this is worth pursuing and what days / times / locations interested people would prefer.
Another crazy idea I had was using google hangouts to allow remote / house bound community members to attend the Tuesday night meetings - What do people think? Is this feasible?
Cheers
James
Yes please!
I think it would allow for remote community members to also attend, but also possibly bring in remote speakers.
Hey James, is there any other
Hey James, is there any other night which works better for you during the week? Sentiment may have changed but I know that weekend meetings in the past were fairly unpopular as people like to keep more free for travel and other leisure.
I think with the Brisbane community still being quite small comparitively to sydney/melbourne it'd be good to try and stick it to the one meet-up to encourage discussion.
Your idea on google hangouts or similar is quite a good one to try and make the meet-up more accessible to people. In our current venue we're running off 3g so I'm not sure it would work, but if we moved to an office/library we would be able to get a solid net connection and make this possible...
Would be good to hear others thoughts on the day of the event and location!
would love the google hang out option
a now and again option for a weekend or another time would also be good - i think making it regular would be too difficult i think - agree with Daniel
Plus 1 for Google Hangouts,
Plus 1 for Google Hangouts, there's quite a few of us in regional QLD who'd love to have access to local (at least on a state level) meetups.
Good to meet
Hey guys,
just wanted to say Kristina and I enjoyed meeting all of you last night. Our first ever Drupal meet up and it was good :)
P.S. Vladimir do you have any more info on that Acquia thing in September 'cose i'd definitely like to attend that one?

We have had successful
We have had successful Saturday meetups in the past. Might be good to have it as a half day code hack or something along those lines.
Sean Bannister has been keen to have a Saturday meetup for a while. Being up the coast it's hard for him to make week nights. Possibly Google Hangout would be good for him as well.
I'm always happy to have a chat and a coffee somewhere, so if you want to make it an informal gathering, that's fine.
Great August meeting last night
Thanks guys... Was very interesting meeting last night!
Unfortunately, I'm away until 17 Sep so will miss next meeting or Global Drupal Training Day (14 Sept).
I'm not a big fan of weekend meetings, whereas hangout is great idea. There should be few cafes with Wifi access around.
I'm still keen to know what people are interested in terms of presentations. Few topics I covered recently in my work and research were:
- Single file Drupal installer. Create Drupal installations on shared hosting with no access to drush or Aegir (http://www.aegirproject.org/) that Chris covered last night.
- Sandboxing your client. Giving the client tools & help they need without full Drupal backend access or full Drupal training.
- Drupal theming, mobile and responsive design with Omega theme.
- Drupal Gardens.
Each talk is about 30 mins long. Let me know if you need more details on any of the talks.
Regarding Drupal training. I'm gonna contact Drupal Association and Acquia this week and see what are they proposing regarding Drupal in a Day or more advanced development training.
At my last work I developed 3 days hands-on course for developers & designers to deliver real website from PSD document to complete working solution. Acquia's focus is more on Drupal features & possibilities although I'm yet to get the answer from them. I might run a quick survey early September to see if there is any demand locally.
One last thing: Adobe is doing HTML focus tour in Sep-Oct around the world. They gonna hit Sydney on 11-Oct. Details here: http://html.adobe.com/events/
Hope to see you soon, Vladimir.
Next Brisbane meet-up -- Tues 11th Sept
So time yet to post the next meet-up?? 7pm, Tues, 11th Sept 2012
John Zornig offered to do a presentation:-
"Basic Learning Tools Integration: Drupal as a Tool Provider for Blackboard Learn"
I felt it was good at the August meeting to have the second presentation from Chris. If no other takers then perhaps some reflections on Munich...
Next brisbane meet would really bieng for since last few weeks
we were waiting for this next brisbane meet and it would really going to be awesom, hope so...Daily News Online
